Biodiversity of Harmful Marine Algae

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are characterized by proliferation of algae, causing harmful effects to aquatic ecosystems or to human health. High taxonomic diversity and multiple phylogenetic origins complicate identification of common ecological and evolutionary strategies and thus predictions on global change consequences. Variation estimates revealed unexpectedly high genetic heterogeneity among HAB populations. Molecular fingerprinting of gene frequency and expression patterns can identify species invasions and global distributional shifts. Variation within populations must also be evaluated over seasonal and annual time scales. Such studies are essential to define and understand processes regulating HAB biodiversity and explain the linkages to ecosystem functionality.

Pursuing Energy Efficiency as a Hedge Against Carbon Regulatory Risks Pursuing Energy Efficiency as a Hedge Against Carbon Regulatory Risks Current Resource Planning Practices in the West Title Pursuing Energy Efficiency as a Hedge Against Carbon Regulatory Risks Current Resource Planning Practices in the West Publication Type Report Year of Publication 2008 Authors Barbose, Galen L., Ryan H. Wiser, Amol Phadke, and Charles A. Goldman Pagination 12 Date Published 08/2008 Publisher LBNL City Berkeley Keywords electric utilities, electricity markets and policy group, energy analysis and environmental impacts department, energy efficiency, power system planning Abstract Uncertainty surrounding the nature and timing of future carbon regulations poses a fundamental and far-reaching financial risk for electric utilities and their ratepayers. Long-term resource planning provides a potential framework within which utilities can assess carbon regulatory risk and evaluate options for mitigating exposure to this risk through investments in energy efficiency and other low-carbon resources. In this paper, we examine current resource planning practices related to managing carbon regulatory risk, based on a comparative analysis of the most-recent long-term resource plans filed by fifteen major utilities in the Western U.S. First, we compare the assumptions and methods used by utilities to assess carbon regulatory risk and to evaluate energy efficiency as a risk mitigation option. Although most utilities have made important strides in beginning to address carbon regulatory risk within their resource plan, we also identify a number of opportunities for improvement and offer recommendations for resource planners and state regulators to consider. We also summarize the composition and carbon intensity of the preferred resource portfolios selected by the fifteen Western utilities, highlighting the contribution of energy efficiency and its impact on the carbon intensity of utilities' proposed resource strategies. Energy efficiency and renewables are the dominant low-carbon resources included in utilities' preferred portfolios. Across the fifteen utilities, energy efficiency constitutes anywhere from 6% to almost 50% of the preferred portfolio energy resources, and represents 22% of all incremental resources in aggregate.

Niche of harmful alga Aureococcus anophagefferens revealed through ecogenomics

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) cause significant economic and ecological damage worldwide. Despite considerable efforts, a comprehensive understanding of the factors that promote these blooms has been lacking because the biochemical pathways that facilitate their dominance relative to other phytoplankton within specific environments have not been identified. Here, biogeochemical measurements demonstrated that the harmful alga Aureococcus anophagefferens outcompeted co-occurring phytoplankton in estuaries with elevated levels of dissolved organic matter and turbidity and low levels of dissolved inorganic nitrogen. We subsequently sequenced the first HAB genome (A. anophagefferens) and compared its gene complement to those of six competing phytoplankton species identified via metaproteomics. Using an ecogenomic approach, we specifically focused on the gene sets that may facilitate dominance within the environmental conditions present during blooms. A. anophagefferens possesses a larger genome (56 mbp) and more genes involved in light harvesting, organic carbon and nitrogen utilization, and encoding selenium- and metal-requiring enzymes than competing phytoplankton. Genes for the synthesis of microbial deterrents likely permit the proliferation of this species with reduced mortality losses during blooms. Collectively, these findings suggest that anthropogenic activities resulting in elevated levels of turbidity, organic matter, and metals have opened a niche within coastal ecosystems that ideally suits the unique genetic capacity of A. anophagefferens and thus has facilitated the proliferation of this and potentially other HABs.

10, 2007 10, 2007 Colorado Company Pursues Low-Cost, Low-Impact Technology to Develop Nation's Oil Shale Resources DOE-Funded Research Targets America's Largest Potential Source of Oil WASHINGTON, DC - A U.S. Department of Energy-funded project has successfully demonstrated the viability of a new technology that could prove to be the key to unlocking America's largest potential source of oil. If ongoing research continues to confirm the technology's effectiveness, its application offers the potential to dramatically reduce costs and environmental impacts in the extraction of oil from oil shale. America holds more than three-fourths of the world's estimated 2.6 trillion barrels of oil-in-place of oil shale resources. As much as 1.1 trillion barrels of oil equivalent is believed to be recoverable in the richest single deposit - the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. That volume is almost 50 percent greater than the combined proved reserves of conventional oil in the entire Middle East.

The survey called also for listing the three main factors (out of a list of 11) motivating their choice. Results Students originated from 39 medical schools. Of the 2588 students, 1427 (55%) were women. The response rate to the questionnaire was 1742/2588=67%. Two hundred and twenty students (13%) did not express any specific professional orientation. Of the 1522 responses obtained, 522 students wanted to become surgeons. Gender was a determining factor as 44% of male students (n=252) versus 29% of female students wanted to become a surgeon; P<0.0001. The three most selected surgical subspecialties were gynecology (n=137), orthopedics (n=91) and ophthalmology (n=57). Once again gender played a role in the choice: 82% who chose gynecology were women while 73% of future urologists were men (P<0.0001). Special interest in specific diseases (n=356, 23%), the possibility of private practice (n=280, 18%) and life style (n=175, 11%) were the motivations most often cited to back their choice. Conclusion One third of medical students want to become surgeons. Feminization, life style and income are the principal factors influencing the choice of the type of surgical subspecialization.

Using advertising and price to mitigate losses in a product-harm crisis

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Product-harm crises are common in today's marketplace and are expected to occur with escalating frequency as products become increasingly complex, product-safety legislation evolves, and always-demanding customers continue to press for more. A product-harm crisis may cause major revenue losses, lead to costly recalls, and destroy carefully nurtured brand equity. Moreover, the crisis may not only be devastating for the affected brand, but also influence the entire category when other brands are perceived as guilty by association. Despite these enormous stakes, marketing managers are often unprepared to react appropriately to product-harm crises. Managers frequently increase advertising support or decrease price in the wake of a product-harm crisis in an attempt to regain lost consumers. Competitors in the same category may also boost advertising expenditures or lower their prices to benefit from the misfortune of the affected brand(s). This article provides insights regarding the effectiveness of these strategies in the wake of a product-harm crisis. The extant literature has shown that the effectiveness of these strategies depends largely on the role of the brand in the crisisaffected or notand the characteristics of the crisis.

2013 R&D 100 Award: 'SHIELD' protects NIF optics from harmful pulses

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

In the past, it took as long as 12 hours to manually screen 48 critical checkpoints at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) for harmful laser pulses. The screening equipment had to be moved from point to point throughout a facility the size of three football fields. Now with a new technology, called Laser SHIELD (Screening at High-throughput to Identify Energetic Laser Distortion), and with the push of a button, the screening can be done in less than one second. Proper screening of pulses is critical for the operation of high-energy lasers to ensure that the laser does not exceed safe operating conditions for optics. The energetic beams of light are so powerful that, when left uncontrolled, they can shatter the extremely valuable glass inside the laser. If a harmful pulse is found, immediate adjustments can be made in order to protect the optics for the facility. Laser SHIELD is a custom-designed high-throughput screening system built from low-cost and commercially available components found in the telecommunications industry. Its all-fiber design makes it amenable to the unique needs of high-energy laser facilities, including routing to intricate pick-off locations, immunity to electromagnetic interference and low-loss transport (up to several kilometers). The technology offers several important benefits for NIF. First, the facility is able to fire more shots in less time-an efficiency that saves the facility millions of dollars each year. Second, high-energy lasers are more flexible to wavelength changes requested by target physicists. Third, by identifying harmful pulses before they damage the laser's optics, the facility potentially saves hundreds of thousands of dollars in maintenance costs each year.

Union Carbide pursuing direct conversion of methane to ethylene

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Union Carbide has begun developing an alternative source for ethylene. If a new program is successful, Carbide will be able to supplement present sources of ethylene by direct catalytic conversion of methane. The program also will provide an alternative means for possible future production of distillate motor fuels. Most ethylene consumed today is derived from dehydrogenation of ethane or propane. These sources are becoming increasingly tight, and alternatives are being sought by most polyethylene producers. Alternative sources have been on Carbide's research agenda at least since 1969, when the possibilities of converting methane were first examined. Following the Arab oil embargo of 1974 and the subsequent crude oil and natural gas price rises, most attention turned to coal conversion, at least in the U.S. However, inherent difficulties diminished the immediate prospects for utilizing coal as a source of fuels and petrochemical feedstocks.

Remaining Life Related Issues Being Pursued at DRDO for Indian Air Force

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Hot section components of an aircraft gas turbine engine are critical to the performance and safety during the operation of military aircraft, where the service spectra are highly random and relatively severe in terms of the loading rates. DMRL, in collaboration with Indian Air Force (IAF), has initiated a project for the estimation of remaining life as well as life extension of military aeroengines of various origins. This is based on extensive laboratory specimen-level material characterization in terms of fatigue and creep, followed by the scale-up of experimental results to actual component. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is an indispensable engineering tool for evaluation of the mechanical variables that determine crack initiation and growth, apart from material degradation prior to physical failure. DMRL's understanding and experience with FEA applications and damage mechanics concepts in these areas are briefly discussed in this paper.

Pursuing Energy Efficiency as a Hedge against Carbon Regulatory Risks: Current Resource Planning Practices in the West

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Uncertainty surrounding the nature and timing of future carbon regulations poses a fundamental and far-reaching financial risk for electric utilities and their ratepayers. Across the fifteen utilities, energy efficiency constitutes anywhere from 6percent to almost 50percent of the preferred portfolio energy resources, and represents 22percent of all incremental resources in aggregate.

Harmful routines? Uncertainty in science and conflicting views on routine petroleum operations in Norway

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Offshore petroleum activities are the focus of highly politicised debates globally. Typically, public debate is sparked by catastrophic events, such as the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and decision-making processes fuelled by the assessment of worst-case scenarios. However, everyday routine petroleum operations also impact the marine ecosystems and adjoining socio-economic sectors, but the extent and severity of the impacts are uncertain. This paper takes as its point of departure routine operations and their surrounding uncertainties. Particularly, it focuses on the debates of whether to extend routine petroleum operations in vulnerable and valuable parts of Norway, such as the Lofoten area and the Sula Ridge. These conflicts draw on important and for some, epistemological uncertainties that surround the impacts of routine operations. The paper argues that it is necessary to first highlight these uncertainties, rather than marginalise them, and second, recognise that uncertainties are not simply a scientific challenge, but can be a powerful political tool. This paper unpacks and explores uncertainties associated with three phases of routine operations, that are used to steer political actions: (i) the impacts of seismic surveys on fish and marine mammals; (ii) the impacts of drilling mud and drill cuttings on benthic communities such as deep-sea coral reefs; and (iii) the impacts of produced water on the marine environment. The paper discusses the importance of transparency in addressing these uncertainties, and emphasises the need to implement the precautionary principle in a more participatory way. It thus proposes participatory exercises in order to allow the recognition of the epistemological nature of uncertainties.

Pursuing the origin of electroweak symmetry breaking: a 'Bayesian Physics' argument for sqrt(s) <~; 600 GeV e+e- collider

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

High-energy data has been accumulating over the last ten years, and it should not be ignored when making decisions about the future experimental program. In particular, we argue that the electroweak data collected at LEP, SLC and Tevatron indicate a light scalar particle with mass less than 500 GeV. This result is based on considering a wide variety of theories including the Standard Model, supersymmetry, large extra dimensions, and composite models. We argue that a high luminosity, 600 GeV e{sup +}e{sup -} collider would then be the natural choice to feel confident about finding and studying states connected to electroweak symmetry breaking. We also argue from the data that worrying about resonances at multi-TeV energies as the only signal for electroweak symmetry breaking is not as important a discovery issue for the next generation of colliders. Such concerns should perhaps be replaced with more relevant discovery issues such as a Higgs boson that decays invisibly, and ''new physics'' that could conspire with a heavier Higgs boson to accommodate precision electroweak data. An e{sup +}e{sup -} collider with {radical}s {approx}< 600 GeV is ideally suited to cover these possibilities.

Online Social Networks: Threats and Solutions Survey

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Online social network users are unaware of the numerous security risks that exist in these networks, which can include privacy violations, identity theft, and sexual harassment, just to mention a few. According to recent studies, many online social network users readily expose personal and intimate details about themselves, such as relationship status, date of birth, school name, email, phone number, and even home addresses. This information, if fallen into the wrong hands, can be used to harm users, both in the virtual and in the real world. These risks become more severe when the users are children. In this paper we present a thorough survey on the different security and privacy risks which threaten the well-being of online social network users in general and children in particular. In addition, we present an overview of existing solutions that can provide better protection, security, and privacy for online social network users.

This paper studies the consequences of accidental hydrogen releases from cryo-compressed storage and evaluates the cold effects, thermal effects, and overpressure and missile effects. Two typical storage conditions for a fuel cell car are considered, including driving condition and quasi-venting condition after a long-term of parking. Results show that flash fire and vapor cloud explosion can be considered as the leading consequences. Without ignition, catastrophic rupture may be more dangerous than leakages but with ignition the results may vary for different release diameters. For leakages, quasi-venting condition may be more dangerous than driving condition. However, for catastrophic rupture, the results may be not uniformed but depend on whether and when the hydrogen is ignited. Moreover, the influences of wind velocity and atmospheric pressure are also investigated.

NREL's Energy-Saving Technology for Air Conditioning Cuts Peak Power Loads Without Using Harmful Refrigerants (Fact Sheet)

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

This fact sheet describes how the DEVAP air conditioner was invented, explains how the technology works, and why it won an R&D 100 Award. Desiccant-enhanced evaporative (DEVAP) air-conditioning will provide superior comfort for commercial buildings in any climate at a small fraction of the electricity costs of conventional air-conditioning equipment, releasing far less carbon dioxide and cutting costly peak electrical demand by an estimated 80%. Air conditioning currently consumes about 15% of the electricity generated in the United States and is a major contributor to peak electrical demand on hot summer days, which can lead to escalating power costs, brownouts, and rolling blackouts. DEVAP employs an innovative combination of air-cooling technologies to reduce energy use by up to 81%. DEVAP also shifts most of the energy needs to thermal energy sources, reducing annual electricity use by up to 90%. In doing so, DEVAP is estimated to cut peak electrical demand by nearly 80% in all climates. Widespread use of this cooling cycle would dramatically cut peak electrical loads throughout the country, saving billions of dollars in investments and operating costs for our nation's electrical utilities. Water is already used as a refrigerant in evaporative coolers, a common and widely used energy-saving technology for arid regions. The technology cools incoming hot, dry air by evaporating water into it. The energy absorbed by the water as it evaporates, known as the latent heat of vaporization, cools the air while humidifying it. However, evaporative coolers only function when the air is dry, and they deliver humid air that can lower the comfort level for building occupants. And even many dry climates like Phoenix, Arizona, have a humid season when evaporative cooling won't work well. DEVAP extends the applicability of evaporative cooling by first using a liquid desiccant-a water-absorbing material-to dry the air. The dry air is then passed to an indirect evaporative cooling stage, in which the incoming air is in thermal contact with a moistened surface that evaporates the water into a separate air stream. As the evaporation cools the moistened surface, it draws heat from the incoming air without adding humidity to it. A number of cooling cycles have been developed that employ indirect evaporative cooling, but DEVAP achieves a superior efficiency relative to its technological siblings.

Releases of Contaminants from Oak Ridge Facilities and Risks to Public Health; Final Report of the Oak Ridge Health Agreement Steering Panel

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

In the early 1990s, concern about the Oak Ridge Reservation's past releases of contaminants to the environment prompted Tennessee?s public health officials to pursue an in-depth study of potential off-site health effects at Oak Ridge. This study, the Oak Ridge dose reconstruction, was supported by an agreement between the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the State of Tennessee, and was overseen by a 12-member panel appointed by Tennessee's Commissioner of Health. The following report, "Releases of Contaminants from Oak Ridge Facilities and Risks to Public Health," was written by the Oak Ridge Health Agreement Steering Panel (ORHASP) for the following purposes: (1) to explain the components and process of the lengthy, complex study; (2) to summarize important study results in less technical language; and (3) to provide the State with the Panel's recommendations for future actions concerning the Oak Ridge communities. The dose reconstruction process involved the examination of thousands of historical records to obtain information relating to past operations at each facility. It resulted in hundreds of documents being declassified and provided an avenue for a complete public accounting of past practices and releases. Researchers used this information to identify released contaminants of concern, to estimate the quantity and timing of these releases, to evaluate the routes taken by contaminants through the environment to nearby populations, and to estimate the doses and health risks to exposed groups. The results suggest it is likely that some people's risks of developing various types of cancers or other health effects were increased because of the releases. Two groups were most likely to have been harmed: local children drinking milk, in the early 1950's, from a ?backyard? cow or goat that had grazed on pastures contaminated with iodine-131, and fetuses carried in the 1950's and early 1960's by women who routinely ate fish taken from nearby creeks and rivers contaminated with mercury and PCBs. More detailed dose and risk estimates, and associated uncertainties, are presented in seven technical reports. One way to easily locate them in OSTI's Information Bridge is by searching the "author field" for the name "Widner," since Mr. T.E. Widner was the principal investigator on this project.
