Facebook: Threats to Privacy

E-Print Network (OSTI)

End-users share a wide variety of information on Facebook, but a discussion of the privacy implications of doing so has yet to emerge. We examined how Facebook affects privacy, and found serious flaws in the system. Privacy on Facebook is undermined by three principal factors: users disclose too much, Facebook does not take adequate steps to protect user privacy, and third parties are actively seeking out end-user information using Facebook. We based our end-user findings on a survey of MIT students and statistical analysis of Facebook data from MIT, Harvard, NYU, and the University of Oklahoma. We analyzed the Facebook system in terms of Fair Information Practices as recommended by the Federal Trade Commission. In light of the information available and the system that protects it, we used a threat model to analyze specific privacy risks. Specifically, university administrators are using Facebook for disciplinary purposes, firms are using it for marketing purposes, and intruders are exploiting security holes. For each threat, we analyze the efficacy of the current protection, and where solutions are inadequate, we make recommendations on how to address the issue.

Finding a Needle in Haystack: Facebook’s Photo Storage

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Abstract: This paper describes Haystack, an object storage system optimized for Facebook’s Photos application. Facebook currently stores over 260 billion images, which translates to over 20 petabytes of data. Users upload one billion new photos (?60 terabytes) each week and Facebook serves over one million images per second at peak. Haystack provides a less expensive and higher performing solution than our previous approach, which leveraged network attached storage appliances over NFS. Our key observation is that this traditional design incurs an excessive number of disk operations because of metadata lookups. We carefully reduce this per photo metadata so that Haystack storage machines can perform all metadata lookups in main memory. This choice conserves disk operations for reading actual data and thus increases overall throughput. 1

An investigation into Facebook friend grouping

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Abstract. With increasingly large friend networks, Facebook users may be losing sight of exactly with whom they are sharing content they post to Facebook. When Facebook released a new privacy interface in summer 2010 they simplified privacy controls; however, group-based permissions remain at the core of fine-grained privacy control. In order to use these fine-grained controls, users must be able to accurately and usefully specify friend groups. In a series of 46 semi-structured interviews, we investigated how participants group their online friends using four different grouping methods. Our results show that these different mechanisms alter the strategies and groups that users create, that groups created a priori need further refinement before they can adequately address privacy decisions, and that users are adapting their online behavior to avoid the need to specify groups in the current Facebook interface. We conclude with several recommendations that would allow users improved group-based access control.

Network-level footprints of Facebook applications

E-Print Network (OSTI)

With over half a billion users, Online Social Networks (OSNs) are the major new applications on the Internet. Little information is available on the network impact of OSNs, although there is every expectation that the volume and diversity of traffic due to OSNs is set to explode. In this paper, we examine the specific role played by a key component of OSNs: the extremely popular and widespread set of third-party applications on some of the most popular OSNs. With over 81,000 third-party applications on Facebook alone, their impact is hard to predict and even harder to study. We have developed and launched a number of Facebook applications, all of which are among the most popular applications on Facebook in active use by several million users monthly. Through our applications, we are able to gather, analyze, correlate, and report their workload characteristics and performance from the perspective of the application servers. Coupled with PlanetLab experiments, where active probes are sent through Facebook to access a set of diverse applications, we are able to study how Facebook forwarding/processing of requests/responses impacts the overall delay performance perceived by end-users. These insights help provide guidelines for OSNs and application developers. We have also made the data studied here publicly available to the research community. This is the first and only known study of popular thirdparty applications on OSNs at this depth.

Incentives for Quality over Time – The Case of Facebook Applications

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We study the market for applications on Facebook, the dominant platform for social networking and make use of a rule change by Facebook by which high-quality applications were rewarded with further opportunities to engage users. We find that the change led to quality being a more important driver of usage while sheer network size became less important. Further, we find that update frequency helps applications maintain higher usage, while generally usage of Facebook applications declines less rapidly with age.

PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR ARTICLEAn education in Facebook

E-Print Network (OSTI)

For some years academics have debated the role in higher education of Facebook, the world’s most extensive social networking site. At first there was enthusiasm—it was a new tool that could be ‘repurposed ’ for education; then, as Facebook became more widespread, its use seemed less than opportune. But now, with so many students already engaged before they even come to a university, perhaps it is impossible to avoid the conclusion that Facebook is as natural to education as the commute, the computer, and everything else which students ‘bring’. This paper first presents a summary of what Facebook affords, by way of its design and use, for online communication and networking, demonstrating the central role of reciprocal acts of attention exchange in this system. It then analyses, through a critical reading of research into Facebook and education, the way Facebook challenges traditional understandings of university education and the relationships between teachers and students. It concludes that, however we might seek to use Facebook in higher education (and there are many reasons we might), its use will always be shaped by—and indeed give rise to—a blurring of the traditional boundaries between formal and informal education.

Friends Only: Examining a Privacy-Enhancing Behavior in Facebook

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Privacy practices in social network sites often appear paradoxical, as content-sharing behavior stands in conflict with the need to reduce disclosure-related harms. In this study we explore privacy in social network sites as a contextual information practice, managed by a process of boundary regulation. Drawing on a sample survey of undergraduate Facebook users, we examine a particular privacy-enhancing practice: having a friends-only Facebook profile. Particularly, we look at the association between network composition, expectancy violations, interpersonal privacy practices and having a friends-only profile. We find that expectancy violations by weak ties and increased levels of interpersonal privacy management are positively associated with having a friends-only profile. We conclude with a discussion of how these findings may be integrated into the design of systems to facilitate interaction while enhancing individual privacy. Intelligent content-based privacy assistant for facebook

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Abstract—Although most online social networks now offer fine-grained controls of information sharing, these are rarely used, both because their use imposes additional burden on the user and because there are too many control settings for an average user to handle. To mitigate this problem, we have developed an Intelligent Privacy Assistant for Facebook that partially automates the assignment of sharing permissions, taking into account the content of the information published and user’s high-level sharing policies. The Assistant uses a novel social web privacy language, employs named entity recognition algorithms to annotate sensitive parts of published information and an answer set programming system to evaluate user’s privacy policies and determine the list of safe recipients. On a test scenario, the Assistant reached 73.8 % and 95.2 % performance in correctly determining safe and unsafe recipients, respectively. Analyzing Facebook privacy settings: User expectations vs. reality

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The sharing of personal data has emerged as a popular activity over online social networking sites like Facebook. As a result, the issue of online social network privacy has received significant attention in both the research literature and the mainstream media. Our overarching goal is to improve defaults and provide better tools for managing privacy, but we are limited by the fact that the full extent of the privacy problem remains unknown; there is little quantification of the incidence of incorrect privacy settings or the difficulty users face when managing their privacy. In this paper, we focus on measuring the disparity between the desired and actual privacy settings, quantifying the magnitude of the problem of managing privacy. We deploy a survey, implemented as a Facebook application, to 200 Facebook users recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk. We find that 36 % of content remains shared with the default privacy settings. We also find that, overall, privacy settings match users ’ expectations only 37 % of the time, and when incorrect, almost always expose content to more users than expected. Finally, we explore how our results have potential to assist users in selecting appropriate privacy settings by examining the user-created friend lists. We find that these have significant correlation with the social network, suggesting that information from the social network may be helpful in implementing new tools for managing privacy.

LASSIE: Libraries and Social Software in Education Case Study 5:Libraries and Facebook

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Page 1This case study explores the use of the social networking site Facebook (www.facebook.com) as a tool for libraries and librarians. The case study was launched some way into the project following the growth and popularity of this social networking site. Many librarians have now joined Facebook for purely social reasons, however it can overlap into the professional world as it is being used by several professional library groups and for promoting library related events. Facebook also has a number of library related tools which the project team felt were worthy of further exploration. This case study is slightly different to the four other case studies, because we did not set up a specific library-related initiative in Facebook for use with librarians or distance learners. The case study is largely based on the literature and our own experiences of using Facebook. The reasons for this approach were twofold: partly because the use of Facebook accelerated phenomenally during the period when we were undertaking our research (March 2007 – January 2008). Early on in the project and at the time of planning the case studies we could not have anticipated the level of interest that developed in this social networking site. This was specifically a UK-based phenomena and largely driven by the extensive coverage that the site received in the mainstream media during the summer of 2007. It also did not seem appropriate to set up a project-related initiative in Facebook for real

A privacy preservation model for Facebook-style social network systems

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Recent years have seen unprecedented growth in the popularity of social network systems, with Facebook being an archetypical example. The access control paradigm behind the privacy preservation mechanism of Facebook is distinctly different from such existing access control paradigms as Discretionary Access Control, Role-Based Access Control, Capability Systems, and Trust Management Systems. This work takes a first step in deepening the understanding of this access control paradigm, by proposing an access control model that formalizes and generalizes the privacy preservation mechanism of Facebook. The model can be instantiated into a family of Facebook-style social network systems, each with a recognizably different access control mechanism, so that Facebook is but one instantiation of the model. We also demonstrate that the model can be instantiated to express policies that are not currently supported by Facebook but possess rich and natural social significance. This work thus delineates the design space of privacy preservation mechanisms for Facebook-style social network systems, and lays out a formal framework for policy analysis in these systems.

Crossing boundaries: Identity management and student/faculty relationships on the Facebook. Poster presented at CSCW

E-Print Network (OSTI)

This poster describes preliminary results from an ongoing investigation of student/faculty relationships in the online community Facebook. In spring of 2006, a survey was conducted in two large courses at a mid-sized public research university to understand how contact on Facebook was influencing student perceptions of faculty. We found that contact on Facebook had no impact on students ’ ratings of professors. We found it striking that one third of the students we surveyed did not believe that faculty should be present on the Facebook at all. Some raised concerns about identity management and privacy issues. We discuss the implications of these findings and the potential for further research in the area.

Understanding Motivations for Facebook Use: Usage Metrics, Network Structure, and Privacy

E-Print Network (OSTI)

This study explores the links between motives for using a social network service and numerical measures of that activity. Specifically, it identified motives for Facebook use by employing a Uses and Gratifications (U&G) approach and then investigated the extent to which these motives can be predicted through usage and network metrics collected automatically via the Facebook API. In total, 11 Facebook usage metrics and eight personal network metrics served as predictors. Results showed that all three variable types in this expanded U&G frame of analysis (covering social antecedents, usage metrics, and personal network metrics) effectively predicted motives and highlighted interesting behaviors. To further illustrate the power of this framework, the intricate nature of privacy in social media was explored and relationships drawn between privacy attitudes (and acts) and measures of use and network structure. Author Keywords Uses and gratifications; social network sites; social networks; Facebook; privacy; computer-mediated communication.

Third-party Apps on Facebook: Privacy and the Illusion of Control

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Little research examines the privacy threats associated with the use of third-party apps on Facebook. To address this gap in the literature, we systematically study third-party apps ' current practices for privacy notice and consent by: i) collecting data from the 1800 most popular Facebook apps to record their data collection practices concerning users and their friends, and ii) developing our own Facebook app to conduct a number of tests to identify problems that exist in the current design of authentication dialogs for third-party apps on Facebook. To address these problems, we propose two new interface designs for third-party apps ’ authentication dialogs to: i) increase user control of apps' data access and restrict apps ' publishing ability during the process of adding them to users ’ profiles, and ii) alert users when their global privacy settings on Facebook are violated by apps. This research provides both conceptual and empirical insights in terms of design recommendations to address privacy concerns toward third-party apps on Facebook.

A Privacy Preservation Model for Facebook-Like Social Network Systems

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Recent years have seen unprecedented growth in the popularity of social network systems, with Facebook being an archetypical example. Due to the distributed nature of access control in Facebook-style social network systems, it is difficult for a user to anticipate the privacy consequence of such actions as modifying a privacy setting or befriending another user. This work takes a first step in addressing this challenge, by proposing an access control model that formalizes and generalizes the privacy preservation mechanism of Facebook. The model can be instantiated into a family of Facebook-style social network systems, each with a recognizably different access control mechanism, so that Facebook is but one instantiation of the model. We also demonstrate that the model can be instantiated to express policies that, on the one hand, are not currently supported by Facebook, but on the other hand possess rich and natural social significance. This work thus deepens our understanding of the design space of privacy preservation mechanisms for social network systems, and lays out a formal framework for policy analysis in these systems.

A walk in facebook: Uniform sampling of users in online social networks. Arxiv preprint arXiv:0906.0060

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The popularity of online social networks (OSNs) has given rise to a number of measurements studies that provide a first step towards their understanding. So far, such studies have been based either on complete data sets provided directly by the OSN itself or on Breadth-First-Search (BFS) crawling of the social graph, which does not guarantee good statistical properties of the collected sample. In this paper, we crawl the publicly available social graph and present the first unbiased sampling of Facebook (FB) users using a Metropolis-Hastings random walk with multiple chains. We study the convergence properties of the walk and demonstrate the uniformity of the collected sample with respect to multiple metrics of interest. We provide a comparison of our crawling technique to baseline algorithms, namely BFS and simple random walk, as well as to the “ground truth ” obtained through truly uniform sampling of userIDs. Our contributions lie both in the measurement methodology and in the collected sample. With regards to the methodology, our measurement technique (i) applies and combines known results from random walk sampling specifically in the OSN context and (ii) addresses system implementation aspects that have made the measurement of Facebook challenging so far. With respect to the collected sample: (i) it is the first representative sample of FB users and we plan to make it publicly available; (ii) we perform a characterization of several key properties of the data set, and find that some of them are substantially different from what was previously believed based on non-representative OSN samples. 1.

American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education 2009; 73 (6) Article 104. RESEARCH ARTICLES Pharmacy Students ’ Facebook Activity and Opinions Regarding Accountability and E-Professionalism

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Objective. To assess pharmacy students ’ Facebook activity and opinions regarding accountability and e-professionalism and determine effects of an e-professionalism education session on pharmacy students’ posting behavior. Methods. A 21-item questionnaire was developed, pilot-tested, revised, and administered to 299 pharmacy students at 3 colleges of pharmacy. Following a presentation regarding potential e-professionalism issues with Facebook, pharmacy students with existing profiles answered an additional question concerning changes in online posting behavior. Results. Incoming first-year pharmacy students ’ Facebook usage is consistent with that of the general college student population. Male students are opposed to authority figures ’ use of Facebook for character and professionalism judgments and are more likely to present information they would not want faculty members, future employers, or patients to see. More than half of the pharmacy students planned to make changes to their online posting behavior as a result of the e-professionalism presentation. Conclusions. There is high social media usage among pharmacy students and many do not fully comprehend the issues that arise from being overly transparent in online settings. Attitudes toward accountability for information supplied via social networking emphasize the need for e-professionalism training of incoming pharmacy students.

External vs. body temperature

NLE Websites -- All DOE Office Websites (Extended Search)

External vs. body temperature External vs. body temperature Name: jacqui Location: N/A Country: N/A Date: N/A Question: If one's internal body temperature is approximately 98.6, WHY when the external temperature is 98.6 do we feel hot? Since both temperatures are "balanced", shouldn't we feel comfortable? I am assuming here that humidity levels are controlled, and play no factor in the external temperature. Replies: First of all, skin temperature is lower than 98.6F; 98.6F is internal body temperature, so air at 98.6F is hotter than skin. But more important, it is the nervous system, and the cells in your skin that your brain uses to detect temperature that determine whether you "feel" hot or not, not whether the air is hotter than your skin. These are set so that you feel hot when the air is actually colder than your skin. Why? They are probably set to make you feel hot whenever the air is warm enough so that your body has some trouble getting rid of the excess heat it produces through metabolism. This insures that you take some actions to help your body cool off. Like drinking cool water, or reducing exercise

External split field generator

DOE Patents (OSTI)

A generator includes a coil disposed about a core. A first stationary magnetic field source may be disposed on a first end portion of the core and a second stationary magnetic field source may be disposed on a second end portion of core. The first and second stationary magnetic field sources apply a stationary magnetic field to the coil. An external magnetic field source may be disposed outside the coil to apply a moving magnetic field to the coil. Electrical energy is generated in response to an interaction between the coil, the moving magnetic field, and the stationary magnetic field.

Technical Review of Externalities Issues

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

Externalities, once a term known only to students of economics, has become the catchword for a major experiment in electric utility regulation. It is very important for utilities and policy makers to understand the technical issues and arguments driving the externality experiment. This experiment has important implications for utility costs, competitive positions, environmental quality, and future regulations.

The scientific need and the priorities for acquiring, processing and archiving the external data-streams are established by the science working groups and considers such factors as: Availability and accessibility in other archives Acquisition cost Ease of use of the native data-format If this analysis determines that significant value to the ARM data users will be added, the XDC will develop an automated process to acquire the data from the data provider, and reformat the data as necessary into an ARM-compatible data format. The processed data and the native format data are sent to the ARM permanent archive at ORNL.

Methods of valuing environmental externalities

SciTech Connect

Estimating a monetary value for environmental externalities provides an approximation of the societal value of reducing impacts on human health and the environment from electrical energy supply. This method can be used for comparison of resources, including utility and nonutility generation, demand-side management and off-system power purchases. A dollar estimate of the full societal cost of the supply option is established by placing a value on its air, water and terrestrial effects and adding these costs to the option's capital, operating and maintenance costs. This article provides a rationale for monetizing externalities and addresses the strengths and weaknesses of four techniques for monetizing, with examples of the application of each method. The authors preferred technique for incorporating externalities into utility planning in the near term - implied valuation through the estimation of the marginal cost of abatement - is discussed in detail. 2 tabs.

Overlap Fermion in External Gravity

E-Print Network (OSTI)

On a lattice, we construct an overlap Dirac operator which describes the propagation of a Dirac fermion in external gravity. The local Lorentz symmetry is manifestly realized as a lattice gauge symmetry, while the general coordinate invariance is expected to be restored only in the continuum limit. External costs of intercity truck freight transportation

E-Print Network (OSTI)

From a societal perspective, it is desirable for all transportation users to pay their full social (private and external) costs. We estimate four general types of external costs for intercity freight trucking and compare them with the private costs incurred by carriers. Estimated external costs include: accidents (fatalities, injuries, and property damage); emissions (air pollution and greenhouse gases); noise; and unrecovered costs associated with the provision, operation, and maintenance of public facilities. The analysis reveals that external costs are equal to 13.2 % of private costs and user fees would need to be increased about

Use of Automated External Defibrillators

SciTech Connect

In an effort to improve survival from cardiac arrest, the American Heart Association (AHA) has promoted the Chain of Survival concept, describing a sequence of prehospital steps that result in improved survival after sudden cardiac arrest. These interventions include immediate deployment of emergency medical services, prompt cardiopulmonary resuscitation, early defibrillation when indicated, and early initiation of advanced medical care. Early defibrillation has emerged as the most important intervention with survival decreasing by 10% with each minute of delay in defibrillation. Ventricular Fibrillation (VF) is a condition in which there is uncoordinated contraction of the heart cardiac muscle of the ventricles in the heart, making them tremble rather than contract properly. VF is a medical emergency and if the arrhythmia continues for more than a few seconds, blood circulation will cease, and death can occur in a matter of minutes. During VF, contractions of the heart are not synchronized, blood flow ceases, organs begin to fail from oxygen deprivation and within 10 minutes, death will occur. When VF occurs, the victim must be defibrillated in order to establish the heart’s normal rhythm. On average, the wait for an ambulance in populated areas of the United States is about 11 minutes. In view of these facts, the EFCOG Electrical Safety Task Group initiated this review to evaluate the potential value of deployment and use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for treatment of SCA victims. This evaluation indicates the long term survival benefit to victims of SCA is high if treated with CPR plus defibrillation within the first 3-5 minutes after collapse. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), survival rates as high as 74% are possible if treatment and defibrillation is performed in the first 3 minutes. In contrast survival rates are only 5% where no AED programs have been established to provide prompt CPR and defibrillation. ["CPR statistics" American Heart Association] Early intervention with both CPR and defibrillation can result in high long-term survival rates for SCA, as demonstrated by a study investigating the beneficial effects of AED devices at Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway airports. The American Medical Association (AMA) advocates the widespread placement of AEDs [AMA Res. 413, A-02; Res. 424, A-04]; supports increasing government and industry funding for the purchase of AED devices; and encourages the American public to become trained in CPR and the use of AEDs. Some states, including Maryland, have enacted legislation requiring AED devices and a certified responder be available at high school and school-sponsored athletic events due the risk of SCA to athletes (the most common cause of death in young athletes). Ensuring AED availability at Department of Energy (DOE) sites would serve as a means of preventative intervention for over 14,000 DOE employees and 193,000 contract workers. It is estimated 1 per 1,000 adults 35 years of age and older will experience SCA in a given year.

On Color Superconductivity in External Magnetic Field

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We study color superconductivity in external magnetic field. We discuss the reason why the mixing angles in color-flavor locked (CFL) and two-flavor superconductivity (2SC) phases are different despite the fact that the CFL gap goes to the 2SC gap for $m_s \\to \\infty$. Although flavor symmetry is explicitly broken in external magnetic field, we show that all values of gaps in their coset spaces of possible solutions in the CFL phase are equivalent in external magnetic field.

Proceedings: National conference on environmental externalities

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

This report is the proceedings of the National Conference on Environmental Externalities. A environmental externality is the environmental impact of a process or a plant that society must endure. It is a social cost and is paid, but not by the company who produced it or the company`s customers who endure it. The main purpose of this report is to gather the many designs and ideas of how and why to internalize the externalities into the pricing systems of the public utility commissions, especially that of the electric utilities. Economic and sociological aspects of the internalization of these externalities are given in these proceedings. Individual papers are processed separately for databases. (MB)

External Costs of Energy Technologies Position Statement

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The American Nuclear Society believes that decisions concerning national energy policy should appropriately take external costs into account. In some energy options, external costs are not included in the cost of the energy produced; instead, they are borne by parties not involved in the original transaction, generally without consent or due compensation. External costs 1 may be related to many factors, including impacts on public health, environmental impacts, degradation of quality of life, degradation of agricultural land, depletion of natural resources, and reduction in security. These costs are incurred at various stages of the life cycle of an energy technology. While some energy technologies may appear to have smaller environmental impacts than others, their external costs may be significant when the complete life cycle costs are taken into account. Particularly, an energy source that is inherently intermittent will require, for applications demanding reliable performance, either a backup energy supply or an energy storage facility, whose external costs are not negligible. On the other hand, practically all the costs to make nuclear power technology safe and secure, including the costs of waste management and disposal, are already incorporated into the cost of electricity generation. 2 Appropriately accounting for external costs should be an essential element in energy policy since in doing so, the final product is compared based on a consistent set of parameters for all technologies, and the resulting mix of energy sources will more appropriately balance the competing economic, environmental, and social needs from energy production and consumption.

Cold neutrons trapped in external fields

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The properties of inhomogeneous neutron matter are crucial to the physics of neutron-rich nuclei and the crust of neutron stars. Advances in computational techniques now allow us to accurately determine the binding energies and densities of many neutrons interacting via realistic microscopic interactions and confined in external fields. We perform calculations for different external fields and across several shells to place important constraints on inhomogeneous neutron matter, and hence the large isospin limit of the nuclear energy density functionals that are used to predict properties of heavy nuclei and neutron star crusts. We find important differences between microscopic calculations and current density functionals; in particular the isovector gradient terms are significantly more repulsive than in traditional models, and the spin-orbit and pairing forces are comparatively weaker.

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We analyze the welfare properties of the competitive equilibrium in a capital accumulation model where individual preferences are subject to both habit formation and consumption spillovers. Using an additive specification for preferences, according to which the argument in the utility function is a linear combination of present and past values of own consumption and consumption spillovers, we analyze the circumstances under which these spillovers are a source of inefficiency. It is shown that consumption externalities have to interact with habits in order to generate an inefficient dynamic equilibrium. Finally, we characterize optimal tax policies aimed at restoring efficient decentralized paths.

Past experiences with automotive external combustion engines

SciTech Connect

GMR (General Motors Research Laboratories, now GM R and D Center) has a history of improving the internal combustion engine, especially as it relates to automotive use. During the quarter century from 1950--75, considerable effort was devoted to evaluating alternative powerplants based on thermodynamic cycles different from those on which the established spark-ignition and diesel engines are founded. Two of these, the steam engine and the Stirling engine, incorporated external combustion. Research on those two alternatives is reviewed. Both were judged to fall short of current needs for commercial success as prime movers for conventional automotive vehicles.

Identification of External Hazards for Analysis in Probabilistic Risk Assessment

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

This document reports on the assessment of current practices related to the identification of external events (hazards) that can potentially affect the safety of nuclear power plants and provides recommendations on the screening criteria used to perform this identification process. The identification process is intended for use by individual plants, and the identified external events are appropriate candidates for evaluation using probabilistic risk assessment (PRA). One of the outcomes of an external ev...

External combustor for gas turbine engine

DOE Patents (OSTI)

An external combustor for a gas turbine engine has a cyclonic combustion chamber into which combustible gas with entrained solids is introduced through an inlet port in a primary spiral swirl. A metal draft sleeve for conducting a hot gas discharge stream from the cyclonic combustion chamber is mounted on a circular end wall of the latter adjacent the combustible gas inlet. The draft sleeve is mounted concentrically in a cylindrical passage and cooperates with the passage in defining an annulus around the draft sleeve which is open to the cyclonic combustion chamber and which is connected to a source of secondary air. Secondary air issues from the annulus into the cyclonic combustion chamber at a velocity of three to five times the velocity of the combustible gas at the inlet port. The secondary air defines a hollow cylindrical extension of the draft sleeve and persists in the cyclonic combustion chamber a distance of about three to five times the diameter of the draft sleeve. The hollow cylindrical extension shields the drive sleeve from the inlet port to prevent discharge of combustible gas through the draft sleeve.
