Static axisymmetric thin-shell wormholes are constructed within the framework of the Brans-Dicke scalar-tensor theory of gravity. Examples of wormholes associated with vacuum and electromagnetic fields are studied. All constructions must be threaded by exotic matter, except in the case of geometries with a singularity of finite radius, associated with an electric field, which can have a throat supported by ordinary matter. These results are achieved with any of the two definitions of the flare-out condition considered.

We study the accelerated expansion of the universe by exploring the Brans-Dicke parameter in different eras. For this, we take the FRW universe model with a viscous fluid (without potential) and the Bianchi type-I universe model with a barotropic fluid (with and without a potential). We evaluate the deceleration parameter and the Brans-Dicke parameter to explore cosmic acceleration. It is concluded that accelerated expansion of the universe can also be achieved for higher values of the Brans-Dicke parameter in some cases.

The Dicke model describes N two-level atoms interacting with a single-mode bosonic field and exhibits a second-order phase transition from the normal to the superradiant phase. The energy levels are not degenerate in the normal phase but have degeneracy in the superradiant phase, where quantum tunneling occurs. By means of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and the instanton method in quantum field theory, the tunneling splitting, inversely proportional to the tunneling rate for the adiabatic Dicke model, in the superradiant phase can be evaluated explicitly. It is shown that the tunneling splitting vanishes as exp(-N) for large N, whereas for small N it disappears as {radical}(N)/exp(N). The dependence of the tunneling splitting on the relevant parameters, especially on the atom-field coupling strength, is also discussed.

The gravitational fields of vacuumless global and gauge strings have been studied in Brans-Dicke theory under the weak field assumption of the field equations. It has been shown that both global and gauge string can have repulsive as well as attractive gravitational effect in Brans-Dicke theory which is not so in General Relativity.

The American physicist Robert Dicke (1916-1997) is primarily known for his important contributions to gravitation, cosmology, and microwave physics. Much less known is his work in geophysics and related areas of the earth sciences in which he engaged himself and several of his collaborators in the period from about 1957 to 1969. Much of Dicke's work in geophysics was motivated by his wish to obtain evidence in support of the non-Einstenian Brans-Dicke theory of gravitation. The idea of a decreasing gravitational constant, as entertained by Dicke and some other physicists (including Pascual Jordan), played some role in the process that transformed the static picture of the Earth to a dynamical picture. It is not by accident that Dicke appears as a minor actor in histories of the plate tectonic revolution in the 1960s.

Dicke narrowing is a phenomena that dramatically reduces the Doppler width of spectral lines, due to frequent velocity-changing collisions. A similar phenomena occurs for electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonances, and facilitates ultra-narrow spectral features in room-temperature vapor. We directly measure the Dicke-like narrowing by studying EIT line-shapes as a function of the angle between the pump and the probe beams. The measurements are in good agreement with an analytic theory with no fit parameters. The results show that Dicke narrowing can increase substantially the tolerance of hot-vapor EIT to angular deviations. We demonstrate the importance of this effect for applications such as imaging and spatial solitons using a single-shot imaging experiment, and discuss the implications on the feasibility of storing images in atomic vapor.

Gravitational field of a nonstatic global string has been studied in the context of Brans-Dicke theory of gravity. Both the metric components and the BD scalar field are assumed to be nonseparable functions of time and space. The spacetime may or may not have any singularity at a finite distance from the string core but the singularity at a particular time always remains. It has been shown that the spacetime exhibits both outgoing and incoming gravitational radiation.

A recent investigation shows that a local gauge string with a phenomenological energy momentum tensor, as prescribed by Vilenkin, is inconsistent in Brans-Dicke theory. In this work, it has been shown that such a string is indeed consistent if one introduces time dependences in the metric. A set of solutions of full nonlinear Einstein's equations for the interior region of such a string are presented.

In the present work, the gravitational field of superconducting cosmic string has been investigated in the context of Brans-Dicke theory of gravity. We have presented two kind of solutions for the spacetime in the far field zone of the string. When the B-D scalar field is switched off, one of the solutions reduces to the solution earlier obtained by Moss and Poletti in General Relativity.

A holographic dark energy from Ricci scalar curvature called Ricci dark energy was proposed recently. In this model the future event horizon area is replaced by the inverse of the Ricci scalar curvature. We study the evolution of equation of state of the Ricci dark energy and the transition from decelerated to accelerated expansion of the universe in the Brans-Dicke theory, which is a natural extension of general relativity. We find that the current acceleration of our universe is well explained.

The definition of the Sparling-Thirring form is extended to the Brans-Dicke theory. By writing the Brans-Dicke field equations in a formally Maxwell-like form, a superpotential and a corresponding pseudo energy-momentum form are defined. The general energy expression provided by the superpotential in the Jordan frame is discussed in relation to the corresponding expression in the Einstein frame. In order to substantiate its formal definition, the generalized Sparling-Thirring form is used to calculate the energy for the spherically symmetric vacuum solution in the Brans-Dicke theory.

We develop a formalism for calculating cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization anisotropies in cosmological models with Brans-Dicke gravity. We then modify publicly available Boltzmann codes to calculate numerically the temperature and polarization power spectra. Results are illustrated with a few representative models. Comparing with the general-relativistic model with the same cosmological parameters, both the amplitude and the width of the acoustic peaks are different in the Brans-Dicke models. We use a covariance-matrix calculation to investigate whether the effects of Brans-Dicke gravity are degenerate with those of variation in other cosmological parameters and to simultaneously determine whether forthcoming CMB maps might be able to distinguish Brans-Dicke and general-relativistic cosmology. Although the predicted power spectra for plausible Brans-Dicke models differ from those in general relativity only slightly, we find that MAP and/or the Planck Surveyor may in principle provide a test of Brans-Dicke theory that is competitive to solar-system tests. For example, if all other parameters except for the CMB normalization are fixed, a value of the Brans-Dicke parameter omega as large as 500 could be identified with MAP, and for Planck, values as large as omega \\simeq3000 could be identified; these sensitivities are decreased roughly by a factor of 3 if we marginalize over the baryon density, Hubble constant, spectral index, and reionization optical depth. In more general scalar-tensor theories, omega may evolve with time, and in this case, the CMB probe would be complementary to that from solar-system tests.

We consider the ADM formalism of the Brans-Dicke theory and propose an anisotropic extension of the theory by introducing five free parameters. We find that the resulting theory reveals many interesting aspects which are not present in the original BD theory. We first discuss the ghost instability and strong coupling problems which are present in the gravity theory without the full diffeomorphism symmetry and show that they can be avoided in a region of the parameter space. We also perform the post-Newtonian approximation and show that the constraint of the Brans-Dicke parameter $\\omega_{{\\rm BD}}$ being large to be consistent with the solar system observations could be evaded in the extended theory. We also discuss that accelerating Universe can be achieved without the need of the potential for the Brans-Dicke scalar.

The post Newtonian parameter is considered in the chameleon-Brans-Dicke model. In the first step, the general form of this parameter and also effective gravitational constant is obtained. An arbitrary function for f({Phi}), which indicates the coupling between matter and scalar field, is introduced to investigate validity of solar system constraint. It is shown that the chameleon-Brans-Dicke model can satisfy the solar system constraint and gives us an {omega} parameter of order 10{sup 4}, which is in comparable to the constraint which has been indicated in [19].

The quantum phase transition of the Dicke-model from the normal to the superradiant phase corresponds to the self-organization of atoms from the homogeneous into a periodically patterned distribution above a critical driving strength. The fragility of the ground state due to photon measurement induced back action is calculated.

The generalized Szekeres family of solution for quasi-spherical space-time of higher dimensions are obtained in the scalar tensor theory of gravitation. Brans-Dicke field equations expressed in Dicke's revised units are exhaustively solved for all the subfamilies of the said family. A particular group of solutions may also be interpreted as due to the presence of the so-called C-field of Hoyle and Narlikar and for a chosen sign of the coupling parameter. The models show either expansion from a big bang type of singularity or a collapse with the turning point at a lower bound. There is one particular case which starts from the big bang, reaches a maximum and collapses with the in course of time to a crunch.

Machian solutions of which the scalar field exhibits the asymptotic behavior $\\phi =O(\\rho /\\omega)$ are generally explored for the homogeneous and isotropic universe in the Brans-Dicke theory. It is shown that the Machian solution is unique for the closed and the open space. Such a solution is restricted to one that satisfies the relation $GM/c^{2}a=const$, which is fixed to $\\pi $ in the theory for the closed model. Another type of solution satisfying $\\phi =O(\\rho /\\omega)$ with the arbitrary coupling constant $% \\omega $ is obtained for the flat space. This solution has the scalar field $% \\phi \\propto \\rho t^{2}$ and also keeps the relation $GM/c^{2}R=const$ all the time. This Machian relation and the asymptotic behavior $\\phi =O(\\rho /\\omega)$ is equivalent to each other in the Brans-Dicke theory.

We consider a gas of ultracold two-level atoms confined in a cavity, taking into account for atomic center-of-mass motion and cavity mode variations. We use the generalized Dicke model, and analyze separately the cases of a Gaussian, and a standing wave mode shape. Owing to the interplay between external motional energies of the atoms and internal atomic and field energies, the phase-diagrams exhibit novel features not encountered in the standard Dicke model, such as the existence of first and second order phase transitions between normal and superradiant phases. Due to the quantum description of atomic motion, internal and external atomic degrees of freedom are highly correlated leading to modified normal and superradiant phases.

For this purpose, we use perturbation approach in the modified field equations as well as dynamical equations and construct a collapse equation. The collapse equation with adiabatic index ($\\Gamma$) is used to explore the instability ranges of both isotropic as well as anisotropic fluid in Newtonian and post-Newtonian approximations. It turns out that the instability ranges depend on the dynamical variables of collapsing fluid. We conclude that the system always remains unstable for $01$ provides instability only for the special case.

Two dimensional analogue of vacuum sector of the Brans Dicke gravity [1] is studied to obtain dynamics of anisotropic spherical symmetric perfect fluid. Solutions of dynamical field equations are obtained in terms of time and radial coordinates. In static regime the obtained solutions leads to a dark matter fluid with state equation $\\gamma=\\frac{p(\\rho)}{\\varrho}=-0.25.$ For non-static regime the fluid can be treat as a regular matter with positive barotropic index $\\gamma>0.$ Evaluation of total mass of the fluid leads to choose particular values on the Brans Dick parameter as $\\omega>\\frac{2}{3};\\omegafluid are obtained in its static regime. In case $\\omega>0$ the apparent horizon is covered by event horizon and hence the cosmic censorship hypothesis is still maintained as valid. \\\\ In second part of the paper we obtain de Broglie pilot wave of our fluid model. It can be describe particles ensemble which are distinguished from each other by $\\omega.$ Incident current density of particles ensemble is evaluated on the event and apparent horizon describing the `Hawking radiation` in statistical mechanics perspective. The quantum potential is calculated on the event horizon which is independent from $\\omega$ but the evaluated quantum potential on the apparent horizon is depended to particular value of $\\omega$.

In this paper, the relationship between the classical Dicke-Jaynes-Cummings-Gaudin (DJCG) model and the nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation is studied. It is shown that the classical DJCG model is equivalent to a stationary NLS equation. Moreover, the standard NLS equation can be solved by the classical DJCG model and a suitably chosen higher order flow. Further, it is also shown that classical DJCG model can be transformed into the classical Gaudin spin model in an external magnetic field through a deformation of Lax matrix. Finally, the separated variables are constructed on the common level sets of Casimir functions and the generalized action-angle coordinates are introduced via the Hamilton-Jacobi equation.

We propose and demonstrate a scheme for strongly radially confining a single neutral atom in a bichromatic far-off resonance optical dipole trap(BFORT) . BFORT is composed of a blue-detuned Laguerre-Gaussian $LG^1_ 0$ beam and a red-detuned Gaussian beam. The trapping radial dimension of a single atom trapped in the Gaussian FORT can be greatly compressed by imposing a blue-detuned Laguerre-Gaussian $LG^1_ 0$ beam with moderate potential depth. By modulating the potential depth of the Gaussian FORT we observed that the resonant and parametric excitation of the oscillatory motion of a single atom in this BFORT and obtained the oscillation frequency that well fits prediction from the theoretical model. The frequency measurement shows that effective trapping dimension can be greatly sharper than that diffraction limited of microscopic objective we used. Then we show that the excess scattering rate due to imposing blue detuned light can be eliminated when single atoms is close to ground-state theoretically. So BFORT suits the purpose of acting as a Lamb-Dicke trap for further cooling a single neutral atom to motion ground-state and finding application in quantum information progressing.

Receivers designed for diagnostic applications range from those having moderate sensitivity to those possessing large dynamic range. Digital receivers have a dynamic range which are a function of the number of bits represented by the ADC and subsequent processing. If some of this range is sacrificed for extreme sensitivity, noise power can then be used to perform two-point load calibrations. Since load temperatures can be precisely determined, the receiver can be quickly and accurately characterized; minute changes in system gain can then be detected, and systematic errors corrected. In addition, using receiver pairs in a balanced approach to measuring X+, X-, Y+, Y-, reduces systematic offset errors from non-identical system gains, and changes in system performance. This paper describes and demonstrates a balanced BPM-style diagnostic receiver, employing Dicke-switching to establish and maintain real-time system calibration. Benefits of such a receiver include wide bandwidth, solid absolute accuracy, improved position accuracy, and phase-sensitive measurements. System description, static and dynamic modelling, and measurement data are presented.

The Machian cosmological solution satisfying $\\phi =O(\\rho /\\omega)$ for the perfect-fluid with negative pressure is discussed. When the coefficient of the equation of state $\\gamma \\to -1/3$, the gravitational constant approaches to constant. If we assume the present mass density $\\rho_{0}\\sim \\rho_{c}$ (critical density), the parameter $\\epsilon$ ($\\gamma =(\\epsilon -1)/3$) has a value of order $10^{-3}$ to support the present gravitational constant. The closed model is valid for $\\omega <-3/2\\epsilon$ and exhibits the slow accelerating expansion. We understand why the coupling parameter $| \\omega |$ is so large ($\\omega \\sim -10^{3}$). The time-variation of the gravitational constant $| \\dot{G}/G| \\sim 10^{-13} yr^{-1}$ at present is derived in this model.
