Notes on Gauss law applied for time varying electric field in vacuum

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Gauss's law in integral form states that closed surface integral of electric field is proportional to net charge present within the volume bounded by this closed surface. Gauss's law in differential form states that divergence of electric field is proportional to charge's volume density. From Gauss's law it is concluded that in vacuum, where no electric charges are present, divergence of electric field and closed surface integral of electric field are zero. In this paper we make an attempt to theoretically prove that for time-varying electric fields Gauss's law is not valid. In other words, for time-varying electric field even in vacuum divergence of electric field and closed surface integral of electric field are non-zero. We do this by considering simple sinusoidal motion of the charge and then by calculating closed surface integral at specific time of time-varying electric field due to charge motion. Results show that for charges at still and at motion with constant velocity Gauss's law is valid. However f...

A note on the charged boson stars with torsion-coupled field

E-Print Network [OSTI]

Within the framework of the extended teleparallel gravity, a new class of boson stars has recently been constructed by introducing the nonminimal coupling of the scalar field to the torsion scalar. An interesting feature of these static, spherical, self-gravitating configurations of the massive complex scalar field is their central region with outwardly increasing energy density, surrounded by a thick shell within which the joining with the usual asymptotically Schwarzschild tail takes place. In this work we extend the original model with the $U(1)$ gauge field and we find that the combined effect of the charge and coupling of the field to torsion leads to a significant increase of the maximal mass and the particle number that can be supported against gravity. We also show that some charged configurations preserve the property of having the outwardly increasing energy density over the central region, regardless of the fact that charging the configurations affects the anisotropy of the pressures in the opposit...

Notes on analytical study of holographic superconductors with Lifshitz scaling in external magnetic field

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We employ the matching method to analytically investigate the holographic superconductors with Lifshitz scaling in an external magnetic field. We discuss systematically the restricted conditions for the matching method and find that this analytic method is not always powerful to explore the effect of external magnetic field on the holographic superconductors unless the matching point is chosen in an appropriate range and the dynamical exponent $z$ satisfies the relation $z=d-1$ or $z=d-2$. From the analytic treatment, we observe that Lifshitz scaling can hinder the condensation to be formed, which can be used to back up the numerical results. Moreover, we study the effect of Lifshitz scaling on the upper critical magnetic field and reproduce the well-known relation obtained from Ginzburg-Landau theory.

Note: Versatile sample stick for neutron scattering experiments in high electric fields

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

We present a versatile high voltage sample stick that fits into all cryomagnets and standard cryostats at the Swiss Spallation Neutron Source, Paul Scherrer Institut, and which provides a low effort route to neutron scattering experiments that combine electric field with low temperature and magnetic field. The stick allows for voltages up to 5 kV and can be easily adapted for different scattering geometries. We discuss the design consideration and thermal behavior of the stick, and give one example to showcase the abilities of the device.

This note describes a local scheme to characterize and normalize an axial Killing field on a general Riemannian geometry. A Comparison of Techniques for Detecting Abnormal Change in Blogs

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Distributed collections are made of metadata entries that contain references to artifacts not controlled by the collection curators. These collections often have limited forms of change; for digital distributed collections, primarily creation and deletion of additional resources. However, there exists a class of digital collection that undergoes additional kinds of change. These collections consist of resources that are distributed across the Internet and brought together via hyperlinking. Resources in these collections can be expected to change as time goes on. Part of the difficulty in maintaining these collections is determining if a changed page is still a valid member of the collection. Others have tried to address this by defining a maximum allowed threshold of change, however, these methods treat change as a potential problem and treat web content as static despite its intrinsic dynamicism. Instead we acknowledge change on the web as a normal part of a web document and determine the difference between what a maintainer expects a page to do and what it actually does. In this work we evaluate options for extractors and analyzers from a suite of techniques against a human-generated ground-truth set of blog changes. The results of this work show a statistically significant improvement over traditional threshold techniques for our collection.

Enhancing Graduate Student Communication to General Audiences through Blogging about Nanotechnology and Sustainability

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

We have developed and assessed a multiauthor science blog on the topic of nanotechnology and sustainability as a tool to improve the written communication and public engagement skills of graduate students. Focus group studies revealed that after participation in the blog, student authors felt more confident and capable of communicating technical topics to general audiences. Students' research mentors viewed this as an important component of their students' education, as indicated by survey data. Important design aspects of this effort include participation of an editor as well as having flexible content and target-audience guidelines. We have explicitly outlined aspects of the effort we see as critical in order to enable others to replicate this model in related settings.

A note on the foundations of mechanics

E-Print Network [OSTI]

This short note is intended to review the foundations of mechanics, trying to present them with the greatest mathematical and conceptual clarity. It was attempted to remove most of inessential, even parasitic issues, which can hide the true nature of basic principles. The pursuit of that goal results in an improved understanding of some topics such as constrained systems, the nature of time or the relativistic forces. The Sr\\"odinger and Klein-Gordon equations appear as conditions fulfilled by certain types of classical solutions of the field equations although the meaning of quantum equations is not, even remotely, exhausted by these cases. A part of this note comes from previous works.

A Note on Hartle-Hawking Vacua

E-Print Network [OSTI]

The purpose of this note is to establish the basic properties--- regularity at the horizon, time independence, and thermality--- of the generalized Hartle-Hawking vacua defined in static spacetimes with bifurcate Killing horizon admitting a regular Euclidean section. These states, for free or interacting fields, are defined by a path integral on half the Euclidean section. The emphasis is on generality and the arguments are simple but formal.

Lecture notes for criticality safety

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

These lecture notes for criticality safety are prepared for the training of Department of Energy supervisory, project management, and administrative staff. Technical training and basic mathematics are assumed. The notes are designed for a two-day course, taught by two lecturers. Video tapes may be used at the options of the instructors. The notes provide all the materials that are necessary but outside reading will assist in the fullest understanding. The course begins with a nuclear physics overview. The reader is led from the macroscopic world into the microscopic world of atoms and the elementary particles that constitute atoms. The particles, their masses and sizes and properties associated with radioactive decay and fission are introduced along with Einstein's mass-energy equivalence. Radioactive decay, nuclear reactions, radiation penetration, shielding and health-effects are discussed to understand protection in case of a criticality accident. Fission, the fission products, particles and energy released are presented to appreciate the dangers of criticality. Nuclear cross sections are introduced to understand the effectiveness of slow neutrons to produce fission. Chain reactors are presented as an economy; effective use of the neutrons from fission leads to more fission resulting in a power reactor or a criticality excursion. The six-factor formula is presented for managing the neutron budget. This leads to concepts of material and geometric buckling which are used in simple calculations to assure safety from criticality. Experimental measurements and computer code calculations of criticality are discussed. To emphasize the reality, historical criticality accidents are presented in a table with major ones discussed to provide lessons-learned. Finally, standards, NRC guides and regulations, and DOE orders relating to criticality protection are presented.

Notes on Black Hole Fluctuations and Backreaction

E-Print Network [OSTI]

In these notes we prepare the ground for a systematic investigation into the issues of black hole fluctuations and backreaction by discussing the formulation of the problem, commenting on possible advantages and shortcomings of existing works, and introducing our own approach via a stochastic semiclassical theory of gravity based on the Einstein-Langevin equation and the fluctuation-dissipation relation for a self-consistent description of metric fluctuations and dissipative dynamics of the black hole with backreaction of its Hawking radiance.

A note on the product of the conjugates of a polynomial

E-Print Network [OSTI]

The theorem proved in this note, although elementary, is related to a certain misconception. If $K$ is a field, $f\\in K[X]$ is separable and irreducible over $K$, and $g$ is a polynomial dividing $f$, whose coefficients lie in some finite Galois extension of $K$, it may seem natural to assert that the product of the conjugates of $g$ over $K[X]$ is $f$. But this assertion is wrong, except in one particular case. In this note, we make the relation between $K$, $f$, the product of the conjugates of $g$, and the coefficient field of $g$, precise. In particular, it is shown that the product of the conjugates of $g$ over $K[X]$ is equal to $f^n$, with $n\\in \\mathbb N$.

Note On The Maximal Primes Gaps

E-Print Network [OSTI]

This note presents a result on the maximal prime gap of the form p_(n+1) - p_n 0 is a constant, for any arbitrarily small real number e > 0, and all sufficiently large integer n > n_0. Equivalently, the result shows that any short interval [x, x + y], y => C(log x)^(1+e), contains prime numbers for all sufficiently large real numbers x => x_0 unconditionally. An application demonstrates that a prime p => x > 2 can be determined in deterministic polynomial time O(log(x)^8).

Axions: Bose Einstein Condensate or Classical Field?

E-Print Network [OSTI]

The axion is a motivated dark matter candidate, so it would be interesting to find features in Large Scale Structures specific to axion dark matter. Such features were proposed for a Bose Einstein condensate of axions, leading to confusion in the literature (to which I contributed) about whether axions condense due to their gravitational interactions. This note argues that the Bose Einstein condensation of axions is a red herring: the axion dark matter produced by the misalignment mechanism is already a classical field, which has the distinctive features attributed to the axion condensate (BE condensates are described as classical fields). This note also estimates that the rate at which axion particles condense to the field, or the field evaporates to particles, is negligeable.

Cosmological Perturbations with Multiple Scalar Fields

E-Print Network [OSTI]

In this brief note we present a set of equations describing the evolution of perturbed scalar fields in a cosmological spacetime with multiple scalar fields. We take into account of the simultaneously excited full metric perturbations in the context of the uniform-curvature gauge which is known to be the best choice. The equations presented in a compact form will be useful for handling the structure formation processes under the multiple episodes of inflation.
