A learning apprentice for browsing

E-Print Network (OSTI)

This paper describes the task of browsing and an agent we have dev eloped to improve the speed and success rate of browsing. The agent is a learning apprentice: it monitors the user’s normal browsing actions and learns a measure of "relevance " to the user interests. It searches the library being browsed, uses the learned measure to evaluate items and presents to the user those that are most relevant. The paper discusses the main issues raised during the development of the browsing agent. These are of general interest not only because browsing is of considerable practical importance but also because it represents a prototypical task for

Gang FTP scheduling of periodic and parallel rigid real-time tasks

E-Print Network (OSTI)

In this paper we consider the scheduling of periodic and parallel rigid tasks. We provide (and prove correct) an exact schedulability test for Fixed Task Priority (FTP) Gang scheduler sub-classes: Parallelism Monotonic, Idling, Limited Gang, and Limited Slack Reclaiming. Additionally, we study the predictability of our schedulers: we show that Gang FJP schedulers are not predictable and we identify several sub-classes which are actually predictable. Moreover, we extend the definition of rigid, moldable and malleable jobs to recurrent tasks.

Correlation of I/M240 and FTP emissions for Alternative Motor Fuels Act test vehicles

SciTech Connect

The National Remewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is managing a series of light duty vehicle chasis dynamometer chasis tests on alternative fuel vehicles for the US Department of Energy (DOE). This testing program is part of a larger demonstration of alternative fuel vehicles that was mandated by the Alternative Motor Fuels Act of 1988 (AMFA). In Phase I of the AMFA emissions test program (AMFA I) 18 vehicles were tested by three laboratories. All the vehicles tested were 1991 model year. In Phase II of the program (AMFA II), the number of vehicles was increased to nearly 300, including M85 Dodge Spirits, E85 Chevrolet Luminas, and compressed natural gas Dodge passenger vans. Phase II testing includes a Federal Test Procedure (FTP) test, followed by two of the EPA`s Inspection/Maintenance (I/M240) tests. It is concluded that the I/M240 test is not an appropriate comparison to the FTP. Further the I/M 240 test is not as reliable as the FTP in estimating the `real world` emissions of these relatively low emission vehicles. 7 refs., 10 figs., 8 tabs.

An Estimate of Diesel High-Efficiency Clean Combustion Impacts on FTP-75 Aftertreatment Requirements (SAE Paper Number 2006-01-3311)

SciTech Connect

A modified Mercedes 1.7-liter, direct-injection diesel engine was operated in both normal and high-efficiency clean combustion (HECC) combustion modes. Four steady-state engine operating points that were previously identified by the Ad-hoc fuels working group were used as test points to allow estimation of the hot-start FTP-75 emissions levels in both normal and HECC combustion modes. The results indicate that operation in HECC modes generally produce reductions in NOX and PM emissions at the expense of CO, NMHC, and H2CO emissions. The FTP emissions estimates indicate that aftertreatment requirements for NOX are reduced, while those for PM may not be impacted. Cycle-average aftertreatment requirements for CO, NMHC, and H2CO may be challenging, especially at the lowest temperature conditions.

PLUG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE AND HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE EMISSIONS UNDER FTP AND US06 CYCLES AT HIGH, AMBIENT, AND LOW TEMPERATURES

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

The concept of a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) is to displace consumption of gasoline by using electricity from the vehicle’s large battery pack to power the vehicle as much as possible with minimal engine operation. This paper assesses the PHEV emissions and operation. Currently, testing of vehicle emissions is done using the federal standard FTP4 cycle on a dynamometer at ambient (75°F) temperatures. Research was also completed using the US06 cycle. Furthermore, research was completed at high (95°F) and low (20°F) temperatures. Initial dynamometer testing was performed on a stock Toyota Prius under the standard FTP4 cycle, and the more demanding US06 cycle. Each cycle was run at 95°F, 75°F, and 20°F. The testing was repeated with the same Prius retrofi tted with an EnergyCS Plug-in Hybrid Electric system. The results of the testing confi rm that the stock Prius meets Super-Ultra Low Emission Vehicle requirements under current testing procedures, while the PHEV Prius under current testing procedures were greater than Super-Ultra Low Emission Vehicle requirements, but still met Ultra Low Emission Vehicle requirements. Research points to the catalyst temperature being a critical factor in meeting emission requirements. Initial engine emissions pass through with minimal conversion until the catalyst is heated to typical operating temperatures of 300–400°C. PHEVs also have trouble maintaining the minimum catalyst temperature throughout the entire test because the engine is turned off when the battery can support the load. It has been observed in both HEVs and PHEVs that the catalyst is intermittently unable to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, which causes further emission releases. Research needs to be done to combat the initial emission spikes caused by a cold catalyst. Research also needs to be done to improve the reduction of nitrogen oxides by the catalyst system.

MetaBrowser: A combined browsing, query, and analysis tool

SciTech Connect

The MetaBrowser design is based on the premise that scientists should not be forced to learn new languages or commands for finding the data they are interested in and for selecting subsets of the data for further analysis. Furthermore, there should be a single system that permits browsing, query, and analysis of the data, so that the scientist does not have to switch between systems. The current version for the MetaBrowser was designed for the DOE CEDR (Comprehensive Epidemiological Data Resource) project, but the same principles can apply to other scientific disciplines. Browsing and query should be combined. It is quite natural for a user to explore the information in the database before deciding what subset of the data to select for further analysis. In general, if there is a large number of datasets (i.e. databases) in the system, then the user would want to find out information about the various datasets (called metadata), before choosing one or more datasets for further exploration. Thus, a metadatabase that holds information about datasets in the systems must exist.

Browsing and Placement of Multiresolution Images on Secondary Storage

E-Print Network (OSTI)

With the rapid advances in computer and communication technologies, there is an increasing demand to build and maintain large image repositories. In order to reduce the demands on I/O and network resources, multiresolution representations of images are being proposed for the storage organization of images. Image decomposition techniques such as wavelets can be used to provide multiple resolution images. The image is represented by several coefficients, one of them with visual similarity to the original image but at a lower resolution. Thus, these visually similar coefficients can be thought of as the thumbnails or icons of the original image. This paper addresses the problem of storing these multiresolution coefficients on disk(s) so that thumbnail browsing as well as image reconstruction can be performed efficiently. Several strategies are evaluated to store the image coefficients on parallel disks. These strategies can be classified into two broad classes depending on whether the bro...

Search Combinators

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The ability to model search in a constraint solver can be an essential asset for solving combinatorial problems. However, existing infrastructure for defining search heuristics is often inadequate. Either modeling capabilities are extremely limited or users are faced with a general-purpose programming language whose features are not tailored towards writing search heuristics. As a result, major improvements in performance may remain unexplored. This article introduces search combinators, a lightweight and solver-independent method that bridges the gap between a conceptually simple modeling language for search (high-level, functional and naturally compositional) and an efficient implementation (low-level, imperative and highly non-modular). By allowing the user to define application-tailored search strategies from a small set of primitives, search combinators effectively provide a rich domain-specific language (DSL) for modeling search to the user. Remarkably, this DSL comes at a low implementation cost to the...

QueryLines: approximate query for visual browsing

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We introduce approximate query techniques for searching and analyzing two-dimensional data sets such as line or scatter plots. Our techniques allow users to explore a dataset by defining QueryLines: soft constraints and preferences for selecting and sorting a subset of the data. By using both preferences and soft constraints for query composition, we allow greater flexibility and expressiveness than previous visual query systems. When the user over-constrains a query, for example, a system using approximate techniques can display ¨near misses¨to enable users to quickly and continuously refine queries.

Higgs Searches

SciTech Connect

We present the status and prospects of Higgs searches at the Tevatron and the LHC. Results from the Tevatron are using up to 5 fb{sup -} of data collected with the CDF and D0 detectors. The major contributing processes include associated production (WH {yields} l{nu}bb, ZH {yields} {nu}{nu}bb, ZH {yields} llbb) and gluon fusion (gg {yields} H {yields} WW{sup (*)}). Improvements across the full mass range resulting from the larger data sets, improved analyses techniques and increased signal acceptance are discussed. Recent results exclude the SM Higgs boson in a mass range of 160 < m{sub H} < 170 GeV. Searches for the neutral MSSM Higgs boson in the region 90 < m{sub A} < 200 GeV exclude tan {beta} values down to 30 for several benchmark scenarios.

Redips: Backlink Search and Analysis on the Web for Business Intelligence Analysis

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The World Wide Web presents significant opportunities for business intelligence analysis as it can provide information about a company’s external environment and its stakeholders. Traditional business intelligence analysis on the Web has focused on simple keyword searching. Recently, it has been suggested that the incoming links, or backlinks, of a company’s Web site (i.e., other Web pages that have a hyperlink pointing to the company of interest) can provide important insights about the company’s “online communities. ” Although analysis of these communities can provide useful signals for a company and information about its stakeholder groups, the manual analysis process can be very time-consuming for business analysts and consultants. In this article, we present a tool called Redips that automatically integrates backlink meta-searching and text-mining techniques to facilitate users in performing such business intelligence analysis on the Web. The architectural design and implementation of the tool are presented in the article. To evaluate the effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction of Redips, an experiment was conducted to compare the tool with two popular business intelligence analysis methods—using backlink search engines and manual browsing. The experiment results showed that Redips was statistically more effective than both benchmark methods (in terms of Recall and F-measure) but required more time in search tasks. In terms of user satisfaction, Redips scored statistically higher than backlink search engines in all five measures used, and also statistically higher than manual browsing in three measures.

Association search in semantic web: search + inference

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Association search is to search for certain instances in semantic web and then make inferences from and about the instances we have found. In this paper, we propose the problem of association search and our preliminary solution for it using Bayesian network. We first minutely define the association search and its categorization. We then define tasks in association search. In terms of Bayesian network, we take ontology taxonomy as network structure in Bayesian network. We use the query log of instances to estimate the network parameters. After the Bayesian network is constructed, we give the solution for association search in the network.

Sure success partial search

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Partial search has been proposed recently for finding the target block containing a target element with fewer queries than the full Grover search algorithm which can locate the target precisely. Since such partial searches will likely be used as subroutines for larger algorithms their success rate is important. We propose a partial search algorithm which achieves success with unit probability.

Quantum search with resonances

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We present a continuous time quantum search algorithm analogous to Grover's. In particular, the optimal search time for this algorithm is proportional to $\\sqrt{N}$, where $N$ is the database size. This search algorithm can be implemented using any Hamiltonian with a discrete energy spectrum through excitation of resonances between an initial and the searched state. This algorithm is robust and, as in the case of Grover's, it allows for an error $O(1/\\sqrt{N})$ in the determination of the searched state. A discrete time version of this continuous time search algorithm is built, and the connection between the search algorithms with discrete and continuous times is established.

Anytime Heuristic Search

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We describe how to convert the heuristic search algorithm A* into an anytime algorithm that finds a sequence of improved solutions and eventually converges to an optimal solution. The approach we adopt uses weighted heuristic search to find an approximate solution quickly, and then continues the weighted search to find improved solutions as well as to improve a bound on the suboptimality of the current solution. When the time available to solve a search problem is limited or uncertain, this creates an anytime heuristic search algorithm that allows a flexible tradeoff between search time and solution quality. We analyze the properties of the resulting Anytime A* algorithm, and consider its performance in three domains; sliding-tile puzzles, STRIPS planning, and multiple sequence alignment. To illustrate the generality of this approach, we also describe how to transform the memory-efficient search algorithm Recursive Best-First Search (RBFS) into an anytime algorithm.

Faceted Semantic Search for Personalized Social Search

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Actual social networks (like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, ...) need to deal with vagueness on ontological indeterminacy. In this paper is analyzed the prototyping of a faceted semantic search for personalized social search using the "joint meaning" in a community environment. User researches in a "collaborative" environment defined by folksonomies can be supported by the most common features on the faceted semantic search. A solution for the context-aware personalized search is based on "joint meaning" understood as a joint construal of the creators of the contents and the user of the contents using the faced taxonomy with the Semantic Web. A proof-of concept prototype shows how the proposed methodological approach can also be applied to existing presentation components, built with different languages and/or component technologies.

The Language of Search

E-Print Network (OSTI)

This paper is concerned with a class of algorithms that perform exhaustive search on propositional knowledge bases. We show that each of these algorithms defines and generates a propositional language. Specifically, we show that the trace of a search can be interpreted as a combinational circuit, and a search algorithm then defines a propositional language consisting of circuits that are generated across all possible executions of the algorithm. In particular, we show that several versions of exhaustive DPLL search correspond to such well-known languages as FBDD, OBDD, and a precisely-defined subset of d-DNNF. By thus mapping search algorithms to propositional languages, we provide a uniform and practical framework in which successful search techniques can be harnessed for compilation of knowledge into various languages of interest, and a new methodology whereby the power and limitations of search algorithms can be understood by looking up the tractability and succinctness of the corresponding propositional l...

Intermittent search strategies

E-Print Network (OSTI)

This review examines intermittent target search strategies, which combine phases of slow motion, allowing the searcher to detect the target, and phases of fast motion during which targets cannot be detected. We first show that intermittent search strategies are actually widely observed at various scales. At the macroscopic scale, this is for example the case of animals looking for food ; at the microscopic scale, intermittent transport patterns are involved in reaction pathway of DNA binding proteins as well as in intracellular transport. Second, we introduce generic stochastic models, which show that intermittent strategies are efficient strategies, which enable to minimize the search time. This suggests that the intrinsic efficiency of intermittent search strategies could justify their frequent observation in nature. Last, beyond these modeling aspects, we propose that intermittent strategies could be used also in a broader context to design and accelerate search processes.

Correlations in Grover search

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Grover search is a well-known quantum algorithm that outperforms any classical search algorithm. It is known that quantum correlations such as entanglement are necessary for the power of quantum computation. But entanglement is not the only kind of quantum correlations. Other quantum correlations such as quantum discord are also useful to capture some aspects of the nonclassical correlation. We investigate several kinds of correlations including both quantum and classical in the whole process of Grover search algorithm. These correlations are the concurrence, entanglement of formation, quantum discord, classical correlation and mutual information. The behaviors of quantum discord, classical correlation and mutual information are almost the same while the concurrence is different. When the search is over, all kinds of correlations are zero, we argue that this is necessary for the final step in the search.

Adding a Visualization Feature to Web Search Engines: It’s Time

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

Since the first world wide web (WWW) search engine quietly entered our lives in 1994, the “information need” behind web searching has rapidly grown into a multi-billion dollar business that dominates the internet landscape, drives e-commerce traffic, propels global economy, and affects the lives of the whole human race. Today’s search engines are faster, smarter, and more powerful than those released just a few years ago. With the vast investment pouring into research and development by leading web technology providers and the intense emotion behind corporate slogans such as “win the web” or “take back the web,” I can’t help but ask why are we still using the very same “text-only” interface that was used 13 years ago to browse our search engine results pages (SERPs)? Why has the SERP interface technology lagged so far behind in the web evolution when the corresponding search technology has advanced so rapidly? In this article I explore some current SERP interface issues, suggest a simple but practical visual-based interface design approach, and argue why a visual approach can be a strong candidate for tomorrow’s SERP interface.

Binary Quantum Search

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Database search has wide applications and is used as a subroutine in many important algorithms. We shall consider a database with one target item. Quantum algorithm finds the target item in a database faster than any classical algorithm. It frequently occurs in practice that only a portion of information about the target item is interesting, or we need to find a group of items sharing some common feature as the target item. This problem is in general formulated as search for a part of the database [a block] containing the target item, instead of the item itself. This is partial search. Partial search trades accuracy for speed, i.e. it works faster than a full search. Partial search algorithm was discovered by Grover and Radhakrishnan. We shall consider optimized version of the algorithm and call it GRK. It can be applied successively [in a sequence]. First the database is partitioned into blocks and we use GRK to find the target block. Then this target block is partitioned into sub-blocks and we use GRK again to find the target sub-block. [We can call it binary quantum search.] Another possibility is to partition the database into sub-blocks directly and use GRK to find the target sub-block in one time. In this paper we prove that the latter is faster [makes less queries to the oracle].

Physicists at Fermilab are searching for the smallest building blocks of Physicists at Fermilab are searching for the smallest building blocks of matter. Currently there are three kinds of building blocks: quarks, leptons and bosons. Read about Fermilab's search for the bottom and top quarks, the accelerator and detectors needed for their discovery, the spin-offs along the way, and the continuing efforts to reveal the basic particles and forces of nature. Searching for the Building Blocks of Matter was an exhibit for the public on the 15th floor of Wilson Hall at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. A committee of physicists and Fermilab employees developed the content for the exhibit. This web site includes the text and graphics from that exhibit. The entire text of the exhibit, not graphics, is available in PDF. Web Maintainer: ed-webmaster@fnal.gov

Automated search for supernovae

SciTech Connect

This thesis describes the design, development, and testing of a search system for supernovae, based on the use of current computer and detector technology. This search uses a computer-controlled telescope and charge coupled device (CCD) detector to collect images of hundreds of galaxies per night of observation, and a dedicated minicomputer to process these images in real time. The system is now collecting test images of up to several hundred fields per night, with a sensitivity corresponding to a limiting magnitude (visual) of 17. At full speed and sensitivity, the search will examine some 6000 galaxies every three nights, with a limiting magnitude of 18 or fainter, yielding roughly two supernovae per week (assuming one supernova per galaxy per 50 years) at 5 to 50 percent of maximum light. An additional 500 nearby galaxies will be searched every night, to locate about 10 supernovae per year at one or two percent of maximum light, within hours of the initial explosion.

Leptoquark searches in TESLA

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Leptoquark searches are considered for possible future e + e and e experiments at TESLA. Expected exclusion limits from direct leptoquark searches are compared with indirect limits expected from the contact interaction analysis. If the leptoquark signal suggested by the existing data is detected at LHC, with mass below 1 TeV, TESLA will be an ideal place to study its properties, provided that the leptoquark Yukawa coupling is not too small. Key words: Leptoquarks, Future colliders, Searches PACS: 12.60.i, 14.80.j 1 Introduction New result on atomic parity violation (APV) in Cesium and unitarity of the CKM matrix, as well as recent LEP2 hadronic cross-section measurements indicate possible deviations from the Standard Model predictions. Exchange of leptoquark type objects has been proposed as a possible explanation for these eects (1). If the observed signal is real it should become clearly visible in future colliders. –1– FREE QUARK SEARCHES

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The basis for much of the theory of particle scattering and hadron spectroscopy is the construction of the hadrons from a set of fractionally charged constituents (quarks). A central but unproven hypothesis of this theory, Quantum Chromodynamics, is that quarks cannot be observed as free particles but are confined to mesons and baryons. Experiments show that it is at best difficult to “unglue” quarks. Accelerator searches at increasing energies have produced no evidence for free quarks, while only a few cosmic-ray and matter searches have produced uncorroborated events. This compilation is only a guide to the literature, since the quoted experimental limits are often only indicative. Reviews

Search for Gluonic Excitations

SciTech Connect

Studies of meson spectra via strong decays provide insight regarding QCD at the confinement scale. These studies have led to phenomenological models for QCD such as the constituent quark model. However, QCD allows for a much richer spectrum of meson states which include extra states such as exotics, hybrids, multi-quarks, and glueballs. First discussion of the status of exotic meson searches is given followed by a discussion of plans at Jefferson Lab to double the energy of the machine to 12 GeV, which will allow us to access photoproduction of mesons in search for gluonic excited states.

Beam-stack search: Integrating backtracking with beam search

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We describe a method for transforming beam search into a complete search algorithm that is guaranteed to find an optimal solution. Called beam-stack search, the algorithm uses a new data structure, called a beam stack, that makes it possible to integrate systematic backtracking with beam search. The resulting search algorithm is an anytime algorithm that finds a good, sub-optimal solution quickly, like beam search, and then backtracks and continues to find improved solutions until convergence to an optimal solution. We describe a memory-efficient implementation of beam-stack search, called divide-and-conquer beam-stack search, as well as an iterative-deepening version of the algorithm. The approach is applied to domain-independent STRIPS planning, and computational results show its advantages.

The SARG Planet Search

E-Print Network (OSTI)

In this chapter of the book "Planets in binaries" we summarize our recent work on the statistical properties of planets in binaries and the differences with respect to planets orbiting single stars. We then present the radial velocity planet search on moderately wide binaries with similar components (twins) ongoing at TNG using the high resolution spectrograph SARG. We discuss the sample selection, the observing and analysis procedures, and the preliminary results of the radial velocity monitoring. We also discuss the second major science goal of the SARG survey, the search for abundance anomalies caused by the ingestion of planetary material by the central star, considering the two samples of twins and the planet hosts in binaries with similar components. Finally, we present some preliminary conclusions on the frequency of planets in binary systems.

Berkeley automated supernova search

SciTech Connect

The Berkeley automated supernova search employs a computer controlled 36-inch telescope and charge coupled device (CCD) detector to image 2500 galaxies per night. A dedicated minicomputer compares each galaxy image with stored reference data to identify supernovae in real time. The threshold for detection is m/sub v/ = 18.8. We plan to monitor roughly 500 galaxies in Virgo and closer every night, and an additional 6000 galaxies out to 70 Mpc on a three night cycle. This should yield very early detection of several supernovae per year for detailed study, and reliable premaximum detection of roughly 100 supernovae per year for statistical studies. The search should be operational in mid-1982.

MINOS Sterile Neutrino Search

SciTech Connect

The Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) is a long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiment designed to measure properties of neutrino oscillation. Using a high intensity muon neutrino beam, produced by the Neutrinos at Main Injector (NuMI) complex at Fermilab, MINOS makes two measurements of neutrino interactions. The first measurement is made using the Near Detector situated at Fermilab and the second is made using the Far Detector located in the Soudan Underground laboratory in northern Minnesota. The primary goal of MINOS is to verify, and measure the properties of, neutrino oscillation between the two detectors using the {nu}{sub {mu}} {yields} V{sub {tau}} transition. A complementary measurement can be made to search for the existence of sterile neutrinos; an oft theorized, but experimentally unvalidated particle. The following thesis will show the results of a sterile neutrino search using MINOS RunI and RunII data totaling {approx}2.5 x 10{sup 20} protons on target. Due to the theoretical nature of sterile neutrinos, complete formalism that covers transition probabilities for the three known active states with the addition of a sterile state is also presented.

The algorithm can also be used for state transfer and communication.

We find that Google’s differential placement of its Flight Search service led to a 65 % decrease in click-through rates for non-paid algorithmic links and an 85 % increase in click-through rates for paid advertising listings of competing online travel agencies. Moreover, the exclusive integration of search engine services into search results disproportionately impacted traffic to popular sites.

Solar Hidden Photon Search

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The Solar Hidden Photon Search (SHIPS) is a joint astroparticle project of the Hamburger Sternwarte and DESY. The main target is to detect the solar emission of a new species of particles, so called Hidden Photons (HPs). Due to kinetic mixing, photons and HPs can convert into each other as they propagate. A small number of solar HPs - originating from photon to HP oscillations in the interior of the Sun - can be converted into photons in a long vacuum pipe pointing to the Sun - the SHIPS helioscope.

Strangelet search at RHIC

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Two position sensitive Shower Maximum Detector (SMDs) for Zero-Degree Calorimeters (ZDCs) were installed by STAR before run 2004 at both upstream and downstream from the interaction point along the beam axis where particles with small rigidity are swept away by strong magnetic field. The ZDC-SMDs provides information about neutral energy deposition as a function of transverse position in ZDCs. We report the preliminary results of strangelet search from a triggered data-set sampling 100 million Au+Au collisions at top RHIC energy.

LHC Higgs Boson searches

E-Print Network (OSTI)

A summary of the Higgs boson searches by the ATLAS and CMS collabrations using 1 f b-1 of LHC data is presented, concentrating on the Standard Model Higgs boson. Both experiments have the sensitivity to exclude at 95% CL a Standard Model Higgs boson in most of the Higgs boson mass region between about 130 GeV and 400 GeV. The observed data allow the exclusion of a Higgs Boson of mass 155 GeV to 190 GeV and 295 GeV to 450 GeV (ATLAS) and 149 GeV to 206 GeV and 300 GeV to 440 GeV (CMS). The lower limits are not as constraining as might be expected due to an excess in both experiments of order 2-3{\\sigma} which could be related to a low mass Higgs boson or to a statistical fluctuation.

A Search for

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We search for the decay B \\Gamma ! \\Gamma in a sample of over 2 million charged B decays using the CLEO detector. We use the channel in which the tau decays leptonically, and combine this lepton with the missing energy and momentum in the event to form a B candidate. A fit to the mass and energy distribution of these B candidates yields \\Gamma14 \\Sigma 46 signal events. This value corresponds to an upper limit of B(B \\Gamma ! \\Gamma ) ! 2:2 \\Theta 10 \\Gamma3 at the 90% confidence level. Permanent address: University of Hawaii at Manoa 1 I. INTRODUCTION The purely leptonic decays of mesons are perhaps the simplest of all known decays of hadrons. Unlike all other decays, the final state is unaffected by strong interactions. As a consequence, the rate for these decays can be predicted by many models of particle interactions, and measurement of the rate can provide information about a particular model that can be interpreted easily. In this paper we report on a new ...

We present an overview on the interplay between direct searches for new physics at the LHC and indirect constraints from the flavour sector, with an emphasis on the implications of the recent LHCb results. The complementarity with the Higgs search results will also be addressed. We show the correlation and complementarity between the different sectors in the context of a few specific examples in supersymmetry.

Attacks on Local Searching Tools

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The Google Desktop Search is an indexing tool, currently in beta testing, designed to allow users fast, intuitive, searching for local files. The principle interface is provided through a local web server which supports an interface similar to Google.com's normal web page. Indexing of local files occurs when the system is idle, and understands a number of common file types. A optional feature is that Google Desktop can integrate a short summary of a local search results with Google.com web searches. This summary includes 30-40 character snippets of local files. We have uncovered a vulnerability that would release private local data to an unauthorized remote entity. Using two different attacks, we expose the small snippets of private local data to a remote third party.

Fault-ignorant Quantum Search

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We investigate the problem of quantum searching on a noisy quantum computer. Taking a 'fault-ignorant' approach, we analyze quantum algorithms that solve the task for various different noise strengths, which are possibly unknown beforehand. We prove lower bounds on the runtime of such algorithms and thereby find that the quadratic speedup is necessarily lost (in our noise models). However, for low but constant noise levels the algorithms we provide (based on Grover's algorithm) still outperform the best noiseless classical search algorithm.

Tips for Daylighting with Windows Tips for Daylighting with Windows These guidelines provide an integrated approach to the cost-effective design of perimeter zones in new commercial buildings. They function as a quick reference for designers through a set of easy steps and rules-of-thumb, emphasizing "how-to" practical details. References are given to more detailed sources of information, should the reader wish to go further. No guidelines can answer all possible questions from all types of users. However, this document addresses the most commonly occurring scenarios. The guidance here is limited by the medium; short paper documents can only go so far in assisting a designer with a unique project. This document has been carefully shaped to best meet the needs of a designer when time does not permit a more extensive form of assistance.

On the right-hand side of your screen there is a search box with two buttons under it labeled "Go" and "Search". Put your keyword in the searchbox. Go - (or Enter on keyboard) will take you automatically to the article, if it exists. Search - will search the text of all pages on the wiki (with some restrictions, see below). If you clicked "Search", or you clicked "Go" and the page you were looking for did not exist, you will be presented with a list of articles that matched your search criteria (or a message that no matches were found). Monkey search: a novel metaheuristic search for global optimization

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

We propose a novel metaheuristic search for global optimization inspired by the behavior of a monkey climbing trees looking for food. The tree branches are represented as perturbations between two neighboring feasible solutions of the considered global optimization problem. The monkey mark and update these branches leading to good solutions as it climbs up and down the tree. A wide selection of perturbations can be applied based on other metaheuristic methods for global optimization. We show that Monkey Search is competitive compared to the other metaheuristic methods for optimizing Lennard?Jones and Morse clusters

Opportunistic Content Search of Smartphone Photos

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Photos taken by smartphone users can accidentally contain content that is timely and valuable to others, often in real-time. We report the system design and evaluation of a distributed search system, Theia, for crowd-sourced real-time content search of smartphone photos. Because smartphones are resource-constrained, Theia incorporates two key innovations to control search cost and improve search efficiency. Incremental Search expands search scope incrementally and exploits user feedback. Partitioned Search leverages the cloud to reduce the energy consumption of search in smartphones. Through user studies, measurement studies, and field studies, we show that Theia reduces the cost per relevant photo by an average of 59%. It reduces the energy consumption of search by up to 55% and 81% compared to alternative strategies of executing entirely locally or entirely in the cloud. Search results from smartphones are obtained in seconds. Our experiments also suggest approaches to further improve these results.

We present the results on the searches for the SM and the non-SM Higgs boson production in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV with the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Using data corresponding to 300--700pb-1, we search for the Higgs boson in various production and decay channels. No signal is observed, therefore, we set upper limits on the production cross-section times branching fraction as a function of the Higgs boson mass.

Neutral Supersymmetric Higgs Boson Searches

SciTech Connect

In some Supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, including the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), the coupling of Higgs bosons to b-quarks is enhanced. This enhancement makes the associated production of the Higgs with b-quarks an interesting search channel for the Higgs and Supersymmetry at D0. The identification of b-quarks, both online and offline, is essential to this search effort. This thesis describes the author's involvement in the development of both types of b-tagging and in the application of these techniques to the MSSM Higgs search. Work was carried out on the Level-3 trigger b-tagging algorithms. The impact parameter (IP) b-tagger was retuned and the effects of increased instantaneous luminosity on the tagger were studied. An extension of the IP-tagger to use the z-tracking information was developed. A new b-tagger using secondary vertices was developed and commissioned. A tool was developed to allow the use of large multi-run samples for trigger studies involving b-quarks. Offline, a neural network (NN) b-tagger was trained combining the existing offline lifetime based b-tagging tools. The efficiency and fake rate of the NN b-tagger were measured in data and MC. This b-tagger was internally reviewed and certified by the Collaboration and now provides the official b-tagging for all analyses using the Run IIa dataset at D0. A search was performed for neutral MSSM Higgs bosons decaying to a b{bar b} pair and produced in association with one or more b-quarks. Limits are set on the cross-section times the branching ratio for such a process. The limits were interpreted in various MSSM scenarios. This analysis uses the NN b-tagger and was the first to use this tool. The analysis also relies on triggers using the Level-3 IP b-tagging tool described previously. A likelihood discriminant was used to improve the analysis and a neural network was developed to cross-check this technique. The result of the analysis has been submitted to PRL and is comparable to the result from CDF in the same channel which uses approximately twice the integrated luminosity.

Higgs bosons searches at CDF

SciTech Connect

Advanced analysis techniques together with increasing data samples are bringing the sensitivity of CDF to the Higgs boson very close to the SM predictions. These improvements translate into more stringent exclusions of parameter space in BSM Higgs sectors and of the SM mass range. The CDF Collaboration has a very active program on Higgs searches that comprises most accessible production mechanisms and decay channels in {bar p}p collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV. This contribution will also review the combination of the different channels, data samples and analysis techinques that currently produces one of the most exciting experimental results in our field.

Higgs searches at the Tevatron

SciTech Connect

Recent preliminary results obtained by the CDF and D0 Collaborations on searches for the Higgs boson in p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider are discussed. The data, corresponding to integrated luminosities of about 1 fb{sup -1}, show no excess of a signal above the expected background in any of the decay channels examined. Instead, upper limits at 95% Confidence Level on the cross section are established. Further, a combined Standard Model Tevatron cross section limit is presented.

We present the latest results on searches for the standard and beyond-the-standard model Higgs bosons in proton-antiproton collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV by the CDF and D0 experiments at the Fermilab Tevatron. No significant excess is observed above the expected background, and the cross section limits for the Higgs bosons are calculated. It is noticed that the standard model Higgs boson in the mass range 163-166 GeV/c{sup 2} is excluded at the 95% C.L.

Dark Photon Search at BABAR

SciTech Connect

Presented is the current progress of a search for the signature of a dark photon or new particle using the BaBar data set. We search for the processes e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} {gamma}{sub ISR}A{prime},A{prime} {yields} e{sup +}e{sup -} and e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} {gamma}{sub ISR}{gamma}, {gamma} {yields} A{prime},A{prime} {yields} e{sup +}e{sup -}, where {gamma}{sub ISR} is an initial state radiated photon of energy E{sub {gamma}} >= 1 GeV. Twenty-five sets of Monte Carlo, simulating e{sup +}e{sup -} collisions at an energy of 10.58 GeV, were produced with different values of the A{prime} mass ranging from 100 MeV to 9.5 GeV. The mass resolution is calculated based on Monte Carlo simulations. We implement ROOT's Toolkit for Multivariate Analysis (TMVA), a machine learning tool that allows us to evaluate the signal character of events based on many of discriminating variables. TMVA training is conducted with samples of Monte Carlo as signal and a small portion of Run 6 as background. The multivariate analysis produces additional cuts to separate signal and background. The signal efficiency and sensitivity are calculated. The analysis will move forward to fit the background and scan the residuals for the narrow resonance peak of a new particle.

The XENON Dark Matter Search

SciTech Connect

The XENON experiment will search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPS), a leading candidate for the dark matter content of the Universe. The XENON detector uses the simultaneous measurement of ionization and scintillation in liquid xenon to distinguish between nuclear recoils and background electronic interactions. Ionization electrons are extracted into the xenon vapor where they produce a large proportional scintillation signal in a grid assembly. Both prompt and proportional scintillation light are detected by PMT arrays on the top and bottom of the active liquid xenon volume. The distribution of proportional scintillation light in the top PMT array can be used to achieve xy position resolution, while the ionization drift time gives position resolution in the z direction. This allows the definition of a low-background fiducial volume. I describe the results of the R and D phase of this project before providing a status update on the XENON10 phase.

Higgs searches at the Tevatron

SciTech Connect

The search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in p{bar p} collisions at 1.96 TeV performed by CDF and D0 collaborations at the Tevatron collider is reported in this paper. The Higgs candidate events are reconstructed using different final states in order to optimize the sensitivity in the full range of the Higgs mass. The presented results use different statistical samples collected by the Tevatron up to 5.9 fb{sup -1}. Combining the most updated limits provided by the two experiments for all the final states analyzed, the Standard Model Higgs boson is excluded at 95% C.L. in the mass range 158-175 GeV/c{sup 2}, in good agreement with the prediction for the analyzed data sample.

Exactness of the original Grover search algorithm

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

It is well-known that when searching one out of four, the original Grover's search algorithm is exact; that is, it succeeds with certainty. It is natural to ask the inverse question: If we are not searching one out of four, is Grover's algorithm definitely not exact? In this article we give a complete answer to this question through some rationality results of trigonometric functions.

Markovian Search Games in Heterogeneous Spaces

SciTech Connect

We consider how to search for a mobile evader in a large heterogeneous region when sensors are used for detection. Sensors are modeled using probability of detection. Due to environmental effects, this probability will not be constant over the entire region. We map this problem to a graph search problem and, even though deterministic graph search is NP-complete, we derive a tractable, optimal, probabilistic search strategy. We do this by defining the problem as a differential game played on a Markov chain. We prove that this strategy is optimal in the sense of Nash. Simulations of an example problem illustrate our approach and verify our claims.
