This report presents the results of the preliminary assessment (PA) conducted by Argonne National Laboratory at the Arizona Army National Guard property near Florence, Arizona. Preliminary assessments of federal facilities are being conducted to compile the information necessary for completing preremedial activities and to provide a basis for establishing corrective actions in response to releases of hazardous substances. The principal objective of the PA is to characterize the site accurately and determine the need for further action by examining site activities, quantities of hazardous substances present, and potential pathways by which contamination could affect public health and the environment. Florence Military Reservation is a 5,655-acre site located in the southern portion of Arizona, about 65 mi southeast of Phoenix, in the county of Pinal. Florence Military Reservation includes Unit Training Equipment Site (UTES) 1, an artillery firing range, and ammunition storage. The subject of this PA is the UTES. The environmentally significant operations associated with the UTES property are (1) vehicle maintenance and refueling, (2) supply/storage of materials, and (3) the vehicle washrack.

Health hazard evaluation report HETA 92-064-2222, Ohio Valley Litho Color, Inc. , Florence, Kentucky

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

In response to a confidential request from a worker at Ohio Valley Litho Color, Inc. (SIC-2652) in Florence, Kentucky, an evaluation was made of possible exposure to electrical currents during the operation of an industrial papercutter. The company used industrial papercutters to prepare various types of advertising material for their clients. An operator of the papercutters had been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Measurements indicated that operators of the equipment had electrical currents of 9.7 to 160 microamperes passing through their bodies. There do not appear to be any standards related to exposure to currents of this magnitude passing through the body. The authors conclude that no electrocution or electrical burn hazard existed at the time of the survey. The lack of data to indicate the outcome of chronic exposure to low levels of currents passing through the body over a period of several years makes it impossible to rule out a connection between this exposure and chronic diseases such as brain tumors or cancers. The authors recommend that efforts be made to eliminate this exposure.

Stereotactic Radiotherapy for Adrenal Gland Metastases: University of Florence Experience

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

Purpose: To evaluate a retrospective single-institution outcome after hypofractionated stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for adrenal metastases. Methods and Materials: Between February 2002 and December 2009, we treated 48 patients with SBRT for adrenal metastases. The median age of the patient population was 62.7 years (range, 43-77 years). In the majority of patients, the prescription dose was 36 Gy in 3 fractions (70% isodose, 17.14 Gy per fraction at the isocenter). Eight patients were treated with single-fraction stereotactic radiosurgery and forty patients with multi-fraction stereotactic radiotherapy. Results: Overall, the series of patients was followed up for a median of 16.2 months (range, 3-63 months). At the time of analysis, 20 patients were alive and 28 patients were dead. The 1- and 2-year actuarial overall survival rates were 39.7% and 14.5%, respectively. We recorded 48 distant failures and 2 local failures, with a median interval to local failure of 4.9 months. The actuarial 1-year disease control rate was 9%; the actuarial 1- and 2-year local control rate was 90%. Conclusion: Our retrospective study indicated that SBRT for the treatment of adrenal metastases represents a safe and effective option with a control rate of 90% at 2 years.

Noise and Hearing Noise and Hearing Name: Florence Status: student Grade: 9-12 Location: Outside U.S. Country: Australia Date: Spring 2012 Question: Why does noise damage our hearing? Replies: Hi Florence, The principal mechanism for hearing loss due to noise, whether chronic or acute, is through damage to the stereocilia possessing sense cells of the cochlea in the inner ear compartment. The cochlea is a fluid filled organ that is lined with sensing cells possessing stereocilia(little hairs) that vibrate in response to sound. The cochlea is horn shaped so that the vibrations of the cilia reflect the frequency of the sound perceived. Vibrating stereocilia are attached to the sensing cell which converts the vibrations to a neural signal and that impulse is sent on to the brain through cochlear nerve fibers.

The effects of aircraft noise at Williams Air Force Base Auxiliary Field on residential property values

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

This report considers the environmental consequences of moving the flight training operations of the US Air Force's 82nd Flying Training Wing from the auxiliary airfield, Coolidge-Florence Municipal Airport (CFMA), to a more remote location in Pinal County, Arizona. It examines how actual noise from touch-and-go flights of T-37 aircraft and perceived (anticipated) noise affect the market value of residential property near CFMA. Noise, measured by a noise index, is correlated with market values through a regression analysis applied to a hedonic price model of the Coolidge-Florence housing market. Prices and characteristics of 42 residential properties sold in 1987 and 1988 were used to estimate a perceived noise effect. The report finds that the coefficient on the measure of perceived noise, based on the noise exposure forecast (NEF) index, is statistically insignificant, even though the sign and value are consistent with those estimated in other studies. It concludes that current flights do not have a significant effect on residential property values, partially because there is no housing near CFMA. This and larger studies indicate that flight operations at a new auxiliary airfield would not affect property values if runways were at least 12,000 feet away from housing. 12 refs., 2 tabs.

Entropic measures of individual mobility patterns

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Understanding human mobility from a microscopic point of view may represent a fundamental breakthrough for the development of a statistical physics for cognitive systems and it can shed light on the applicability of macroscopic statistical laws for social systems. Even if the complexity of individual behaviors prevents a true microscopic approach, the introduction of mesoscopic models allows the study of the dynamical properties for the non-stationary states of the considered system. We propose to compute various entropy measures of the individual mobility patterns obtained from GPS data that record the movements of private vehicles in the Florence district, in order to point out new features of human mobility related to the use of time and space and to define the dynamical properties of a stochastic model that could generate similar patterns. Moreover, we can relate the predictability properties of human mobility to the distribution of time passed between two successive trips. Our analysis suggests the exist...

ISHHC XIII International Symposium on the Relations betweenHomogeneous and Heterogeneous Catalysis

SciTech Connect

The International Symposium on Relations between Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Catalysis (ISHHC) has a long and distinguished history. Since 1974, in Brussels, this event has been held in Lyon, France (1977), Groeningen, The Netherlands (1981); Asilomar, California (1983); Novosibirsk, Russia (1986); Pisa, Italy (1989); Tokyo, Japan (1992); Balatonfuered, Hungary (1995); Southampton, United Kingdom (1999); Lyon, France (2001); Evanston, Illinois (2001) and Florence, Italy (2005). The aim of this international conference in Berkeley is to bring together practitioners in the three fields of catalysis, heterogeneous, homogeneous and enzyme, which utilize mostly nanosize particles. Recent advances in instrumentation, synthesis and reaction studies permit the nanoscale characterization of the catalyst systems, often for the same reaction, under similar experimental conditions. It is hoped that this circumstance will permit the development of correlations of these three different fields of catalysis on the molecular level. To further this goal we aim to uncover and focus on common concepts that emerge from nanoscale studies of structures and dynamics of the three types of catalysts. Another area of focus that will be addressed is the impact on and correlation of nanosciences with catalysis. There is information on the electronic and atomic structures of nanoparticles and their dynamics that should have importance in catalyst design and catalytic activity and selectivity.
