Outbreak?

NLE Websites -- All DOE Office Websites (Extended Search)

Outbreak? Outbreak? Name: Nathan W Brandsma Status: N/A Age: N/A Location: N/A Country: N/A Date: N/A Question: What are the chances that a diseases, like in the movie outbreak, could occur? Replies: The movie Outbreak is about a disease caused by a virus. Many diseases are actually caused by viruses (AIDS, chicken pox, colds, etc). Most viral diseases can only be prevented (by getting vaccinated), but can't be cured; though we can often reduce the symptoms (like anti-itch cream for chicken pox, or cough drops for a cold). Viral diseases are usually spread from one person to another. What people sometimes worry about is a new virus that is deadly but can be spread really easily (like through the air or by touch). Since there are so many people in the world today, this virus could travel all over the place going from person to person. Nobody knows what the chances are that a virus like that will turn up. Fortunately, there are a number of organizations that keep a close watch on infectious diseases, and have lots of doctors who specialize in containing "outbreaks." So it is something to think about, but I wouldn't stay up at night worrying about it!

Prompt Beta Spectroscopy as a Diagnostic for Mix in Ignited NIF Capsules

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) technology is designed to drive deuterium-tritium (DT) internal confinement fusion (ICF) targets to ignition using indirect radiation from laser beam energy captured in a hohlraum. Hydrodynamical instabilities at interfaces in the ICF capsule leading to mix between the DT fue l and the ablator shell material are of fundamental physical interest and can affect the performance characteristics of the capsule. In this Letter we describe new radiochemical diagnostics for mix processes in ICF capsules with plastic or Be (0.9%Cu) ablator shells. Reactions of high-energy tritons with shell material produce high-energy $\\beta$-emitters. We show that mix between the DT fuel and the shell material enhances high-energy prompt beta emission from these reactions by more than an order of magnitude over that expected in the absence of mix.

Interactions of Jet Fuels with Nitrile O-Rings: Petroleum-Derived versus Synthetic Fuels

SciTech Connect

A transition from petroleum-derived jet fuels to blends with Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) fuels, and ultimately fully synthetic hydro-isomerized F-T fuels has raised concern about the fate of plasticizers in nitrile-butadiene rubber o-rings that are contacted by the fuels as this transition occurs. The partitioning of plasticizers and fuel molecules between nitrile o-rings and petroleum-derived, synthetic, and additized-synthetic jet fuels has been measured. Thermal desorption of o-rings soaked in the various jet fuels followed by gas chromatographic analysis with a mass spectrometric detector showed many of the plasticizer and stabilizer compounds were removed from the o-rings regardless of the contact fuel. Fuel molecules were observed to migrate into the o-rings for the petroleum-derived fuel as did both the fuel and additive for a synthetic F-T jet fuel additized with benzyl alcohol, but less for the unadditized synthetic fuel. The specific compounds or classes of compounds involved in the partitioning were identified and a semiquantitative comparison of relative partitioning of the compounds of interest was made. The results provide another step forward in improving the confidence level of using additized, fuIly synthetic jet fuel in the place of petroleum-derived fueL

Chandra Discovery of an X-ray Jet and Lobes in 3C 15

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We report the Chandra detection of an X-ray jet in 3C 15. The peak of the X-ray emission in the jet is 4.1'' (a projected distance of 5.1 kpc) from the nucleus, and coincident with a component previously identified in the radio and optical jets. We examine four models for the X-ray jet emission: (I) weak synchrotron cooling in equip., (II) moderate synchrotron cooling in equip., (III) weak synchrotron plus SSC cooling, and (IV) moderate synchrotron plus SSC cooling. We argue that case (II) can most reasonably explain the overall emission from knot C. Case (III) is also possible, but requires a large departure from equipartition and for the jet power to be comparable to that of the brightest quasars. Diffuse X-ray emission has also been detected, distributed widely over the full extent (63kpc x 25kpc) of the radio lobes. We compare the total energy contained in the lobes with the jet power estimated from knot C, and discuss the energetic link between the jet and the lobes. We argue that the fueling time (t_fue...

Analysis of drying wood waste fuels with boiler exhaust gases: simulation, performance, and economics

DOE Green Energy (OSTI)

This study evaluates the feasibility of retrofitting a rotary dryer to a hog fuel boiler, using the boiler exhaust gases as the drying medium. Two simulation models were developed. Each model accurately predicts system performance given site-specific parameters such as boiler steam demand, fue moisture content, boiler exhaust temperature and combustion excess air. Three rotary dryers/hog fuel boilers currently in operation in the forest products industry were analyzed. The data obtained were used to validate te accuracy of the simulation models and to establish the performance of boiler/dryer systems under field conditions. The boiler exhaust temperatures observed ranged from 340 to 500/sup 0/F and indicated that significant drying could be realized at moderate stack temperatures, as substantitated by experimental moisture content data. The simulation models were used to evaluate a general boiler/dryer system's sensitivity to variation in operating conditions. The sensitivity analyses indicated that under moderate conditions (400/sup 0/F boiler exhaust, etc.) the installation of a rotary dryer results in a 15% increase in boiler efficiency and a 13% decrease in fuel consumption. Both the field data and sensitivity analyses indicated that a greater increase in boiler efficiency could be realized at higher stack temperatures, approximately a 30% increase in boiler efficiency for a stack temperature of 600/sup 0/F. The cash flow basis payback periods based on hog fuel savings due to dryer installation ranged from 2.7 years for a used dryer to 3.9 years for a new dryer. The payback periods for equivalent BTU savings of gas and oil ranged from 1.2 to 2.0 for gas and from 1.3 to 2.1 years for oil. This study concludes that retrofitting a rotary dryer to an existing hog fuel boiler is an economically feasible option to the forest products industry. 31 references, 24 figures, 18 tables.
