Geographical, spatial, and temporal distributions of multiple indoor air pollutants in four Chinese provinces

Exposure to indoor air pollution from household energy use depends on fuel, stove, housing characteristics, and stove use behavior. Three important indoor air pollutants - respirable particles (RPM), carbon monoxide (CO), and sulfur dioxide (SO{sub 2}) were monitored for a total of 457 household-days in four poor provinces in China (Gansu, 129 household-days; Guizhou, 127 household-days; Inner Mongolia, 65 household-days; and Shaanxi, 136 household-days), in two time intervals during the heating season to investigate spatial and temporal patterns of pollution. The two provinces where biomass is the primary fuel (Inner Mongolia and Gansu) had the highest RPM concentrations (719 {mu}g/m{sup 3} in the single cooking/living/bedroom in Inner Mongolia in December and 351-661 {mu}g/m{sup 3} in different rooms and months in Gansu); lower RPM concentration were observed in the primarily coal-burning provinces of Guizhou and Shaanxi (202-352 {mu}g/m{sup 3} and 187-361 {mu}g/m{sup 3} in different rooms and months in Guizhou and Shaanxi, respectively). Inner Mongolia and Gansu also had higher CO concentrations. Among the two primarily coal-burning provinces, Guizhou had lower concentrations of CO than Shaanxi. In the two coal-burning provinces, SO{sub 2} concentrations were substantially higher in Shaanxi than in Guizhou. Relative concentrations in different rooms and provinces indicate that in the northern provinces heating is an important source of exposure to indoor pollutants from energy use. Day-to-day variability of concentrations within individual households, although substantial, was smaller than variation across households. The implications of the findings for designing environmental health interventions in each province are discussed. 21 refs., 3 figs., 6 tabs.

This wind energy resource atlas identifies the wind characteristics and distribution of the wind resource in two regions of southeast China. The first region is the coastal area stretching from northern Fujian south to eastern Guangdong and extending approximately 100 km inland. The second region is centered on the Poyang Lake area in northern Jiangxi. This region also includes parts of two other provinces-Anhui and Hubei-and extends from near Anqing in Anhui south to near Nanchang in Jiangxi. The detailed wind resource maps and other information contained in the atlas facilitate the identification of prospective areas for use of wind energy technologies, both for utility-scale power generation and off-grid wind energy applications. We created the high-resolution (1-km2) maps in 1998 using a computerized wind resource mapping system developed at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The mapping system uses software known as a Geographical Information System (GIS).

Microfossil zonation and correlation of nonmarine Triassic of southwestern United States

Recent studies of the nonmarine Triassic in New Mexico and adjacent states by the New Mexico Museum of Natural History have resulted in a data base that for the first allows the use of calcareous microfossils for zonation of the Moenkopi and Chinle formations. Three biostratigraphic assemblages have been recognized thus far: Moenkopi, lower Chinle, and upper Chinle. The Middle Triassic Moenkopi assemblage is characterized by the charophyte Porochara, uncoiled species of Spirorbis, and the presence of the ostracod genus Darwinuloides. The Upper Triassic lower Chinle assemblage is present in the lower shale member of the Chinle Formation. It is characterized by lacking a charophyte component and in containing an exceptionally large species of Darwinula. The upper Chinle assemblage is present in the upper shale and Redonda members of the Chinle Formation and in the Sloan Canyon Formation. It contains the charophyte Stellatochara, a diverse assemblage of darwinulid ostracods, the ostracod genus Lutkevichinella, and a generally coiled species of Spirorbis. These three microfossil assemblages contain several elements of apparent cosmopolitan distribution and should greatly facilitate long-range correlations. Initial correlations suggest the Moenkopi can be correlated with the middle Bundsandstein of Europe and the Lower Triassic of the Caspian depression of the Soviet Union. The lower Chinle assemblage appears to be restricted to the southwestern US with no known correlatives elsewhere. The upper Chinle assemblage contains elements in common with the middle and upper Keuper of Europe and the Upper Triassic Wayaobu Formation of Shaanxi, China. As more collections are made and studied, correlations with other Triassic assemblages should increase in refinement and utility. Additionally, the paleoecologic aspects of these assemblages should help greatly in refining Triassic paleoenvironmental interpretations.
