Turner's Syndrome Turner's Syndrome Name: Brian Location: N/A Country: N/A Date: N/A Question: What is genetic abmormality Turner's Syndrome? Replies: Hi Brian Turner Syndrome is a chromosomal condition that results from the total or partial absence of one of the two X chromosones normally found in women. It occours in 1 of every 2.000-2.500 females born. It is not associated with environmental or other external factors, and no real causes have been found until now seeming to be a random occurrence. The main consequences are short stature and infertility, but can also occur heart, kidney and tyroid health problems. Absolutely there is no relation with mental retardation and it is recommendad that children and women with Turner Syndrome led complete normal life. Even there not a cure, up to now, there are procedures that can be taken to help with the symptoms as application of growth hormones, althrough that must be done only under medical recommendation and control.

Coon Hunting Coon Hunting Nature Bulletin No. 174-A January 9, 1965 Forest Preserve District of Cook County Seymour Simon, President Roland F. Eisenbeis, Supt. of Conservation COON HUNTING Folks living on a farm or in a small town, especially if not too far from a creek or river, seem to have more fun than city people. They spend more time out-of-doors. One of their most prized enjoyments is "coon hunting". It has all the drama and music of an opera. At dusk, raccoons come down from their den trees to feed and play. They are inquisitive animals and frequently travel quite a distance. So, on a warm damp night after a spell of freezing weather, a little group of neighbors may gather, with their hounds, to go coon hunting. On such nights raccoons are more active, their scent is more easily followed by the hounds, and the dogs can be heard from longer distances.

Improved $?$-weapons for Higgs hunting

E-Print Network [OSTI]

In this work, we use the results from Higgs searches in the $\\gamma\\gamma$ and $\\tau\\tau$ decay channels at LHC and indirect bounds as BR$(B \\to X_s \\gamma)$ to constrain the parameter space of a generic MSSM Higgs sector. In particular, we include the latest CMS results that look for additional Higgs states with masses up to 1 TeV. We show that the $\\tau \\tau$ channel is the best and most accurate weapon in the hunt for new Higgs states beyond the Standard Model. We obtain that present experimental results rule out additional neutral Higgs bosons in a generic MSSM below 300 GeV for any value of $\\tan \\beta$ and, for instance, values of $\\tan \\beta$ above 30 are only possible for Higgs masses above 600 GeV. ATLAS stored data has the potential to render this bound obsolete in the near future.

And though my parents may say I'm stingy, I like to think I'm economical. Or better yet, I'm a bargain hunter. In the second of two entries on apartment hunting, I discuss things to look for that might help keep your energy bills low. When you think about it, energy bills can, in effect, increase your rent

Description of plasma focus current sheath as the Turner relaxed state of a Hall magnetofluid

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The central mystery of plasma focus research is the two orders-of-magnitude-higher-than-thermal fusion reaction rate and the fact that both the space-resolved neutron spectra and space-resolved reactionproton spectra show features which can be ascribed only to a rotational motion of the center-of-mass of the reacting deuteron population. It has been suggested earlier [S. K. H. Auluck IEEE Trans. Plasma Sci.25 37 (1997)] that this and other experimental observations can be consistently explained in terms of a hypothesis involving rotation of the current carrying plasma annulus behind the imploding gas-dynamic shock. Such rotation (more generally mass flow) is an in-built feature of relaxed state of a two-fluid plasma [R. N. Sudan Phys. Rev. Lett.42 1277 (1979)]. Relaxation in the Hall magnetofluid approximation in which the generalized Ohms law includes the Hall effect term and the magnetic convection term but omits the contributions to the electric field from resistive dissipation electron pressure gradient thermoelectric effect electron inertia etc. has been extensively studied by many authors. In the present paper Turners [IEEE Trans. Plasma Sci.PS-14 849 (1986)] degenerate solution for the relaxed state of the Hall magnetohydrodynamicplasma has been adapted to the case of an infinitely long annular current carrying plasma a tractable idealization of the current sheath of a plasma focus. The resulting model is consistent with experimental values of ion kinetic energy and observation of predominantly radially directed neutron emission in good shots.

Macroscopic and molecular-scale assessment of soil lead contamination impacted by seasonal dove hunting activities

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Environmental contamination of lead (Pb) in soils and sediments poses serious threats to human and ecological health. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of seasonal dove sports hunting activities on Pb contamination in acid forest soils. A grid sampling method was used to investigate the spatial distribution of Pb contamination in surface soils. Soils were analyzed for total metal(loid) concentration and characterized for physicochemical properties and mineralogy. Adsorption isotherm experiments were also conducted to understand the reactivity and retention capacity of Pb(II) in soils. Finally, synchrotron-based X-ray microprobe and X-ray absorption spectroscopy were used to understand the chemical speciation of Pb that controls the retention/release mechanisms of Pb in soils. There was no excessive accumulation of Pb at the site. However, the concentration of Pb in surface soils was greater than the background level (<16 mg kg{sup -1}). The contamination level of Pb was as high as 67 mg kg{sup -1} near a patch of corn field where lime was frequently applied. A microfocused X-ray microprobe analysis showed the presence of Pb pellet fragments that predominantly contain oxidized Pb(II), suggesting that oxidative dissolution was occurring in soils. Dissolved Pb(II) can be readily retained in soils up to {approx}3,600 mg kg{sup -1} via inner-sphere and outer-sphere surface complexation on carbon and aluminol functional groups of soil components, suggesting that partitioning reactions control the concentration of Pb in soil solution. The fate of Pb is likely to be controlled by (1) oxidative dissolution process of Pb(0) pellets and (2) the release of outer-sphere and/or inner-sphere Pb surface complexes in humic substances and aluminosilicate/Al oxyhydroxides. Although no remedial actions are immediately required, the long-term accumulation of Pb in soils should be carefully monitored in protecting ecosystem and water quality at the dove hunting field.

Large-scale discovery of conopeptides and conoproteins in the injectable venom of a fish-hunting cone snail using a combined proteomic and transcriptomic approach

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Predatory marine snails of the genus Conus use venom containing a complex mixture of bioactive peptides to subdue their prey. Here we report on a comprehensive analysis of the protein content of injectable venom from Conus consors, an indo-pacific fish-hunting cone snail. By matching MS/MS data against an extensive set of venom gland transcriptomic mRNA sequences, we identified 105 components out of ~400 molecular masses detected in the venom. Among them, we described new conotoxins belonging to the A, M- and O1-superfamilies as well as a novel superfamily of disulphide free conopeptides. A high proportion of the deduced sequences (36%) corresponded to propeptide regions of the A- and M-superfamilies, raising the question of their putative role in injectable venom. Enzymatic digestion of higher molecular mass components allowed the identification of new conkunitzins (~7kDa) and two proteins in the 25 and 50kDa molecular mass ranges respectively characterised as actinoporin-like and hyaluronidase-like protein. These results provide the most exhaustive and accurate proteomic overview of an injectable cone snail venom to date, and delineate the major protein families present in the delivered venom. This study demonstrates the feasibility of this analytical approach and paves the way for transcriptomics-assisted strategies in drug discovery.

HUNTING THE QUARK GLUON PLASMA.

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The U.S. Department of Energy's Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) construction project was completed at BNL in 1999, with the first data-taking runs in the summer of 2000. Since then the early measurements at RHIC have yielded a wealth of data, from four independent detectors, each with its international collaboration of scientists: BRAHMS, PHENIX, PHOBOS, and STAR [1]. For the first time, collisions of heavy nuclei have been carried out at colliding-beam energies that have previously been accessible only for high-energy physics experiments with collisions of ''elementary'' particles such as protons and electrons. It is at these high energies that the predictions of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the fundamental theory that describes the role of quarks and gluons in nuclear matter, come into play, and new phenomena are sought that may illuminate our view of the basic structure of matter on the sub-atomic scale, with important implications for the origins of matter on the cosmic scale. The RHIC experiments have recorded data from collisions of gold nuclei at the highest energies ever achieved in man-made particle accelerators. These collisions, of which hundreds of millions have now been examined, result in final states of unprecedented complexity, with thousands of produced particles radiating from the nuclear collision. All four of the RHIC experiments have moved quickly to analyze these data, and have begun to understand the phenomena that unfold from the moment of collision as these particles are produced. In order to provide benchmarks of simpler interactions against which to compare the gold-gold collisions, the experiments have gathered comparable samples of data from collisions of a very light nucleus (deuterium) with gold nuclei, as well as proton-proton collisions, all with identical beam energies and experimental apparatus. The early measurements have revealed compelling evidence for the existence of a new form of nuclear matter at extremely high density and temperature--a medium in which the predictions of QCD can be tested, and new phenomena explored, under conditions where the relevant degrees of freedom, over nuclear volumes, are expected to be those of quarks and gluons, rather than of hadrons. This is the realm of the quark gluon plasma, the predicted state of matter whose existence and properties are now being explored by the RHIC experiments.

Determining age of whales

Broader source: All U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office Webpages (Extended Search)

Determining age of whales Determining age of whales Name: Bruce W Walkey Age: N/A Location: N/A Country: N/A Date: N/A Question: While browsing through the Internet, I came upon a question by two fifth grade students. Their question got me thinking and now I pose it to you. How can you determine the age of whales? Since they are mammals, can the methods that are used on humans be used on whales? What are some tests that can be done on bones or tissues to determine age? Looking forward to your reply. Replies: Although it is difficult to determine the age of whales (unless they are born in captivity and we know their birth date), several methods have been commonly used: 1) (if female) the examination of the ovaries 2) Examination of the ridges on baleen, which are not uniform in size and analogous to tree rings. The problem with this is that baleen wears away over time. 3) Studying layers of ossification in an ear bone is probably the most accurate method of aging, since internal bones don't wear away. The biggest problem with aging methods is that they usually require that you are dissecting the animal, and often, we would like a method of aging for live active animals. The best we can do here is to compare the size and markings of whales of known age to those found in the wild. Great question!

Gender determination in populus

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Gender, the expression of maleness or femaleness, in dioecious plants has been associated with changes in morphology, physiology, ecological position, and commercial importance of several species, including members of the Salicaceae family. Various mechanisms have been proposed to explain the expression of gender in Salicaceae, including sex chromosomes, simple Mendelian genes, quantitative genes, environment, and genotype-by-environment interactions. Published reports would favor a genetic basis for gender. The objective of this study was to identify molecular markers associated with gender in a segregating family of hybrid poplars. Bulked segregant analysis and chi-squared analysis were used to test for the occurrence of sex chromosomes, individual loci, and chromosome ratios (i.e., ploidy levels) as the mechanisms for gender determination. Examination of 2488 PCR based RAPD markers from 1219 primers revealed nine polymorphic bands between male and female bulked samples. However, linkage analysis indicated that none of these markers were significantly associated with gender. Chisquared results for difference in male-to-female ratios between diploid and triploid genotypes also revealed no significant differences. These findings suggest gender is not controlled via sex chromosomes, simple Mendelian loci or ratios of autosome to gender-determining loci. It is possible that gender is determined genetically by regions of the genome not sampled by the tested markers or by a complex of loci operating in an additive threshold manner or in an epistatic manner. It is also possible that gender is determined environmentally at an early zygote stage, canalizing gender expression.

Determining Material Degradation Determining Material Degradation Name: Hamish Status: student Grade: 6-8 Location: CA Country: USA Date: Summer 2013 Question: I am working on a science project about photo-degradation of plastic film. My question is how much degraded a plastic film should be to say that it was 100% photo-degraded? The plastic film I am photo-degrading is turning into dust when I touch it, what level of degradation is that? Replies: Hi Hamish, Thanks for the question. You will need to define what you mean by photo-degraded. 100% photo-degraded could be that the film becomes translucent and lets through only blurry images. Or it could mean that the film turns to dust when you touch it. As long as you clearly state in your science project what you mean by 100% photo-degraded, you will be doing a good job.

Mental Health, Determinants of

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract In this article, the authors first review differences between mental health and physical health conditions and explicitly consider how the health production function can be applied to mental health. They then review the research on the determinants of mental health, focusing on the contributions of economists to this literature. They focus on three important inputs to mental health production: income, macroeconomic conditions, and employment.

Williston hunt goes on despite slowdown

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Despite a decline of nearly 24% in reported well completions in the Williston basin last year, exploratory interest is still very much alive, expecially on the far west side of the international region. Petroleum Information reports that completions in the basin dropped from 1,127 to 860 last year. There were several important discoveries made in the basin during the year, and the current slate calls for some more very soon. Basin exploration interest centers on the province's west side, mostly in Daniels and Valley counties, Mont. But there continues to be development work in North Dakota, hugging the Missouri River near Williston where McKenzie County, at the basin's center, ranked eighth in the region with 155 reported well completions last year, according to the Denver publication.

Ultratrace determination of curium

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Development of a method for detection of curium at near single atom levels is being undertaken as a part of the Advanced Concepts Project at Argonne National Laboratory with funding from the US Department of Energy, Office of Arms Control and Nonproliferation. Ultratrace determination of curium, with the ability to quantify the fraction that is curium-242, provides a signature method of detecting clandestine reprocessing of recently irradiated uranium targets. Curium initially present in any of a variety of materials such as air filters, solid or liquid process waste, soil, flora, or fauna can be recovered via current chemical separations processing techniques. Using the ultratrace method being developed, such recovered curium will be quantified with thousand-fold higher sensitivity than the best currently available method which is alpha counting. This high sensitivity arises because, on average, a given trivalent curium (Cm{sup 3+}) ion can emit a very large number of fluorescence photons before alpha decay occurs.

Cat Dish Bacteria Determination

Dish Bacteria Determination Dish Bacteria Determination Name: Ashlyn Status: student Grade: 6-8 Location: FL Country: USA Date: Summer 2011 Question: Is there a simple way to measure bacteria in cat's water dishes without doing something with Agar? To measure bacteria in a water bowl, do I need to use a microscope? I am thinking of using different materials (metal, plastic, and glass) to see which of those has the grows the most bacteria. Replies: Hello Ashlyn, That is a very good idea for a science project. Usually the best way to do a quantitative analysis of bacteria content is to take a measured amount of a liquid, plate it out on some type of agar and do a colony count. This will give a basic indication of bacterial load, but not differentiate the types of bacteria. The most common type of bacteria that causes a pink film to form on water bowls and showers, etc. is Serratia marcescens. It is a fairly harmless organism that reacts with standing water. It may only adhere to the walls of the container and not be 'free floating' in the water. A microscope would not likely help unless you were able to do special stains to help see the bacteria. You might also want to add stoneware or ceramic to your list. Just so you know stoneware or ceramic make the best containers for cats to drink out of. It keeps the water fresher: Maybe less bacteria? You might just have to rely on a visual inspection of the containers to see which has more pink per surface area.

Gender determination of avian embryo

DOE Patents [OSTI]

Disclosed is a method for gender determination of avian embryos. During the embryo incubation process, the outer hard shells of eggs are drilled and samples of allantoic fluid are removed. The allantoic fluids are directly introduced into an ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) for analysis. The resulting spectra contain the relevant marker peaks in the positive or negative mode which correlate with unique mobilities which are sex-specific. This way, the gender of the embryo can be determined.

Determining solar abundances using helioseismology

E-Print Network [OSTI]

The recent downward revision of solar photospheric abundances of Oxygen and other heavy elements has resulted in serious discrepancies between solar models and solar structure as determined through helioseismology. In this work we investigate the possibility of determining the solar heavy-element abundance without reference to spectroscopy by using helioseismic data. Using the dimensionless sound-speed derivative in the solar convection zone, we find that the heavy element abundance, Z, of 0.0172 +/- 0.002, which is closer to the older, higher value of the abundances.

Toeplitz determinants with merging singularities

E-Print Network [OSTI]

We study asymptotic behavior for determinants of $n\\times n$ Toeplitz matrices corresponding to symbols with two Fisher-Hartwig singularities at the distance $2t\\ge0$ from each other on the unit circle. We obtain large $n$ asymptotics which are uniform for $0gas, and a conjecture of Fyodorov and Keating on the second moment of powers of the characteristic polynomials of random matrices.

Rough sets determined by tolerances

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract We show that for any tolerance R on U, the ordered sets of lower and upper rough approximations determined by R form ortholattices. These ortholattices are completely distributive, thus forming atomistic Boolean lattices, if and only if R is induced by an irredundant covering of U, and in such a case, the atoms of these Boolean lattices are described. We prove that the ordered set RS of rough sets determined by a tolerance R on U is a complete lattice if and only if it is a complete subdirect product of the complete lattices of lower and upper rough approximations. We show that R is a tolerance induced by an irredundant covering of U if and only if RS is an algebraic completely distributive lattice, and in such a situation a quasi-Nelson algebra can be defined on RS. We present necessary and sufficient conditions which guarantee that for a tolerance R on U, the ordered set RS X is a lattice for all X ? U , where R X denotes the restriction of R to the set X and RS X is the corresponding set of rough sets. We introduce the disjoint representation and the formal concept representation of rough sets, and show that they are DedekindMacNeille completions of RS.

Determination of a mutational spectrum

DOE Patents [OSTI]

A method of resolving (physically separating) mutant DNA from nonmutant DNA and a method of defining or establishing a mutational spectrum or profile of alterations present in nucleic acid sequences from a sample to be analyzed, such as a tissue or body fluid. The present method is based on the fact that it is possible, through the use of DGGE, to separate nucleic acid sequences which differ by only a single base change and on the ability to detect the separate mutant molecules. The present invention, in another aspect, relates to a method for determining a mutational spectrum in a DNA sequence of interest present in a population of cells. The method of the present invention is useful as a diagnostic or analytical tool in forensic science in assessing environmental and/or occupational exposures to potentially genetically toxic materials (also referred to as potential mutagens); in biotechnology, particularly in the study of the relationship between the amino acid sequence of enzymes and other biologically-active proteins or protein-containing substances and their respective functions; and in determining the effects of drugs, cosmetics and other chemicals for which toxicity data must be obtained.
