Noise and Hearing Noise and Hearing Name: Florence Status: student Grade: 9-12 Location: Outside U.S. Country: Australia Date: Spring 2012 Question: Why does noise damage our hearing? Replies: Hi Florence, The principal mechanism for hearing loss due to noise, whether chronic or acute, is through damage to the stereocilia possessing sense cells of the cochlea in the inner ear compartment. The cochlea is a fluid filled organ that is lined with sensing cells possessing stereocilia(little hairs) that vibrate in response to sound. The cochlea is horn shaped so that the vibrations of the cilia reflect the frequency of the sound perceived. Vibrating stereocilia are attached to the sensing cell which converts the vibrations to a neural signal and that impulse is sent on to the brain through cochlear nerve fibers.

United States Energy Secretary Hazel O`Leary addressed the congress and later met with a group of mainly U.S. conferees to discuss competitiveness and the state of the geothermal industry, (2) A session at the World Geothermal Congress which dealt with the outlook and status of worldwide geothermal direct use including information on heat pumps and investment, and (3) An article about a redevelopment project in Klamath Falls, Oregon which involves a streetscape for the downtown area with brick crosswalks, antique-style light fixtures, park benches, and geothermally heated sidewalks and crosswalks.

Remote sensing of marine environment with the high spectral resolution fluorosensor FLIDAR3

SciTech Connect

The FLIDAR, built at IROE-CNR in Florence, was the first of a new generation of sensors operating with high spectral resolution both as fluorescence lidar and passive spectrometer. This research includes the sensor development and the study of a suitable data processing for an extensive monitoring of the marine environment. As a result, both the laboratory and field experiments allowed the monitoring of: water column temperature, by the water-Raman spectral shape; oil pollution (oil class identification and thickness), by both the oil fluorescence spectral features and the water-Raman signal intensity; phytoplankton and phytobenthos (identification and stress), by their fluorescence spectral signatures and their spectral behavior; and mucillagine, its observation has been carried out directly in the field, addressing a method for its detection. Finally, the FLIDAR has been operating since 1991 from different platforms, such as ship, helicopter, and airplane.

RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX WITH A LOW ENERGY CONSUMPTION AT PRATO (ITALY)

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

ABSTRACT During recent years in Italy there has been widespread experimentation with passive solar technologies, carried out for the main part on multi-storey residential buildings in highly urbanized situations. Some important findings have emerged from these; in particular bioclimatic criteria have shown the possibility of allowing 50% higher energy savings with respect to traditional buildings, while on the other hand bringing very high extra-costs (up to 40 - 50% of construction costs) in addition to considerable inconveniences for inhabitants (reduction in quality of living conditions, cooling problems in Summer). The pilot project we are presenting has come out of these reflections and is the outcome of collaboration between the Florence Autonomous Institute for Pubblic Housing and AGIP Petroli; its principal goal is the sperimentation with intermediary solutions between the traditional building model and bioclimatic prototypes constructed during the last few years, thereby examining the real feasibility of low - energy consumption building within the ambit of constraints placed upon government subsidized building. KEYWORDS Italy, housing, low energy consumption housing, bioclimatic architecture, passive solar sistems.

Ionospheric modification experiments with the Arecibo Heating Facility

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The results obtained with ionospheric modification experiments over the three years preceding the XXI General Assembly of URSI in 1984 at Florence are reviewed. The topics discussed include weak electromagnetic sidebands observed using a single pump frequency, the HF-induced plasma line at 3.175 \\{MHz\\} and its similarity to the plasma lines observed using higher HF frequencies near Tromsø, the HF-enhanced plasma line observed with the 50 \\{MHz\\} radar, the HF-induced plasma line with a doublehumped spectrum below threshold. HF-induced plasma line spectra with height discrimination using a new technique, the HF-induced plasma line and ion line spectra obtained with two pumps differing in frequency by a few kHz, narrow features such as the OTSI in the HF-enhanced plasma line and ion line spectra observed by a new technique, the use of such narrow features for measuring the line-of-sight electron drift velocity, the discovery of a radical qualitative change in the spectrum of the HF-induced plasma line as the HF power (CW) is increased or as the duty cycle is changed while pulsing, observations of the temporal development of the enhancement of the thermal plasma line at the peak of the F2-layer by electrons accelerated during ionospheric heating studies of artificial density stratification resulting from the standing wave nature of the heating wave and strong electromagnetic sidebands generated by two Powerful HF radio waves differing from each other by some tens of Hz. Theoretical work on soliton formation and on VLF generation by HF heating is briefly mentioned, as well as experimental studies of self-focusing by observing the scintillation of extraterrestrial radio sources, direct conversion and studies of short scale field-aligned irregularities by VHF radar backscatter during ionospheric modification.

Basin center - fractured source rock plays within tectonically segmented foreland (back-arc) basins: Targets for future exploration

SciTech Connect

Production from fractured reservoirs has long been an industry target, but interest in this type play has increased recently because of new concepts and technology, especially horizontal drilling. Early petroleum exploration programs searched for fractured reservoirs from shale, tight sandstones, carbonates, or basement in anticlinal or fault traps, without particular attention to source rocks. Foreland basins are some of the best oil-generating basins in the world because of their rich source rocks. Examples are the Persian Gulf basin, the Alberta basin and Athabasca tar sands, and the eastern Venezuela basin and Orinoco tar sands. Examples of Cretaceous producers are the wrench-faulted La Paz-Mara anticlinal fields, Maracaibo basin, Venezuela; the active Austin Chalk play in an extensional area on the north flank of the Gulf of Mexico continental margin basin; and the Niobrara Chalk and Pierre Shale plays of the central Rocky Mountains, United States. These latter plays are characteristic of a foreland basin fragmented into intermontane basins by the Laramide orogeny. The Florence field, Colorado, discovered in 1862, and the Silo field, Wyoming, discovered in 1980, are used as models for current prospecting and will be described in detail. The technologies applied to fracture-source rock plays are refined surface and subsurface mapping from new log suites, including resistivity mapping; 3D-3C seismic, gravity, and aeromagnetic mapping; borehole path seismic mapping associated with horizontal drilling; fracture mapping with the Formation MicroScanner and other logging tools; measurements while drilling and other drilling and completion techniques; surface geochemistry to locate microseeps; and local and regional lineament discrimination.
