The key effort is on the Class B performance monitoring program, including a limited amount of special data evaluation and analysis. Other work relates to design tools, passive selection criteria, hot water performance documentation, and other renewable systems. (2) Technical Services in Support of Appropriate Technology Program. A total of 84 project files have been reviewed and summarized, telephone contacts and selected site visits are being made on a small number of active projects, and technical information dissemination tasks are underway. A summary paper on project activities was prepared and approved for publication.
This paper presents the design process of collaborative tools, based on ICT, aiming at supporting the tasks of the team that manages an outage of an energy production plant for maintenance activities. The design process follows an iterative and multidisciplinary approach, based on a collective tasks modeling of the outage management team in the light of Socio Organizational and Human (SOH) field studies, and on the state of the art of ICT. Field test of the collaborative tools designed plays a great place in this approach, allowing taking into account the operational world but involves also some risks which must be managed. To implement tools on all the production plants, we build an 'operational concept' with a level of description which authorizes the evolution of tools and allows some local adaptations. The field tests provide lessons on the ICT topics. For examples: the status of the remote access tools, the potential of use of a given information input by an actor for several individual and collective purposes, the actors perception of the tools meaning, and the requirements for supporting the implementation of change. Volume 3 of this three-volume report for RP1419-1 describes the tests on selected residential, commercial, and small industry areas of the Detroit Edison Company system and the statistical analysis performed on the test data gathered. The purpose of the field testing was to provide data to analyze changes in energy consumption due to changes in feeder voltage levels. Detroit Edison was chosen to represent a winter peaking load area. Original intent was to present these results simultaneously with results from a summer peaking load area, Texas Electric Service Company (TESCO). Unavoidable delays retarded the Detroit study results to this Volume 3. TESCO results were reported in Volume 1, and the Distribution System Analysis and Simulation (DSAS) program for these studies was presented in Volume 2 in the form of a User's Manual.

Ancillary services are those functions performed by electrical generating, transmission, system-control, and distribution-system equipment and people to support the basic services of generating capacity, energy supply, and power delivery. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission defined ancillary services as ``those services necessary to support the transmission of electric power from seller to purchaser given the obligations of control areas and transmitting utilities within those control areas to maintain reliable operations of the interconnected transmission system.`` FERC identified six ancillary services reactive power and voltage control, loss compensation, scheduling and dispatch, load following, system protection, and energy imbalance. Our earlier work identified 19 ancillary services Here we offer a revised set of seven ancillary services and mention several other services that merit consideration. In preparing its final rule on open-access transmission service, we suggest that FERC consider splitting its system-protection service into its two primary pieces, reliability reserve and supplemental-operating reserve. We also suggest that FERC define more sharply all of the ancillary services. especially load-following reserve and energy imbalance. Finally, we suggest that FERC consider other services and their provision in a restructured electricity industry; these services include black-start capability, time correction, standby service. planning reserve, redispatch. transmission services, power quality, and planning and engineering services.

Although valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries have served in stationary applications for more than a decade, proprietary concerns of battery manufacturers and users and varying approaches to record-keeping have made the data available on performance and life relatively sparse and inconsistent. Such incomplete data are particularly detrimental to understanding the cause or causes of premature capacity loss (PCL) reported in VRLA batteries after as little as two years of service. The International Lead Zinc Research Organization (ILZRO), in cooperation with Sandia National Laboratories, has initiated a multi-phase project to characterize relationships between batteries, service conditions, and failure modes; establish the degree of correlation between specific operating procedures and PCL; identify operating procedures that mitigate PCL; identify best-fits between the operating requirements of specific applications and the capabilities of specific VRLA technologies; and recommend combinations of battery design, manufacturing processes, and operating conditions that enhance VRLA performance and reliability. This paper, prepared before preliminary conclusions were possible, presents the surveys distributed to manufacturers and end-users; discusses the analytic approach; presents an overview of the responses to the surveys and trends that emerge in the early analysis of the data; and previews the functionality of the database being constructed. The presentation of this paper will include preliminary results and information regarding the follow-on workshop for the study.

Recurring waste management noncompliance problems have spurred a fundamental site-wide process revision to characterize and disposition wastes at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory. The reengineered method, termed Waste Generator Services, will streamline the waste acceptance process and provide waste generators comprehensive waste management services through a single, accountable organization to manage and disposition wastes in a timely, cost-effective, and compliant manner. This report outlines the strategy for implementing Waste Generator Services across the INEEL. It documents the culmination of efforts worked by the LMITCO Environmental Management Compliance Reengineering project team since October 1997. These efforts have included defining problems associated with the INEEL waste management process; identifying commercial best management practices; completing a review of DOE Complex-wide waste management training requirements; and involving others through an Integrated Process Team approach to provide recommendations on process flow, funding/charging mechanisms, and WGS organization. The report defines the work that will be performed by Waste Generator Services, the organization and resources, the waste acceptance process flow, the funding approach, methods for measuring performance, and the implementation schedule and approach. Field deployment will occur first at the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant in June 1998. Beginning in Fiscal Year 1999, Waste Generator Services will be deployed at the other major INEEL facilities in a phased approach, with implementation completed by March 1999.

In any organization, the importance of failure management cannot be mentioned by a single word. However, most failure analysis is dominated by the manufacturing sector, despite the increasing importance of the service sector. In response, this paper proposes a systematic approach for identifying and evaluating potential failures using a service-specific failure mode and effect analysis (service-specific FMEA) and grey relational analysis. The proposed approach consists of two stages: construction of service-specific FMEA and application of grey relational analysis. The first stage, construction of service-specific FMEA, aims at incorporating the service specific characteristics to the traditional FMEA, providing 3 dimensions and 19 sub-dimensions, encompassing the service characteristics. At the second stage, grey relational analysis is applied to calculate the risk priority of each failure mode to deal with the necessities of a flexible evaluation framework under these interrelated multi-dimensions. The proposed approach is expected to help the service managers to manage the service failure within the systematic framework. This paper contributes to the field in that it incorporates the service-specific characteristics to the traditional FMEA, as well as providing the appropriate evaluation framework using grey relational analysis.

Hanford Analytical Services Quality Assurance Requirements Document (HASQARD) is issued by the Analytical Services, Program of the Waste Management Division, US Department of Energy (US DOE), Richland Operations Office (DOE-RL). The HASQARD establishes quality requirements in response to DOE Order 5700.6C (DOE 1991b). The HASQARD is designed to meet the needs of DOE-RL for maintaining a consistent level of quality for sampling and field and laboratory analytical services provided by contractor and commercial field and laboratory analytical operations. The HASQARD serves as the quality basis for all sampling and field/laboratory analytical services provided to DOE-RL through the Analytical Services Program of the Waste Management Division in support of Hanford Site environmental cleanup efforts. This includes work performed by contractor and commercial laboratories and covers radiological and nonradiological analyses. The HASQARD applies to field sampling, field analysis, and research and development activities that support work conducted under the Hanford Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order Tri-Party Agreement and regulatory permit applications and applicable permit requirements described in subsections of this volume. The HASQARD applies to work done to support process chemistry analysis (e.g., ongoing site waste treatment and characterization operations) and research and development projects related to Hanford Site environmental cleanup activities. This ensures a uniform quality umbrella to analytical site activities predicated on the concepts contained in the HASQARD. Using HASQARD will ensure data of known quality and technical defensibility of the methods used to obtain that data. The HASQARD is made up of four volumes: Volume 1, Administrative Requirements; Volume 2, Sampling Technical Requirements; Volume 3, Field Analytical Technical Requirements; and Volume 4, Laboratory Technical Requirements. Volume 1 describes the administrative requirements applicable to each of the other three volumes and is intended to be used in conjunction with the technical volumes.

Abstract Ecology and industry, which have been many times considered as antagonists, are now associated together in the sustainability concept to support the three social / economic / environment pillars. In that way, industrial enterprises and more precisely manufacturing ones seek to integrate environment into their strategy by conducting an innovative rationalization of the production as promoted by industrial ecology and circular economy paradigms. This rationalization is favoring the evolution from product to a Product-Service Systems approach (PSS). The continuity of these services is mainly carried out by the maintenance which is no longer an aftermarket service needed for product (system) functionality but rather an inherent service function of the product (system). Thus this paper aims to investigate the role of maintenance to contribute to the development of these paradigms. It is based first on describing the main features of industrial ecology/circular economy transposing the nature concepts to industrial system. It leads to define key principles and levers to be addressed for the development of industrial ecosystems. Then maintenance activity is globally presented allowing, in a second step, to place maintenance services already existing in line with some of these principles and levers (ex. green maintenance), but also to explore advanced maintenance services more able to support promotion of industrial ecosystem by covering others principles and levers. These advanced services can be built from conventional maintenance processes but integrating sustainability goal (ex. prognostics of energy efficiency) or from innovative processes (ex. regenerative management). Finally scientific issues related to these advanced maintenance services are underlining and should concretize future research directions for researchers/practitioners working on maintenance field.

Any upgrade to utility service provides an opportunity to revisit a Federal building's electrical loads and costs, but it also may provide an economic way to bundle the upgrade with an onsite renewable electricity project during renovation. Upgrading utility service to the site may involve improving or adding a transformer, upgrading utility meters, or otherwise modifying the interconnection equipment or services with the utility. In some cases, the upgrade may change the tariff structure for the facility and may qualify the property for a different structure with lower overall costs. In all cases, the implementation of renewable energy technologies should be identified during the design phase.

Abstract Forested ecosystems have always provided a large suite of services that benefit human civilizations, animals, plants, and other organisms living within the Earthís biosphere. As suggested in earlier chapters, forested ecosystems generate numerous provisioning, regulating, supporting, and cultural services. These services provide the basic building blocks of life on Earth and for human civilizations. Unfortunately, at times humans neither understand nor appreciate the regulating or supporting functions provided by ecosystems. Maintaining the health and well-being of our forested ecosystems can improve human health concerns and protect our homes from unexpected events such as floods and wildfires. Many also argue that healthy ecosystems are the foundation upon which we can build a secure future for our children and grandchildren. Managers of forests and natural resources will undoubtedly face trade-offs among ecosystem services when considering their actions. Even deciding to do nothing at all will involve the analysis of trade-offs, since some of the services provided by ecosystems include the food, shelter, and materials we may use in our normal, daily lives.

This paper presents DynaBot, a domain-specific web service discovery system. The core idea of the DynaBot service discovery system is to use domain-specific service class descriptions powered by an intelligent Deep Web crawler. In contrast to current registry-based service discovery systems--like the several available UDDI registries--DynaBot promotes focused crawling of the Deep Web of services and discovers candidate services that are relevant to the domain of interest. It uses intelligent filtering algorithms to match services found by focused crawling with the domain-specific service class descriptions. We demonstrate the capability of DynaBot through the BLAST service discovery scenario and describe our initial experience with DynaBot.

The Arun field is a giant gas-condensate field operated by Mobil and Pertamina with over 20,000 acres of closure at the top of the Arun reservoir. A middle-shelf patch reef complex of early to middle Miocene age is the producing facies at the Arun field. About 1,100 ft of porous limestones, encased in shales, create a stratigraphic trap for overpressure hydrocarbons. Three main carbonate lithologies were encountered during the examination of over 4,300 ft of core; (1) a reef facies consisting of vuggy, coral encrusting, red-algal boundstones, (2) a near-reef facies consisting of foraminiferal, mixed-skeletal packstones with gravel-size coral fragments, and (3) an interreef lagoonal facies consisting of benthonic-foram packstones. Twenty-two species of corals have been identified from Arun reef facies; major reef-forming coals, listed in order of decreasing abundance, are Porites cf P. Lutes, Cyphastrea microphthalma, Astreopora myriophthalma, Styloconiella gunetheri, Porites solida, and Acropora ssp. The Arun reef is comprised of limestones (with minor amounts of dolomite). No shale beds occur in the sequence, and all carbonate facies are in communication. A pervasive microporosity, occurring throughout the Arun Limestone, results from meteoric alteration of original carbonate mud to form a microrhombic porosity that accounts for about three-fourths of the field's total porosity.

Web services providing weather information are not new. The existing web services working on this kind of fields can provide more prťcised information if the concerned data is collected in a distributed fashion using a sensor network. Longer the lifetime of the sensor network longer is the service provided without interruption. In this paper we propose a web service for providing weather information with a sensor network as the backbone. We have used a Fermat point based forwarding technique to minimize the energy consumption of the sensor network which eventually helps the web service work in an uninterrupted fashion for a longer duration as the life time of the network has prolonged.

Publisher Summary This chapter describes ways of hacking into Google services. It reveals tricks to recover interesting information from Google's vast indexes. AJAX Search API is one of the leading Google services on the AJAX front. This service is meant as a replacement of the older SOAP search service which support was discontinued some time ago. AJAX Search API is considered to be more powerful then the SOAP service and easier to work with. The primary goal of the service is to enable external websites to host Google supplied gadgets which provide searching facilities within or outside of the hosting website and also among video clips, maps, blogs, custom search engines, etc. The Google AJAX Search API is designed to be embedded within external pages. This is described in the study. Following this, it reveals the characteristics of AJAX search, using Firefox as the primary tool of development. Furthermore, it describes the ways of hacking into the AJAX search engine. It also discusses Google calendar, Google's blog search, and subversion version management system. Finally, the study demonstrates that that the search facility is quite fuzzy and queries need to be often refined in order to get better results.
Service Switch Service Switch Jump to: navigation, search Dictionary.png Remote Service Switch A power switch within a smart meter that allows a utility to turn electrical service to a residential customer premise on or off. The switch is remotely operated from the utility using the AMI communications infrastructure. This feature is limited to residential meters providing 200 amp service or less, and allows a utility to quickly switch service without having to roll a service truck. This can be particularly useful for reducing service time and associated costs for establishing or terminating services for move-ins/move-outs, or for switching off service for safety reasons. An extended-service engine coolant filter has been developed, using conventional supplemental coolant additive (SCA) technology. This has been achieved by the use of a proprietary polymer coating, which delays the release of active engine coolant chemistry. Initial field data show a gradual release pattern for introducing SCA chemistry into the coolant, with complete release typically occurring in the range of 70,000 to 140,000 miles (112,651--225,302 km).

We analyse the motivations that led the development of services to support alternative splicing studies. We discuss data modelling issues and illustrate them with the BioInformatics Pipeline for Alternative Splicing Services (BIPASS). We identify the specific needs that an alternative splicing service should address, and compare existing services with respect to a common matrix of functionalities. We conclude with a discussion on future work needed to offer a more complete suite of services.

Distributed energy resources (DER) are quickly making their way to industry primarily as backup generation. They are effective at starting and then producing full-load power within a few seconds. The distribution system is aging and transmission system development has not kept up with the growth in load and generation. The nation's transmission system is stressed with heavy power flows over long distances, and many areas are experiencing problems in providing the power quality needed to satisfy customers. Thus, a new market for DER is beginning to emerge. DER can alleviate the burden on the distribution system by providing ancillary services while providing a cost adjustment for the DER owner. This report describes 10 types of ancillary services that distributed generation (DG) can provide to the distribution system. Of these 10 services the feasibility, control strategy, effectiveness, and cost benefits are all analyzed as in the context of a future utility-power market. In this market, services will be provided at a local level that will benefit the customer, the distribution utility, and the transmission company.

In this article, we examine how security applies to Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Before we discuss security for SOA, lets take a step back and examine what SOA is. SOA is an architectural approach which involves applications being exposed as "services". Originally, services in SOA were associated with a stack of technologies which included SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI. This article addresses the defects of traditional enterprise application integration by combining service oriented-architecture and web service technology. Application integration is then simplified to development and integration of services to tackle connectivity of isomerous enterprise application integration, security, loose coupling between systems and process refactoring and optimization.
Welding onto a pipeline after it has been put into service, a practice commonly referred to as hot tap welding, is frequently required for several reasons. Repair sleeves are installed to reinforce areas of corrosion or mechanical damage, and branch connections are made for system modifications. There are often significant economic incentives to perform this welding without removing the system from service. Operations are maintained during welding and the pipe's contents are not vented into the atmosphere. Due to technological advances in in-service welding, industry needed an update to standards and recommended practices. This year, the American Petroleum Institute (API) hopes to meet that need. The 19th edition of API Standard 1104--Welding of Pipelines and Related Facilities, includes a new appendix that pertains to in-service welding. Appendix B, In-Service Welding, is intended to eventually replace API Recommended Practice 1107--Pipeline Maintenance Welding Practices. API 1107, which was introduced in 1966 and updated in 1987 and 1991, is intended to provide recommended practices for pipeline maintenance welding. The current third edition approached its mandatory five-year review in 1996 by the API-AGA Joint Committee on Oil and Gas Pipeline Field Welding Practices, which also maintains API 1104. The committee saw 11078 needed to reflect the updates that had been made to 1104 as well as the technological advances for in-service welding. To alleviate redundancy between the two documents, and to alleviate lag time between updates, the committee approved a proposal to update and incorporate requirements of API 1107 into an appendix of API 1104. In the meantime, the third edition of API 1107 was reapproved for another five-year review cycle.

One of the prominent techniques in the field of Total Quality Management (TQM) is Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA). FMEA facilitates the recording of failures and analysing them to provide solutions for preventing their recurrence. During the early periods of FMEA evolution, there were two types namely Design FMEA and Process FMEA (PFMEA) in practice. In recent days, more types such as System FMEA, Service FMEA and Maintenance FMEA are being prescribed by the researchers. Meanwhile, a number of benefits of FMEA implementation have been reported. Yet, FMEA has not found its implementation in various fields. One among them is service field. This paper reports the examination of FMEA implementation in service industry. This direction of research led to the design of an improved model, named as 'Modified service FMEA'. Its implementation was examined in an Indian State Government owned passenger Transport Company. Despite certain practical hurdles, this exercise was successful in developing modified service FMEA table and pinpointing the seriousness of failures through the portrayal of Service Lost (SL) and Cost Lost (CL).

In 1982 the Institute of Wood Research manufactured 200 composite wood crossarms (COMARMS) for a field evaluation of their performance in service. Four different types of COMARMS were fabricated using wood flake panels to test how long term load carrying capacity is affected by varying wood furnish, wood preservatives and adhesive system. After placement with utilities in Louisiana, Michigan, New Mexico, Texas and Washington, field inspections were carried out on over 120 COMARMS after 3 years of exposure and 6 years exposure. After 6 years of exposure, most of the COMARMS were removed at random and returned to the Institute for destructive mechanical testing and evaluation. Half of the controls were mechanically tested soon after fabrication, the other half were tested with the exposed COMARMS after six years of inside storage. Tests of insulating performance in weathered and unweathered arms were carried out by Detroit Edison Company. Results of the mechanical tests and field inspections showed a wide variety of performance strongly correlated to the formulation type. Results of the mechanical and electrical testing indicate that performance similar to that observed in the best formulations would be comparable to Douglas-fir crossarms. 24 refs.

Corrosion is an important consideration in the design of a solder joint. It must be addressed with respect to the service environment or, as in the case of soldered conduit, as the nature of the medium being transported within piping or tubing. Galvanic-assisted corrosion is of particular concern, given the fact that solder joints are comprised of different metals or alloy compositions that are in contact with one-another. The (thermodynamic) potential for corrosion to take place in a particular environment requires the availability of the galvanic series for those conditions and which includes the metals or alloys in question. However, the corrosion kinetics, which actually determine the rate of material loss under the specified service conditions, are only available through laboratory evaluations or field data that are found in the existing literature or must be obtained by in-house testing.

Upgrading utility service to the site may involve improving or adding a transformer, upgrading utility meters, or otherwise modifying the interconnection equipment or services with the utility. In some cases, the upgrade may change the tariff structure for the facility and may qualify the property for a different structure with lower overall costs. In all cases, the implementation of renewable energy technologies

As the population of nuclear power plants ages, new defects are appearing in Steam Generators (SG) subjected to particularly sever operational stresses, among them pitting, support plate denting, stress corrosion cracking, fatigue induced cracking, and fretting. Utilities are requiring additional data to characterize defects after their detection, i.e., their depth, length and orientation, in order to optimize any tube plugging decision. In this paper, progress report on CANDU development of FFSG (fitness for service) requirements are provided. Currently, the FFSG program has launched projects into three main fields; viz. specimen testing simulating CANDU SG environment especially regarding fatigue crack initiation, propagation and stress corrosion cracking of I-600, I-800 and M-400 alloys, data compilation and evaluations, criteria document preparation for SG tubing degradation evaluations based on deterministic and probabilistic risk assessment methods. The paper as well discusses the database that is currently being prepared for the PVRC. In the PVRC database information is collected from different worldwide sources in Japan Europe, the US and Canada.

As part of an overall restructuring of the International Atomic Energy Agency's Department of Nuclear Energy, the agency has established the Nuclear Information Section (NIS). The restructuring, recently announced by IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano, also includes the creation of a separate Nuclear Knowledge Management (NKM) Section, as demand for assistance in this area is growing among member countries. According to the NIS Web site, 'This restructuring and the creation of the NIS provides an opportunity for further enhancing existing information products and services and introducing new ones-all with an eye towards advancing higher organizational efficiency and effectiveness.'

Services Services Grid Software and Services Overview Grid computing can include a broad range of technologies. At NERSC we are interested in new computational and data-centric services which enhance the productivity of science teams. The grid infrastructure we support (described below) can be used to manage jobs and data in ways that are otherwise difficult from the comamnd line. Grid services enable remote job management, file transfer and distributed computing workflows through the Globus Toolkit. Web based Science Gateways can be built on the foundation provided by those services. Users can access several NERSC resources via Globus grid interfaces using X509 grid certificates. NERSC is part of the Open Science Grid (OSG) and is available to select OSG Virtual Organizations for compute and storage

The present study explores how modularity makes services visible and how it enables the customers to participate in service co-creation. We review the literature on buying business services to determine the buying challenges and we define service modularity and especially concentrate on defining the attributes of a modular service offering. Theoretical framework describing the connections of the attributes and challenges in service buying is elaborated through a single case study of a modular service in a professional service firm. We argue that a modular service offering can help customers by increasing the visibility of the service offering.

The paper presents findings of the study that explored consumer value creation in various mobile banking services. New electronic channels are replacing the more traditional ones. Mobile devices represent the recent development in electronic service distribution. An exploratory study was conducted on experienced electronic banking customers by using a qualitative in-depth interviewing method. The findings increase the understanding of customer-perceived value and value creation on the basis of attributes of mobile services and customer-perceived disadvantages of mobile phones in electronic banking context. The findings allow practitioners to improve their services and marketing strategies and pass on information to the academics about interesting future research areas.
