Emerging WiFi Direct technique in home area networks for Smart Grid: Power consumption and outage performance

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Considering the power saving potential of the emerging WiFi Direct technique, we evaluate the performance of WiFi Direct technique in Home Area Networks (HANs) for Smart Grid communication from two aspects: power consumption and downlink outage performance. By modeling the traffic intensity and the number of working devices in a dynamic HAN as a Markov chain, the power consumption of the dynamic HAN with Power Saving Mechanism (PSM) and the conventional static HAN with Continuous Active Mode (CAM) are evaluated and compared. On the other hand, the probability density function (PDF) of the signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) for the active user connected in the HAN is derived from the amplitude distribution property of the classical indoor SalehValenzuela (SV) channel. The numerical results show that WiFi Direct technique not only improves the power saving in the HAN for Smart Grid, but also enhances the reliability of HAN communications for Smart Grid.

Home Network Technologies and Automating Demand Response

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Over the past several years, interest in large-scale control of peak energy demand and total consumption has increased. While motivated by a number of factors, this interest has primarily been spurred on the demand side by the increasing cost of energy and, on the supply side by the limited ability of utilities to build sufficient electricity generation capacity to meet unrestrained future demand. To address peak electricity use Demand Response (DR) systems are being proposed to motivate reductions in electricity use through the use of price incentives. DR systems are also be design to shift or curtail energy demand at critical times when the generation, transmission, and distribution systems (i.e. the 'grid') are threatened with instabilities. To be effectively deployed on a large-scale, these proposed DR systems need to be automated. Automation will require robust and efficient data communications infrastructures across geographically dispersed markets. The present availability of widespread Internet connectivity and inexpensive, reliable computing hardware combined with the growing confidence in the capabilities of distributed, application-level communications protocols suggests that now is the time for designing and deploying practical systems. Centralized computer systems that are capable of providing continuous signals to automate customers reduction of power demand, are known as Demand Response Automation Servers (DRAS). The deployment of prototype DRAS systems has already begun - with most initial deployments targeting large commercial and industrial (C & I) customers. An examination of the current overall energy consumption by economic sector shows that the C & I market is responsible for roughly half of all energy consumption in the US. On a per customer basis, large C & I customers clearly have the most to offer - and to gain - by participating in DR programs to reduce peak demand. And, by concentrating on a small number of relatively sophisticated energy consumers, it has been possible to improve the DR 'state of the art' with a manageable commitment of technical resources on both the utility and consumer side. Although numerous C & I DR applications of a DRAS infrastructure are still in either prototype or early production phases, these early attempts at automating DR have been notably successful for both utilities and C & I customers. Several factors have strongly contributed to this success and will be discussed below. These successes have motivated utilities and regulators to look closely at how DR programs can be expanded to encompass the remaining (roughly) half of the state's energy load - the light commercial and, in numerical terms, the more important residential customer market. This survey examines technical issues facing the implementation of automated DR in the residential environment. In particular, we will look at the potential role of home automation networks in implementing wide-scale DR systems that communicate directly to individual residences.

Smart Home Design for Disabled People based on Neural Networks

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Toward facilitating the everyday life of disabled people researches have put together technologies such as computing, networking and telecommunication in one environment called a Smart Home. Enabling disabled people to overcome their handicap by providing a system that replaces what they lack is what makes such a work interesting and important. We have developed such a space by stepping ahead of past researches and not only reaching a preprogrammed automatic home, but also a learning and self-adapting intelligent home. This was accomplished by integrating two types of neural networks to our system. To show the effectiveness of the system, we developed a first prototype that covers parts of the theoretical design. Further work can be done by actually transforming our prototype to an actual house where disabled people may benefit from.

Design of a Prototype Neural Network for Smart Homes and Energy Efficiency

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract As a part of smart homes, a subsystem consisting of three components including a neural network is designed to provide personalized services. Unique factor combinations of building specifics, user profiles and external influences lead to the necessity of self-adaptive systems for personal comfort. The system supports room temperature control in order to heat rooms energy- efficiently at a set time. Smart home systems require a software architecture that allows services to be deployed on virtual and hardware devices. The design of automated processes is the first step of later programming and implementation into smart home systems that will automatically supervise and re-train its components and will also allow live feedback.

Solar Home Systems Performance in Rural Area in Aceh Case Study: Deah Mamplam Village, Aceh Besar

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Evaluations of implemented Solar Home Systems (SHSs) almost never been carried out in Aceh. Most of SHS projects have been claimed to be failed despite there are no data explaining the failure. A study was performed to identify condition and performance of \\{SHSspost\\} installation in Deah Mamplam village, Aceh. After 6 years installation almost three-fourths of the systems are in good physical and operational condition although most are in temporary inoperative. The research demonstrated that the absence of program dissemination and user training prior to delivery and installation has contributed to the low awareness and knowledge of the system.

Neural network and area method interpretation of pulsed experiments

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The determination of the subcriticality level is an important issue in accelerator-driven system technology. The area method, originally introduced by N. G. Sjoestrand, is a classical technique to interpret flux measurement for pulsed experiments in order to reconstruct the reactivity value. In recent times other methods have also been developed, to account for spatial and spectral effects, which were not included in the area method, since it is based on the point kinetic model. The artificial neural network approach can be an efficient technique to infer reactivities from pulsed experiments. In the present work, some comparisons between the two methods are carried out and discussed. (authors)

Measurement of indoor-outdoor carbonyls at four residential homes in Mexico City metropolitan area

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, propionaldehyde and butyraldehyde were measured in indoor and outdoor air at three houses and one apartment in the Mexico city metropolitan area (MCMA). Formaldehyde presented the highest concentration in indoor and outdoor air, followed by acetone and acetaldehyde. Indoor carbonyl concentrations were higher than outdoor concentrations at all sampling sites. Indoor exposure factors were estimated for formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, ranging from 202 µg day??1 to 554 µg day??1 for formaldehyde and from 82 µg day??1 to 202 µg day??1 for acetaldehyde. Indoor-outdoor correlations were significant at all sites. However, these correlations were the highest in the Miguel Hidalgo house, which was naturally well ventilated, and where very few activities like cooking, were done. Concerning the Tlalnepantla house, although it was also well ventilated, the correlations were not as high as those observed at the Miguel Hidalgo house, possibly because its inhabitants cook a lot more and throughout the whole day.

Wide area network monitoring system for HEP experiments at Fermilab

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Large, distributed High Energy Physics (HEP) collaborations, such as D0, CDF and US-CMS, depend on stable and robust network paths between major world research centers. The evolving emphasis on data and compute Grids increases the reliance on network performance. Fermilab's experimental groups and network support personnel identified a critical need for WAN monitoring to ensure the quality and efficient utilization of such network paths. This has led to the development of the Network Monitoring system we will present in this paper. The system evolved from the IEPM-BW project, started at SLAC three years ago. At Fermilab this system has developed into a fully functional infrastructure with bi-directional active network probes and path characterizations. It is based on the Iperf achievable throughput tool, Ping and Synack to test ICMP/TCP connectivity. It uses Pipechar and Traceroute to test, compare and report hop-by-hop network path characterization. It also measures real file transfer performance by BBFTP and GridFTP. The Monitoring system has an extensive web-interface and all the data is available through standalone SOAP web services or by a MonaLISA client. Also in this paper we will present a case study of network path asymmetry and abnormal performance between FNAL and SDSC, which was discovered and resolved by utilizing the Network Monitoring system.

Cellular telephone-based wide-area radiation detection network

DOE Patents [OSTI]

A network of radiation detection instruments, each having a small solid state radiation sensor module integrated into a cellular phone for providing radiation detection data and analysis directly to a user. The sensor module includes a solid-state crystal bonded to an ASIC readout providing a low cost, low power, light weight compact instrument to detect and measure radiation energies in the local ambient radiation field. In particular, the photon energy, time of event, and location of the detection instrument at the time of detection is recorded for real time transmission to a central data collection/analysis system. The collected data from the entire network of radiation detection instruments are combined by intelligent correlation/analysis algorithms which map the background radiation and detect, identify and track radiation anomalies in the region.

An evaluation of Access Tier local area network switches.

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

This reports tabulates the Test and Evaluation results of the Access Class Switch tests conducted by members of Department 9336. About 15 switches were reviewed for use in the enterprise network as access tier switches as defined in a three tier architecture. The Access Switch Tier has several functions including: aggregate customer desktop ports, preserve and apply QoS tags, provide switched LAN access, provide VLAN assignment, as well as others. The typical switch size is 48 or less user ports. The evaluation team reviewed network switch evaluation reports from the Tolly Group as well as other sources. We then used these reports as a starting point to identify particular switches for evaluation. In general we reviewed the products of dominant equipment manufacturers. Also, based on architectural design requirements, the majority of the switches tested were of relatively small monolithic unit variety.

Deployment of the National Transparent Optical Network around the San Francisco Bay Area

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

We report on the deployment and initial operation of the National Transparent Optical Network, an experimental WDM network testbed around the San Francisco Bay Area, during the Optical Fiber Conference (OFC`96) held in San Jose, CA. The deployment aspects of the physical plant, optical and SONET layers are examined along with a discussion of broadband applications which utilized the network during the OFC`96 demonstration. The network features dense WDM technology, transparent optical routing technology using acousto- optic tunable filter based switches, and network modules with add/drop, multicast, and wavelength translation capabilities. The physical layer consisted of over 300 km of Sprint and Pacific Bell conventional single mode fiber which was amplified with I I optical amplifiers deployed in pre-amp, post-amp, and line amp configurations. An out-of-band control network provided datacom channels from remote equipment sites to the SONET network manager deployed at the San Jose Convention Center for the conference. Data transport over five wavelengths was achieved in the 1550 nm window using a variety of signal formats including analog and digital signal transmission on different wavelengths on the same fiber. The network operated throughout the week of OFC`96 and is still in operation today.

Assessing the integrity of local area network materials accountability systems against insider threats

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

DOE facilities rely increasingly on computerized systems to manage nuclear materials accountability data and to protect against diversion of nuclear materials or other malevolent acts (e.g., hoax due to falsified data) by insider threats. Aspects of modern computerized material accountability (MA) systems including powerful personal computers and applications on networks, mixed security environments, and more users with increased knowledge, skills and abilities help heighten the concern about insider threats to the integrity of the system. In this paper, we describe a methodology for assessing MA applications to help decision makers identify ways of and compare options for preventing or mitigating possible additional risks from the insider threat. We illustrate insights from applying the methodology to local area network materials accountability systems.

They DO NOT replace DCAA or other audits requested by DOE to look at indirect rates or incurred costs or closeouts. DCAA would never agree to perform A-133 or our 316 audits. They don't do A-133 audits for DOD awardees. The purpose of the audits are different, look at different things and in the few instances of overlap, from different perspectives. 316

Snails home

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Many gardeners and horticulturalists seek non-chemical methods to control populations of snails. It has frequently been reported that snails that are marked and removed from a garden are later found in the garden again. This phenomenon is often cited as evidence for a homing instinct. We report a systematic study of the snail population in a small suburban garden, in which large numbers of snails were marked and removed over a period of about 6 months. While many returned, inferring a homing instinct from this evidence requires statistical modelling. Monte Carlo techniques demonstrate that movements of snails are better explained by drift under the influence of a homing instinct than by random diffusion. Maximum likelihood techniques infer the existence of two groups of snails in the garden: members of a larger population that show little affinity to the garden itself, and core members of a local garden population that regularly return to their home if removed. The data are strongly suggestive of a homing instinct, but also reveal that snail-throwing can work as a pest management strategy.

Environmental policy implications of working from home: Modelling the impacts of land-use, infrastructure and socio-demographics

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Working from home is generally perceived as an effective means of reducing energy use and associated pollution from commuter transport. In order to consider the merits of mechanisms and policies to support a change in behaviour that results in greater take-up of home working, this paper applies energy consumption per commute calculations and a logit model using a case study of Ireland. In marked contrast with larger countries, the energy consumption per commute is relatively low in Ireland. Nonetheless, the analysis indicates that, on average, at least an average net saving of 9.33kWh per day can be achieved where an individual converts to working from home, after deducting the home energy consumption associated with home working. We find that land use patterns, public transport networks, internet infrastructure, commute distances and socio-demographic characteristics can serve to influence rates of home working. Encouraging the higher and lower professional categories and those in the service sectors to work from home should be the highest priority in terms of energy and emissions reductions. Increased coverage of internet services and railway coverage will support higher rates of home working. Increased dispersion of residential, commercial and industrial areas serves to encourage greater home working.

Building America Efficient Solutions for New Homes Case Study: Tommy Williams Homes Initial Performance of Two Zero Energy Homes, Gainesville, Florida

Broader source: Energy.gov (indexed) [DOE]

Description Description These high-performance homes in northern Florida are two that have achieved Home Energy Rating System (HERS) ratings of less than zero since Building America (BA) builders started building them in 2010. The homes (TW1 and TW2) were built in the Gainesville area by Tommy Williams Homes (TW), with technical assistance from Florida H.E.R.O. and energy-efficient home design input provided by Energy Smart Home Plans. The homes are being metered by the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) as part of BA efforts to collect data that characterize the performance of the homes and verify that the solar photovoltaic (PV) system used in their design produces more energy than these all-electric homes require, as the HERS rating of <0 implies.

Smart homes: technologies, applications and challenges

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Smart homes are intelligent environments that interact with their occupants in ways that improve their lives. This paper presents the ubiquitous pervasive technologies that will need to be integrated to realise the future vision of smart homes that have the intelligence to anticipate, predict and take decisions in a virtually autonomous manner. It also presents some of the major application areas that will benefit from the realisation of smart homes. It then discusses some of the challenges that need to be overcome in order for smart homes to become a reality and find acceptance from people across all sectors of the society.

Sandia`s network for SC `97: Supporting visualization, distributed cluster computing, and production data networking with a wide area high performance parallel asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The advanced networking department at Sandia National Laboratories has used the annual Supercomputing conference sponsored by the IEEE and ACM for the past several years as a forum to demonstrate and focus communication and networking developments. At SC `97, Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) combined their SC `97 activities within a single research booth under the Advance Strategic Computing Initiative (ASCI) banner. For the second year in a row, Sandia provided the network design and coordinated the networking activities within the booth. At SC `97, Sandia elected to demonstrate the capability of the Computation Plant, the visualization of scientific data, scalable ATM encryption, and ATM video and telephony capabilities. At SC `97, LLNL demonstrated an application, called RIPTIDE, that also required significant networking resources. The RIPTIDE application had computational visualization and steering capabilities. This paper documents those accomplishments, discusses the details of their implementation, and describes how these demonstrations support Sandia`s overall strategies in ATM networking.

Cellular telephone-based radiation sensor and wide-area detection network

Extended Virtual Spring Mesh (EVSM): The Distributed Self-Organizing Mobile Ad Hoc Network for Area Exploration

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs) are distributed self-organizing networks that can change locations and configure themselves on the fly. This paper focuses on an algorithmic approach for the deployment of a MANET within an enclosed area, such as a building in a disaster scenario, which can provide a robust communication infrastructure for search and rescue operations. While a virtual spring mesh (VSM) algorithm provides scalable, self-organizing, and fault-tolerant capabilities required by aMANET, the VSM lacks the MANET's capabilities of deployment mechanisms for blanket coverage of an area and does not provide an obstacle avoidance mechanism. This paper presents a new technique, an extended VSM (EVSM) algorithm that provides the following novelties: (1) new control laws for exploration and expansion to provide blanket coverage, (2) virtual adaptive springs enabling the mesh to expand as necessary, (3) adapts to communications disturbances by varying the density and movement of mobile nodes, and (4) new metrics to assess the performance of the EVSM algorithm. Simulation results show that EVSM provides up to 16% more coverage and is 3.5 times faster than VSM in environments with eight obstacles.

Home Energy Assessments

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

A home energy assessment, also known as a home energy audit, is the first step to assess how much energy your home consumes and to evaluate what measures you can take to make your home more energy efficient. An assessment will show you problems that may, when corrected, save you significant amounts of money over time. This video shows some of the ways that a contractor may test your home during an assessment, and helps you understand how an assessment can help you move toward energy savings. Groundwater model recalibration and remediation well network design at the F-Area Seepage Basins

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

On September 30, 1992, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) issued a Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Hazardous Waste Part B Permit prescribing remediation of contaminated groundwater beneath and downgradient of the F- and H-Area Seepage Basins at the Savannah River Site. The remediation outlined in the Part B Permit calls for a three phase approach. For the F-Area Seepage Basins, the first phase requires the ``installation of an adequate number of pumping and injection wells or trenches, as appropriate, to capture and remediate those portions of-the contaminant plume delineated by the 10,000 pCi/ml tritium isoconcentration contour.`` Geochemical results from 1992 groundwater monitoring were used to delineate this isoconcentration contour in the Corrective Action Program (CAP) (WSRC, 1992a). The 1992 results were used based on SCDHEC written requirement to use the most recent data available at the time the CAP was formulated. The rationale used by SCDHEC in selecting the 10,000 pCi/ml tritium isoconcentration contour was that it also encompassed most of the other contaminants listed in the Groundwater Protection Standards. After extraction and treatment, the water is required to be reinjected into the aquifer due to the high levels of tritium still present in the treated water. The conceptual plan is to have recirculation of the tritium (as much as can practically be accomplished) to allow more time for radioactive decay before natural discharge to surface water.

Low Energy Wireless Body-Area Networks for Fetal ECG Telemonitoring via the Framework of Block Sparse Bayesian Learning

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Fetal ECG (FECG) telemonitoring is an important branch in telemedicine. The design of a telemonitoring system via a low-power wireless body-area network for ambulatory use is highly desirable. As an emerging technique, compressed sensing (CS) shows great promise in compressing data with low power consumption. However, due to some specific characteristics of FECG recordings such as non-sparsity and strong noise contamination, current CS algorithms generally fail in this application. In this work we utilize the block sparse Bayesian learning (bSBL) framework, a recently developed framework solving the CS problems. To illustrate the ability of the bSBL methods, we apply it to two representative FECG datasets. In one dataset the fetal heartbeat signals are visible, while in the other dataset are barely visible. The experiment results show that the bSBL framework is capable of compressing FECG raw recordings and successfully reconstructing them. These successes rely on two unique features of the bSBL framework; on...

Homing Instinct Homing Instinct Nature Bulletin No. 515-A February 2, 1974 Forest Preserve District of Cook County George W. Dunne, President Roland F. Eisenbeis, Supt. of Conservation THE HOMING INSTINCT We share with our dogs, cats and other domestic animals an attachment to a place we both regard as home. If one of these animals strays, or is sold to a new owner, or is carried away and abandoned, it acts lost and homesick as it struggles to grope its way back. This is easy to see in pets and among livestock on farms. Surprisingly, many such displaced animals do find their way home, often through miles of strange country. Less commonly known is the remarkable ability of a wide variety of wild creatures to navigate unknown territory with pinpoint accuracy -- birds, bats, mice, turtles, fish, insects, and many others.

Saver(tm) (HES) empowers homeowners and renters to save Saver(tm) (HES) empowers homeowners and renters to save money, live better, and help the earth by reducing energy use in their homes. HES recommends energy-saving upgrades that are appropriate to the home and make sense for the home's climate and local energy prices. The money invested in these upgrades commonly earns "interest" in the form of energy bill savings, at an annual rate of 20% or more (see examples). HES also estimates the home's carbon footprint and shows how much it can be reduced. For professional users, we also offer HESpro and teachers and students can check out Energized Learning. The upgrades recommended by HES offer other benefits as well. Depending on the type of improvement made, the home can achieve better comfort (warmer

Seasons of Life Seasons of Life Changes in life mean changes in energy use, and opportunities to use that energy more efficiently. Looking for a rental: Just because you don't own a home doesn't mean you can't expect it to be efficient. Ask your prospective landlord what the energy costs are, and find out which forms of energy you pay for. Ask if any energy-efficiency upgrades are planned. A "free" appliance provided by your landlord may not be such a good deal if energy use is high. Use the appliances wisely: Manage your thermostat well Pay attention to dishwasher, clothes washer, and water heater settings.Meanwhile, lights, computers, televisions, and other devices you own and bring into the home are important energy users - shop wisely when you buy them. Home purchase: For most of us, buying a home is our greatest investment,

Choosing a Good Contractor Choosing a Good Contractor If your project goes much beyond replacing lights and a few appliances, you would probably benefit from using a home performance contractor. The book No-Regrets Remodeling provides a good definition if this emerging specialty: Because the whole-house, or systems, approach to homes is a fairly new concept, not everyone in the building trades is familiar with it. And it goes against traditional building practice, which is based on specialty trades. You probably already know how that goes: a different contractor for every task. And none of them has any idea what the other is doing. This is changing with the emergence of the home performance contractor, a person trained and equipped to test homes to see where problems exist. These

The effectiveness of radon preventive and remedial measures in Irish homes

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

It is estimated that approximately 100?000 Irish homes have radon concentrations above the reference level of 200Bqm?3. To minimise the number of new homes with this problem, building regulations require that all new homes built since July 1998 in high radon areas are installed with radon barriers during construction. Measurements on local authority homes in a number of high radon areas have allowed the impact of these new regulations to be assessed. In County Cork a reduction of up to 70% in the mean radon concentration was observed in homes built since 1998 relative to those built before this date. A reduction in both the number of homes exceeding the reference level and the maximum concentration measured in homes was also measured. Homes exceeding the reference level were remediated with the use of an active sump. The results of this remedial work are also presented and show that the mean reduction in radon concentration achieved was 92%.

Home Energy Saver for Consumers Home Energy Saver for Consumers The Home Energy Saver(tm) (HES) empowers homeowners and renters to save money, live better, and help the earth by reducing energy use in their homes. HES recommends energy-saving upgrades that are appropriate to the home and make sense for the home's climate and local energy prices. The money invested in these upgrades commonly earns "interest" in the form of energy bill savings, at an annual rate of 20% or more. Depending on the type of improvement made, the home can achieve better comfort (warmer in winter, cooler in summer), fewer drafts, lower maintenance costs, and improved security and fire safety-all of which improve life and increase the home's value. HES computes a home's energy use on-line in a matter of seconds based on

Clean Power at Home

E-Print Network [OSTI]

this report is to describe and analyze net metering as a mechanism to support the deployment of small-scale, distributed electricity technologies in British Columbia based on renewable energy sources. These are referred to as "distributed renewables" throughout the report. The deployment of distributed renewables offers several environmental, economic, and social benefits that are described in this paper. Net metering enables individual utility customers to connect on-site generation to the utility grid, feeding excess power back to the grid when it is not needed, and utilizing grid power when consumption exceeds local renewable energy supply. In most programs, a single meter measures the customer's net consumption of grid power in a billing period, and they are charged for that consumption under regular retail rates. If production exceeds consumption, the customer's bill is essentially zero. In some instances, utilities may refund customers for excess production in a billing period based on wholesale market prices or avoided production costs. Net metering programs can make self-generation more attractive for customers by eliminating the need to size systems to meet customers' exact power needs or install on-site storage and power conditioning devices. Utilities may, depending upon the type of systems installed, benefit from improvements in local area load factors, and receive credit for various social or environmental benefits of such resources (e.g., greenhouse gas reductions). However, utilities have raised concerns about worker safety (e.g., the possibility that net metering sites may continue to feed electricity into the local distribution grid when the rest of the network is down, putting line workers at risk) and possible financial cross-subsidies from other rate...
