Development of fast cooling pulsed magnets at the Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center

SciTech Connect

Pulsed magnets with fast cooling channels have been developed at the Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center. Between the inner and outer sections of a coil wound with a continuous length of CuNb wire, G10 rods with cross section 4 mm 5 mm were inserted as spacers around the entire circumference, parallel to the coil axis. The free space between adjacent rods is 6 mm. The liquid nitrogen flows freely in the channels between these rods, and in the direction perpendicular to the rods through grooves provided in the rods. For a typical 60 T pulsed magnetic field with pulse duration of 40 ms, the cooling time between subsequent pulses is reduced from 160 min to 35 min. Subsequently, the same technology was applied to a 50 T magnet with 300 ms pulse duration. The cooling time of this magnet was reduced from 480 min to 65 min.

Assessment of sustainable development: A case study of Wuhan as a pilot city in China

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Building resource-conserving and environmental-friendly society (referred to as two-oriented society, TOS) is an important way proposed by the Chinese government to achieve sustainable development. In this paper, a pilot city of constructing TOS in China-Wuhan is taken as a case to evaluate the performance of TOS from 2005 to 2012. Treating the indicators of TOS as multi-dimensional vectors, this paper proposes a methodological framework by integrating the methods of vector angle and Euclidean distance to measure the angle and distance between the vector of annual status of TOS and the vector of planning target of TOS. Based on this, the paper employs coordination (the angle between the two vectors) and effectiveness (the distance between the two vectors) to describe the performance of TOS and its subsystems, including economic development (ED), social and people's well-being (SW), resource consumption (RC), resource recycling (RR), environmental quality (EQ) and pollution control (PC). Moreover, grey relational analysis approach is used to analyse the core factors influencing TOS construction. Results reveal that the performance of TOS in Wuhan is continually improved in the study period while the performance of its subsystems shows several differences: (1) both coordination and effectiveness of TOS, ED and SW keep on improving, while those of EQ fluctuate; (2) the effectiveness of both RR and PC shows a downward trend while the coordination of them fluctuates; (3) the actual value of RC indicators reaches the planning targets. Based on the analysis of determinants, we suggest that strengthening technological ability and adding investment are extremely important to improve the performance of RC and PC. For the sake of improving RR, it is critical to provide more government public expenditure and encourage financial institutions to provide more loans to stimulate and support the businesses. Moreover, increasing the amount of R&D funding and maintaining steady external economic environment are proved to be effective to improve all subsystems of TOS.

Consumption-based CO2 accounting of China's megacities: The case of Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract China has experienced rapid urbanization in the last three decades, with more than half of the population living in cities since 2012. The extent of urban production and urban lifestyles has become one of the main drivers for China's CO2 emissions. To analyze drivers of CO2 emissions we use a consumption-based accounting approach that allocates all emissions along the production chain to the product and place of final consumption, whereas a production-based approach would allocate all emissions to the place of origin. In this study, we focus on the spatial distribution of production activities leading to CO2 emissions across China as a consequence of final consumption in four Chinese mega cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Chongqing. Urban consumption not only causes a large amount of emissions within its territory, but also imposes even much more emissions to its surrounding provinces via interregional supply chains. Results show that more than 48% of CO2 emissions related to goods consumed in Chongqing and more than 70% for Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin occurred outside of the respective city boundary. In addition to the usual focus on efficiency, our analysis adds insights into the causes of CO2 emissions by looking at the drivers and types of consumption. Addressing consumption patterns in China's cities is critical for China's low carbon development.

Occurrence, fate and ecotoxicological assessment of pharmaceutically active compounds in wastewater and sludge from wastewater treatment plants in Chongqing, the Three Gorges Reservoir Area

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract The occurrence, removal and ecotoxicological assessment of 21 pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) including antibiotics, analgesics, antiepileptics, antilipidemics and antihypersensitives, were studied at four municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) in Chongqing, the Three Gorges Reservoir Area. Individual treatment unit effluents, as well as primary and secondary sludge, were sampled and analyzed for the selected PhACs to evaluate their biodegradation, persistence and partitioning behaviors. PhACs were identified and quantified using high performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry after solid-phase extraction. All the 21 analyzed PhACs were detected in wastewater and the target PhACs except acetaminophen, ibuprofen and gemfibrozil, were also found in sludge. The concentrations of the antibiotics and SVT were comparable to or even higher than those reported in developed countries, while the case of other target PhACs was opposite. The elimination of PhACs except acetaminophen was incomplete and a wide range of elimination efficiencies during the treatment were observed, i.e. from negative removal to 99.5%. The removal of PhACs was insignificant in primary and disinfection processes, and was mainly achieved during the biological treatment. Based on the mass balance analysis, biodegradation is believed to be the primary removal mechanism, whereas only about 1.5% of the total mass load of the target PhACs was removed by sorption. Experimentally estimated distribution coefficients (<500L/kg, with a few exceptions) also indicate that biodegradation/transformation was responsible for the removal of the target PhACs. Ecotoxicological assessment indicated that the environment concentrations of single compounds (including sulfadiazine, sulfamethoxazole, ofloxacin, azithromycin and erythromycin-H2O) in effluent and sludge, as well as the mixture of the 21 detected PhACs in effluent, sludge and receiving water had a significant ecotoxicological risk to algae. Therefore, further control of PhACs in effluent and sludge is required before their discharge and application to prevent their introduction into the environment.

Evaluation on energy and thermal performance for office building envelope in different climate zones of China

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Effective evaluation on the thermal performance of envelope plays an important role towards the reduction of energy consumption for space cooling and heating. In order to calculate the energy consumption for cooling and heating and assess the whole energy efficiency of envelop designs, a new evaluation index on energy and thermal performance for office building envelop (EETPO) is put forward. Three cities of Shenyang, Wuhan and Guangzhou in China are selected for EETPO analysis, which represent the cold zone, hot summer cold winter zone and hot summer warm winter zone, respectively. The regression equations between EETPO and energy use for cooling/heating are studied in three cities, illustrations indicate that the regression lines fit extremely well and the algorithm is accurate and simple. According to the compulsory indices stipulated by standard (GB50189-2005), the maximum allowable values of EETPO are determined in three cities, the maximum \\{EETPOc\\} in cooling period is 1.750W/m3K in Wuhan and 1.733W/m3K in Guangzhou, the maximum \\{EETPOh\\} in heating period is 0.200W/m3K in Shenyang and 0.414W/m3K in Wuhan. This index and energy use calculation method can help designers to evaluate the whole energy and thermal performance of the proposed envelopes and analyze energy saving effects for different energy conservation measures.

Performance prediction of refrigerant-DMF solutions in a single-stage solar-powered absorption refrigeration system at low generating temperatures

SciTech Connect

A theoretical analysis of the coefficient of performance was undertaken to examine the efficiency characteristics of R22 + DMF, R134a + DMF, R32 + DMF as working fluids, respectively, for a single-stage and intermittent absorption refrigerator which allows the use of heat pipe evacuated tubular collectors. The modeling and simulation of the performance considers both solar collector system and the absorption cooling system. The typical meteorological year file containing the weather parameters for Hangzhou is used to simulate the system. The results show that the system is in phase with the weather. In order to increase the reliability of the system, a hot water storage tank is essential. The optimum ratio of storage tank per solar collector area for Hangzhou's climate for a 1.0 kW system is 0.035-0.043L. Considering the relative low pressure and the high coefficient of performance, R134a + DMF mixture presents interesting properties for its application in solar absorption cycles at moderate condensing and absorbing temperatures when the evaporating temperatures in the range from 278 K to 288 K which are highly useful for food preservation and for air-conditioning in rural areas. Technology roadmap study on carbon capture, utilization and storage in China

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology will likely become an important approach to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and optimize the structure of energy consumption in China in the future. In order to provide guidance and recommendations for CCUS Research, Development and Demonstration in China, a high level stakeholder workshop was held in Chongqing in June 2011 to develop a technology roadmap for the development of CCUS technology. This roadmap outlines the overall vision to provide technically viable and economically affordable technological options to combat climate change and facilitate socio-economic development in China. Based on this vision, milestone goals from 2010 to 2030 are set out in accordance with the technology development environment and current status in China. This study identifies the critical technologies in capture, transport, utilization and storage of CO2 and proposes technical priorities in the different stages of each technical aspect by evaluating indices such as the objective contribution rate and technical maturity, and gives recommendations on deployment of full-chain CCUS demonstration projects. Policies which would support CCUS are also suggested in this study.

Occurrence and fate of pharmaceutically active compounds in the largest municipal wastewater treatment plant in Southwest China: Mass balance analysis and consumption back-calculated model

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract The occurrence and fate of twenty-one pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) were investigated in different steps of the largest wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Southwest China. Concentrations of these PhACs were determined in both wastewater and sludge phases by a high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. Results showed that 21 target PhACs were present in wastewater and 18 in sludge. The calculated total mass load of PhACs per capita to the influent, the receiving water and sludge were 4.95mgd?1person?1, 889.94?gd?1person?1 and 78.57?gd?1person?1, respectively. The overall removal efficiency of the individual PhACs ranged from negative removal to almost complete removal. Mass balance analysis revealed that biodegradation is believed to be the predominant removal mechanism, and sorption onto sludge was a relevant removal pathway for quinolone antibiotics, azithromycin and simvastatin, accounting for 9.3526.96% of the initial loadings. However, the sorption of the other selected PhACs was negligible. The overall pharmaceutical consumption in Chongqing, China, was back-calculated based on influent concentration by considering the pharmacokinetics of PhACs in humans. The back-estimated usage was in good agreement with usage of ofloxacin (agreement ratio: 72.5%). However, the back-estimated usage of PhACs requires further verification. Generally, the average influent mass loads and back-calculated annual per capita consumption of the selected antibiotics were comparable to or higher than those reported in developed countries, while the case of other target PhACs was opposite.

Signal quality in cardiorespiratory monitoring

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

This focus issue of Physiological Measurement follows the 38th Annual International Computing in Cardiology (CinC) Conference, hosted in Hangzhou, China in September 2011 by Zhejiang University. Each year, the NIH-sponsored PhysioNet resource (http://physionet.org/) runs an open competition lasting several months, aimed at encouraging the development of solutions to an unsolved or poorly solved problem in biomedicine, in most cases making use of relevant clinical and experimental data provided freely by PhysioNet. Participants in these annual challenges discuss their diverse approaches to the Challenge problems during dedicated scientific sessions at CinC. The topics of these PhysioNet/CinC Challenges range from physiologic signal processing and analysis to forecasting and modelling clinically important events and processes. In 2011, the PhysioNet/CinC Challenge was to develop an efficient algorithm able to run within a mobile phone, that can provide useful feedback in the process of acquiring a diagnostically usable 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG). At a minimum, such an algorithm should indicate if an ECG is of adequate quality for interpretation, completing its analysis within a few seconds, while the patient is still present, so that another recording can be made immediately if needed. The ECG is among the most useful tools for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases (CVD), the most frequent cause of death worldwide. Although both CVD and mobile phones are ubiquitous, adequate primary health care is not. Many rural populations around the world rely on clinics staffed by lay volunteers to identify those in need of secondary care by health care professionals in distant city hospitals. It is increasingly feasible to provide rural clinics with inexpensive medical instruments such as electrocardiographs that transmit digital ECGs to smart phones for storage and display. These devices extend the reach of diagnosticians to remote areas, but without some means of quality control, technology alone cannot deliver consistently usable information to those able to interpret it. Methods that improve the quality of data collected result in better usage of the scarcest resource, clinical expertise. The growing interest in mHealth to provide point-of-care diagnostics to underserved populations is also driving the desire to leverage the power of smart phones to insert intelligence into medical data acquisition. PhysioNet provided a Challenge data set of 2000 12-lead ECG records, together with an open-source sample application able to run on an Android phone. (These remain freely available to interested readers at http://physionet.org/challenge/2011/.) The application was provided as a working example of a Challenge entry that can read an ECG and classify it as acceptable or unacceptable. Gold standard annotations (grades) for the ECGs were crowd-sourced from the public and invited experts. The annotators were also asked to rate their own expertise or experience level. In all, 8,327 grades were obtained; 1,733 ECGs were classified as acceptable or unacceptable, and 267 as indeterminate. In nearly all of the latter group, only a single grade was available; divided opinions were very rare. There was a high degree of self-consistency, consistency with other observers at the same and at different experience levels, and consistency with the reference classifications regardless of experience level. A random selection of half of the Challenge data set was designated as Set A, a training subset, and participants were provided with the grades for these 1000 ECGs. The remaining records were divided at random into Set B, a public test subset (500 ECGs available for study, with grades withheld) and Set C, a hidden test subset (500 ECGs not available for study, used only by PhysioNet for testing submitted algorithms). Each participant entered one or more of three Challenge events. In event 1, participants developed algorithms for classifying ECGs with respect to quality, and submitted their algorithms' classifications of Set B. Each entry was scored for
