His work focuses on the study of novel magnetic ground states in 3d, 4d and 5d transition-metal oxides via single crystal growth, electrical transport, and magnetic property measurements. SaeHwan received his B. A. in Physics from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 2006 and Ph. D. in Physics from Seoul National University in 2012, advised by Prof. Kee Hoom Kim. His thesis focused on the synthesis of new multiferroic single crystals, in particular hexagonal ferrites (hexaferrites) and the electric/magnetic transport measurements of their magnetoelectric effects to realize cross-control of the electric and magnetic properties by magnetic field and electric fields, respectively. Before joining Argonne, he held a postdoctoral position in Seoul National University working with THz time domain spectroscopy to investigate electromagnons in multiferroic hexaferrites.

To fuel the growth, China addeda total of 455 gigawatts of new generation capacity between 2006 and 2011, which is an increase of 76%in five years. Even so, this capacity does not meet the growing demand for electricity, and most ofChina's industrial sector is facing the worst power shortages since 2004. The Chinese government hasbeen managing the capacity shortfall through direct load control programs. While such mandatoryprograms have spared China from electricity outages, it does so at a high cost to the industrial sector.The load control program has significantly affected business operations and economic outputs, whilefailing to trigger greater energy efficiency improvement. Instead, it has led to a proliferation of dieselgenerators used by industrial facilities when electricity is not delivered, increasing diesel use andassociated air pollution.

LAMMPS stands for Large-scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator and is a code that can be used to model atoms or, as the LAMMPS website says, as a parallel particle simulator at the atomic, meso, or continuum scale. The software is made available by Sandia National Lab and is used in many projects. The LAMMPS Users Workshop and Symposium is held annually. The 2011 meeting took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico on August 9 11. PowerPoint presentations are linked to the agenda for each session, and the titles of the poster presentations appear on the same web page. Only five of the 23 posters are linked, however. Watson Keywords technologies Abstract Various wireless technologies were field-tested in a six-story laboratory building to identify wireless technologies that can scale for future DR applications through very low node density power consumption, and unit cost. Data analysis included analysis of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), packet loss, and link quality at varying power levels and node densities. The narrowband technologies performed well, penetrating the floors of the building with little loss and exhibiting better range than the wideband technology. 900 MHz provided full coverage at 1 watt and substantially complete coverage at 500 mW at the test site. 900 MHz was able to provide full coverage at 100 mW with only one additional relay transmitter, and was the highest-performing technology in the study. 2.4 GHz could not provide full coverage with only a single transmitter at the highest power level tested (63 mW). However, substantially complete coverage was provided at 2.4 GHz at 63 mW with the addition of one repeater node.

Expanding from previous work, this paper summarizes the results from field tests conducted to identify demand response opportunities in energy-intensive industrial facilities such as data centers. There is a significant opportunity for energy and peak-demand reduction in data centers as hardware and software technologies, sensing, and control methods can be closely integrated with the electric grid by means of demand response. The paper provides field test results by examining distributed and networked data center characteristics, end-use loads and control systems, and recommends opportunities and challenges for grid integration. The focus is on distributed data centers and how loads can be "migrated" geographically in response to changing grid supply (increase/decrease). In addition, it examines the enabling technologies and demand-response strategies of high performance computing data centers. The findings showed that the studied data centers provided average load shed of up to 10% with short response times and no operational impact. For commercial program participation, the load-shed strategies must be tightly integrated with data center automation tools to make them less resource-intensive.

As per the 2007 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in the Pacific Gas and Electric Company territory, data centers are estimated to consume 500 megawatts of annual peak electricity. The 2011 data confirm the increase in data center energy use, although it is slightly lower than the EPA forecast. Previous studies have suggested that data centers have significant potential to integrate with supply-side programs to reduce peak loads. In collaboration with California data centers, utilities, and technology vendors, this study conducted field tests to improve the understanding of the demand response opportunities in data centers. The study evaluated an initial set of control and load migration strategies and economic feasibility for four data centers. The findings show that with minimal or no impact to data center operations a demand savings of 25% at the data center level or 10% to 12% at the whole building level can be achieved with strategies for cooling and IT equipment, and load migration. These findings should accelerate the grid-responsiveness of data centers through technology development, integration with the demand response programs, and provide operational cost savings.

Adequate controls and automated systems that provide industrial facility managers real-time energy use and cost information are necessary for successful implementation of a comprehensive electricity strategy; however, little is known about the current control capacity of California industries. To address this gap, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, in close collaboration with California industrial trade associations, conducted a survey to determine the current state of controls technologies in California industries. This study identifies sectors that have the technical capability to implement Demand Response (DR) and Automated Demand Response (Auto-DR). In an effort to assist policy makers and industry in meeting the challenges of real-time pricing, facility operational and organizational factors were taken into consideration to generate recommendations on which sectors Demand Response efforts should be focused. Analysis of the survey responses showed that while the vast majority of industrial facilities have semi- or fully automated control systems, participation in Demand Response programs is still low due to perceived barriers. The results also showed that the facilities that use continuous processes are good Demand Response candidates. When comparing facilities participating in Demand Response to those not participating, several similarities and differences emerged. Demand Response-participating facilities and non-participating facilities had similar timings of peak energy use, production processes, and participation in energy audits. Though the survey sample was smaller than anticipated, the results seemed to support our preliminary assumptions. Demonstrations of Auto-Demand Response in industrial facilities with good control capabilities are needed to dispel perceived barriers to participation and to investigate industrial subsectors suggested of having inherent Demand Response potential.

This was manifest in a power grid failure that resulted in the country's worst blackout, which affected states where 50% of India's 1.2 billion people live. The Government of India is taking measures to address the situation of aging grid infrastructure and integrated demand-side management. The National Action Plan on Climate Change of 2008 outlines a National Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency with actions for electricity sector reform. The U.S.-India Energy Dialogue provides a mechanism for joint activities to address energy issues and electric grid integration. The scope of the buildings-to-grid (B2G) activities by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) have been delineated primarily based on the expertise of LBNL understanding responsive loads for Smart Grid deployments in the United States. This study leverages parallel Smart Grid activities by the Indian and U.S. stakeholders. Its goal is to establish a sustainable B2G collaboration between the U.S. and India, which will facilitate integration of demand-side systems with supply-side systems to advance India's electricity reliability goals. The study will motivate Indian electricity markets by disseminating U.S. experiences and technologies for the uptake of demand response (DR) pilot studies in India. The study delineates immediate and long-term intervention through systematic review of issues, U.S. experiences, and technologies that support local missions. It provides background and description of energy efficiency and DR framework through an organized review of the literature pertaining to various aspects of India's B2G activities. The results are short-term and long-term DR and energy-efficiency integrated action plans for pilot studies and transformative technologies for mitigation and adaptation of electricity reliability. The findings will aid Smart Grid market transformation and policy interventions through technology demonstrations. Based on the priorities identified, a plan for B2G technology pilot studies in India is proposed.

Diamond Call Number LBNL-4283E Keywords commercial buildings, dashboards, energy, feedback, monitoring Abstract Federal agencies are taking many steps to improve the sustainability of their operations, including improving the energy efficiency of their buildings, promoting recycling and reuse of materials, encouraging carpooling and alternative transit schemes, and installing low flow water fixture units are just a few of the common examples. However, an often overlooked means of energy savings is to provide feedback to building users about their energy use through information dashboards connected to a building's energy information system.An Energy Information System (EIS), broadly defined, is a package of performance monitoring software, data acquisition hardware, and communication systems that is used to collect, store, analyze, and display energy information. At a minimum, the EIS provides the whole-building energy-use information (Granderson 2009a). We define a "dashboard" as a display and visualization tool that utilizes the EIS data and technology to provide critical information to users. This information can lead to actions resulting in energy savings, comfort improvements, efficient operations, and more. The tools to report analyzed information have existed in the information technology as business intelligence (Few 2006). The dashboard is distinguished from the EIS as a whole, which includes additional hardware and software components to collect and storage data, and analysis for resources and energy management (Granderson 2009b). EIS can be used for a variety of uses, including benchmarking, base-lining, anomaly detection, off-hours energy use evaluation, load shape optimization, energy rate analysis, retrofit and retro-commissioning savings (Granderson 2009a). The use of these EIS features depends on the specific users. For example, federal and other building managers may use anomaly detection to identify energy waste in a specific building, or to benchmark energy use in similar buildings to identify energy saving potential and reduce operational cost. There are several vendors of EIS technology that provide information on energy and other environmental variables in buildings.
