Tip Cal Methods for Ground-Based Microwave Tip Cal Methods for Ground-Based Microwave Radiometric Sensing of Water Vapor and Clouds Y. Han and E. R. Westwater CIRES, University of Colorado National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Environmental Technology Laboratory Boulder, Colorado Introduction Ground-based Microwave Radiometers (MWRs) have been widely used to measure atmospheric water vapor and cloud liquid water. Frequencies on the 22.235-GHz water vapor absorption band and in the 31-GHz absorption window region are commonly used in these systems. These frequency channels differ in their response to water vapor and cloud liquid water and provide brightness temperature measurements from which precipitable water vapor (PWV) and integrated cloud liquid water are derived. Absolute calibration of the radiometer is fundamental in determining the accuracies of these

Release of ammonia from HAN-type PHA

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

A preliminary design basis for ammonia scrubbers in the DWPF has been issued. This design basis is based on a theoretical model of ammonia evolution from the SRAT, SME and RCT. It is desirable to acquire actual process data on ammonia evolution prior to performing detailed design of scrubbers for DWPF. The evolution of ammonia from the SRAT and SME in the Integrated DWPF Melter System (IDMS) was investigated during the HM4 run. In this run, Precipitate Hydrolysis Aqueous (PHA), which was made in the Precipitate Hydrolysis Experimental Facility (PHEF) using the HAN (hydroxylamine nitrate) process was used, thus resulting in PHA with a high concentration of ammonium ion.

Presenter Bio - Tasios Melis, Professor, UC Berkeley Presenter Bio - Tasios Melis, Professor, UC Berkeley A Professor at the University of California Berkeley, Tasios Melis envisioned and pioneered the concept of "Photosynthetic Biofuels", entailing the direct application of photosynthesis for the generation of bioenergy, in a process where a single organism acts both as photocatalyst and processor, synthesizing and secreting ready to use fuels. This has been successfully applied to hydrogen production and specific hydrocarbon products. The Melis lab contributed with a breakthrough in the field, when several years ago they demonstrated, for the first time, how to divert the natural flow of photosynthesis in green microalgae and to sustainably generate hydrogen gas, instead of the normally produced oxygen. This technology is currently employed by

Assistant Professor,

E-Print Network [OSTI]

The Indian Education sector has seen a tremendous rise in the field of higher education which has led to the demand for the automation of education sector at all the levels in order to cater to the need of information of various stakeholders. Due to burst in the field of communication technology every one expects the access of relevant information; in fast, accurate and anytime any where manner. All the educational organizations like college, institutes including statutory bodies like AICTE, DTE etc are already moving individually towards the adoption of IT to bring transparency and control. There is a need to bring and tie all the information system through a common platform without losing the control over their individual IT system. The technological development in the abstraction and encapsulation of the IT resources has been successfully implemented with the help of cloud architecture. This technology not only caters to the various stakeholders; it also ensures the sharing, availability, security and reliability of information involved. It also provides all the benefits of outsourcing the IT maintenance services so as to concentrate only on the information and its presentation. This paper proposes a cloud based system architecture for the applications used in higher education in India that makes information transparent and easily accessible. It also shows how the existing structure of IT in education can be adapted to make the information available between cloud based systems. This paper is organized into four main sections; firstly it gives the analysis of the existing IT system in education and its limitations, secondly it proposes a new architecture for the educational sector. Next it discusses the advantages of the proposed architecture and lastly it concludes the paper followed by the references. 1.

Title, Lockheed Martin Advance Technology Center/Stanford University The Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on the Solar Dynamic Observatory with obtains full disk images that span the temperature range from 6000 to 20,000,000K with arcsecond resolution and a 12 second cadence. Because of the enhanced thermal and temporal coverage and the high dynamic range available with AIA, it has been able to discovery collective behavior associated with energeti solar events that are driven by the expansion of magnetic structures. Nearly half of the M and X class flares seen with AIA have impact over a solar hemisphere and sometimes nearly the entire sphere. The extent of the events are aided by using co-temporal STEREO data.

Postirradiation evaluations of capsules HANS-1 and HANS-2 irradiated in the HFIR target region in support of fuel development for the advanced neutron source

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

This report describes the design, fabrication, irradiation, and evaluation of two capsule tests containing U{sub 3}Si{sub 2} fuel particles in contact with aluminum. The tests were in support of fuel qualification for the Advanced Neutron Source (ANS) reactor, a high-powered research reactor that was planned for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. At the time of these tests, the fuel consisted of U{sub 3}Si{sub 2}, containing highly enriched uranium dispersed in aluminum at a volume fraction of {approximately}0.15. The extremely high thermal flux in the target region of the High Flux Isotope Reactor provided up to 90% burnup in one 23-d cycle. Temperatures up to 450{degrees}C were maintained by gamma heating. Passive SiC temperature monitors were employed. The very small specimen size allowed only microstructural examination of the fuel particles but also allowed many specimens to be tested at a range of temperatures. The determination of fission gas bubble morphology by microstructural examination has been beneficial in developing a fuel performance model that allows prediction of fuel performance under these extreme conditions. The results indicate that performance of the reference fuel would be satisfactory under the ANS conditions. In addition to U{sub 3}Si{sub 2}, particles of U{sub 3}Si, UAl{sub 2}, UAl{sub x}, and U{sub 3}O{sub 8} were tested.
