Meteorological tsunamis on the coasts of British Columbia and Washington

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Tsunami-like sea level oscillations recently recorded by tide gauges located at offshore, as well as sheltered, sites along the coasts of British Columbia (Canada) and Washington State (USA) are identified as meteorological tsunamis. The events resemble seismically generated tsunamis but have an atmospheric, rather than seismic, origin. The event of 9 December 2005 was sufficiently strong to trigger an automatic tsunami alarm, while other events generated oscillations in several ports that were potentially strong enough to cause damage to marine craft. Analysis of coincident 1-min sea level data and high-frequency atmospheric pressure data confirms that the events originated with atmospheric pressure jumps and trains of atmospheric gravity waves with amplitudes of 1.5–3 hPa. The pronounced events of 13 July 2007 and 26 February 2008 are examined in detail. Findings reveal that the first atmospheric pressure event had a propagation speed of 24.7 m/s and an azimuth of 352°; the second event had a speed of 30.6 m/s and an azimuth of 60°. These speeds and directions are in close agreement with high-altitude geostrophic winds (the jet stream) indicating that the atmospheric disturbances generating the tsunami-like sea level oscillations are likely wind-transported perturbations rather than freely propagating atmospheric gravity waves.

Q-values of the Superallowed beta-Emitters 26m-Al, 42-Sc and 46-V and their impact on V_ud and the Unitarity of the CKM Matrix

E-Print Network [OSTI]

The beta-decay Q_EC-values of the superallowed beta emitters 26m-Al, 42-Sc and 46-V have been measured with a Penning trap to a relative precision of better than 8x10^-9. Our result for 46-V, 7052.72(31) keV, confirms a recent measurement that differed significantly from the previously accepted reaction-based Q_EC-value. However, our results for 26m-Al and 42-Sc, 4232.83(13) keV and 6426.13(21) keV, are consistent with previous reaction-based values. By eliminating the possibility of a systematic difference between the two techniques, this result demonstrates that no significant shift in the deduced value of V_ud should be anticipated.

In vivo subcellular localization of Mal de Rio Cuarto virus (MRCV) non-structural proteins in insect cells reveals their putative functions

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The in vivo subcellular localization of Mal de Rio Cuarto virus (MRCV, Fijivirus, Reoviridae) non-structural proteins fused to GFP was analyzed by confocal microscopy. P5-1 showed a cytoplasmic vesicular-like distribution that was lost upon deleting its PDZ binding TKF motif, suggesting that P5-1 interacts with cellular PDZ proteins. P5-2 located at the nucleus and its nuclear import was affected by the deletion of its basic C-termini. P7-1 and P7-2 also entered the nucleus and therefore, along with P5-2, could function as regulators of host gene expression. P6 located in the cytoplasm and in perinuclear cloud-like inclusions, was driven to P9-1 viroplasm-like structures and co-localized with P7-2, P10 and {alpha}-tubulin, suggesting its involvement in viroplasm formation and viral intracellular movement. Finally, P9-2 was N-glycosylated and located at the plasma membrane in association with filopodia-like protrusions containing actin, suggesting a possible role in virus cell-to-cell movement and spread.

Tuberculosis in the non-adults from Romano-British Poundbury Camp, Dorset, England

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The prevalence of tuberculosis and pulmonary disease in 165 non-adults (under 17 years) from Romano-British Poundbury Camp (1st–3rd centuries ad) is examined. Previous studies have reported eleven individuals with tuberculosis in England during the Roman period, but none are of children. Ten (6.1%) non-adults between the ages of 3 and 15 years were identified that presented lesions suggestive of a pulmonary infection, with seven (4.2%) likely to have been suffering from tuberculosis. Pathological changes included spinal lytic lesions, active new bone on the visceral aspects of the ribs, widespread periostitis on the long bones, dactylitis, and osteomyelitis of the mandible and scapula. The nature of skeletal tuberculosis in children and various differential diagnoses are discussed. The results from this study increase our knowledge of tuberculosis in the UK, and suggest that the disease was much more prevalent in Romano-British society than has been previously reported.

Alteration of basaltic glasses from north-central British Columbia, Canada

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Evidence of palagonitization is seen on all glasses studied from three Pleistocene subglacial volcanoes in north-central British Columbia, Canada. Samples from foreset breccias of Tuya Butte are more highly palagonitized than those from the tephra cones of Ash Mountain and Southern Tuya. Extensive palagonitization is generally associated with authigenic mineralization (clays, zeolites). Palagonite composition varies widely relative to glass composition, and palagonite can be broadly categorized as either high-Al or low-Al, depending on whether Al was retained or lost to aqueous solutions during palagonitization. Loss of Al during palagonitization is related to closed-system alteration, including precipitation of aluminosilicate authigenic cements. Microenvironment appears to be more influential than macroenvironment in determining the composition of palagonite. Palagonite rinds are compositionally zoned, generally becoming progressively higher in Al and Ca, and lower in Fe and Mg, towards the innermost (later-formed) portions of the rinds. Phillipsite is the first zeolite formed, followed by chabazite. Analcime and calcite occur in the most highly palagonitized samples. Mass balance considerations indicate higher mass loss where palagonitization has not proceeded to the point where zeolite solubility limits were attained in the local solution. Zeolites occur in closed-system conditions (low flow rates), where little net system mass loss or gain has occurred. The colloidal nature of palagonite allows the effective adsorption of Rb, Cs, Sr, Ba, and REEs.

Potential benefits to fisheries and biodiversity of the Chagos Archipelago/British Indian Ocean Territory as a no-take marine reserve

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

On 1st April 2010, the British Government announced designation of the British Indian Ocean Territory – or Chagos Archipelago – as the world’s largest marine protected area (MPA). This near pristine ocean ecosystem now represents 16% of the worlds fully protected coral reef, 60% of the world’s no-take protected areas and an uncontaminated reference site for ecological studies. In addition these gains for biodiversity conservation, the Chagos/BIOT MPA also offers subsidiary opportunities to act as a fisheries management tool for the western Indian Ocean, considering its size and location. While the benefits of \\{MPAs\\} for coral-reef dwelling species are established, there is uncertainty about their effects on pelagic migratory species. This paper reviews the increasing body of evidence to demonstrate that positive, measurable reserve effects exist for pelagic populations and that migratory species can benefit from no-take marine reserves.

Geological controls on matrix permeability of Devonian Gas Shales in the Horn River and Liard basins, northeastern British Columbia, Canada

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Controls of matrix permeability are investigated for Devonian Gas Shales from the Horn River and Liard basins in northeastern British Columbia, Canada. Mineralogy is varied with high carbonate, high quartz and moderate quartz, carbonate and clay rich strata. Quartz content varies between 2 and 73%, carbonate varies between 1 and 93% and clay varies between 3 and 33%. The TOC content ranges between 0.3 and 6 wt.% and porosity varies between about 1 and 7%. For Horn River basin samples, quartz is mainly biogenic in origin derived from radiolarians. TOC content increases with the quartz content suggesting the TOC and quartz both are derived from siliceous phytoplankton. A positive relationship between porosity and quartz content is due to the positive relationship between quartz and TOC. Matrix permeability parallel to bedding varies between 7.5E? 02 and 7.1E? 07 mD at an effective stress of 15 MPa. Variation in permeability is due to a complex combination of factors that includes origin and distribution of minerals, pore?size distribution and fabric. Mercury intrusion capillary curves indicate that the higher matrix permeability values (> 2E? 03 mD) occurs in samples that contain interconnected pore apertures greater than 16 ?m even when these samples may contain less macropores than low permeability samples. The fabric of high permeability samples can be either isotropic or anisotropic; however permeability of anisotropic samples is more sensitive to changes in effective stress than isotropic samples. More highly anisotropic samples contain moderate amounts of quartz, carbonate and in some, clay. High permeability samples that contain a more balanced ratio between micro-, meso- and macroporosity would not only have faster flow rates but also greater access to sorbed gas within the microporosity compared to samples that lack mesopores. Several Muskwa samples compared to Evie and Besa River samples contain higher quartz, moderate clay and high TOC content coupled with high permeability, less sensitivity to effective stress and balanced ratios between micro-, meso- and macroporosity would be a lower exploration risk due a greater propensity to fracture, the ability to produce and store hydrocarbons due to higher TOC contents and greater communication between macropores and micropores in the organic and clay fractions.

Monitoring biological effects of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans, and biphenyls in great blue heron chicks (Ardea herodias) in British Columbia

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

The Canadian Wildlife Service monitors levels of polychlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons in great blue heron (Ardea herodias) eggs in British Columbia as indicators of environmental contamination. The present project assessed the temporal effects of environmental contamination with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and other polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and biphenyls (PCBs) on hepatic microsomal ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activities and several morphological parameters in heron hatchlings. Between 1990 and 1992, eggs were collected from two great blue heron colonies in British Columbia that had elevated levels of contamination in 1988: Vancouver in 1990 and 1992, and Crofton in 1991. Biological parameters in the hatchlings and chemical contaminant levels in matched eggs from the same clutch were measured and compared with the findings from the same colonies studied in 1988. Levels of TCDD and other PCDDs and PCDFs had decreased significantly in both colonies since 1988. A concomitant decrease in EROD activity and incidence of chick edema, increase in body weight, and improvement of the reproductive success of the Crofton colony was observed. Body, yolk-free body, stomach, and intestine weights, tibia wet, dry, and ash weights, and tibia length regressed negatively on TCDD level (p < .01; n = 54). Hepatic EROD activity regressed positively on TCDD level (r[sup 2] = .49; p = .00005; n = 54). Regression of these parameters on the sum of TCDD toxic equivalents (TEQ) resulted in similar relationships. The reduction in severity of the effects observed in the contaminated colonies in the recent collections, accompanied by the declines in levels of PCDDs and PCDFs, was consistent with the dose-response relationships determined in 1988. 40 refs., 3 figs., 4 tabs.

advances, higher oil prices, advances, higher oil prices, reduced costs, and environmental needs have aligned to create a "perfect storm" of growth opportunity for a well-established method for enhancing oil recovery (EOR) in the U.S.: carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) flooding. The U.S. Department of Energy is sup- porting critical research to help America's oil producers take full advantage of that growth opportunity (see table on p. 3). CO 2 flooding is the fastest-growing EOR technique in the U.S. While production vol- umes and the number of projects for ther- mal, chemical, and other EOR processes have fallen off sharply since 1980, the num- ber of CO 2 projects has more than tripled, to more than 70 projects as of yearend 2004. Meanwhile, CO 2 production volumes have jumped twentyfold since the early 1980s

Short time proton dynamics in bulk ice and in porous anode solid oxide fuel cell materials

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Oxygen reduction and incorporation into solid electrolytes and the reverse reaction of oxygen evolution play a cru-cial role in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) applications. However a detailed un derstanding of the kinetics of the cor-responding reactions, i.e. on reaction mechanisms, rate limiting steps, reaction paths, electrocatalytic role of materials, is still missing. These include a thorough characterization of the binding potentials experienced by protons in the lattice. We report results of Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) measurements of the vibrational state of the protons in Ni- YSZ highly porous composites (75% to 90% ), a ceramic-metal material showing a high electrical conductivity and ther mal stability, which is known to be most effectively used as anodes for solid ox ide fuel cells. The results are compared with INS and Deep Inelastic Neutron Scattering (DINS) experiments on the proton binding states in bulk ice.

The British coal global warming R&D programme

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The threat of possible global warming is sufficient to warrant ‘least regrets’ measures to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and investigation of fallback options, such as carbon dioxide removal from coal-fired power plants. The Global Warming R&D Programme is investigating carbon dioxide removal options, sometimes called ‘Low CO2 Power Generation’. An assessment programme has estimated the thermal efficiency of a number of process schemes and concluded that gasification based systems, with the addition of a CO shift reactor and CO2 scrubbers or a membrane gas separator, provide promising approaches. A clean hydrogen fuel would be fired in a gas turbine and 90% of the CO2 removed and exported as a liquid stream for storage in exhausted oil or gas fields. Costs of such power plants are now being explored and a collaborative programme is commencing with membrane developers, with the aim of developing and testing membranes for this duty. The paper outlines the background and describes preparation for experimental work using CO2/H2 separating membranes.

On April 20, 2010, hydrocarbons escaped from the Macondo well into Transocean's Deepwater Horizon, resulting in fire and multiple explosions. 11 people on the rig died. The billion dollar Deepwater Horizon sank. 4.9 M gallons of product flowed from the well for 87 days creating an environmental nightmare for communities bordering on the Gulf of Mexico. BP established a $20 B reserve to pay for damages. Investigations and legal culpability continue to this day. In September 2010, the Institute for Nuclear Power Operators (INPO) issued Significant Operating Experience Report (SOER) 10-2, Engaged, Thinking Organizations. The industry had experienced 11 events, 9 in US commercial nuclear utilities, and 2 international, that had disturbing trends. The underlying causes highlighted by INPO were inadequate recognition of risk, weaknesses in application of significant operating experience, tolerance of equipment and personnel problems, and a significant drift in standards. While the noted INPO problems and the Deepwater Horizon event appear to have nothing in common, they do exhibit similarities in a drift away from expected behavior on the part of front line workers and their supervisors. At the same time, hidden hazards are accumulating in the environment leading to error intolerant conditions. Without a good understanding of this concept, many organizations tend to focus on the person who 'touched it last', while missing the deeper organizational factors that led that individual to think that what they were doing was correct. An understanding of this failure model is important in reconstruction of events and crafting effective corrective actions. It is much more important, however, for leaders in high hazard industries to recognize when they are approaching error intolerant conditions and take steps immediately to add safety margin. Geochemical evidence of chemical equilibria in the South Meager Creek Geothermal System, British Columbia, Canada

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

Meager geothermal reservoir appears to be in ''thermochemical'' equilibrium as indicated by constant ion-concentration ratios (B/Li, B/K, NaLi, Na/Cl etc.). The Na/Li ratio describes the thermal conditions of the first and the deepest equilibrium reached by the thermal waters, whereas the Na/K indicates a secondary and shallower equilibrium. Analysis of the correlations between K, Na and Cl indicate that discharge from well MCl is probably a mixture between a single brine and high-chloride cool waters.

Elephant found in Monkman Pass - British Columbia gas play has world class potential

SciTech Connect (OSTI)

This paper summarizes the exploration activity of BP Canada in the Monkman Pass area of Canada along with the historical activity that has led to this major natural gas discovery. Estimated reserves in this area, from two producing zones, exceeds six trillion cubic feet. Fewer than 5 percent of fields in North America have that type of potential. The main producing horizons were itentified and the Pardonet and Baldonnel formations which are comprised mainly of dolomites with some interbedded sandstones. Primary porosity in these formations is quite low, but extensive fracture systems in the crestal and forelimb areas of the structures enhance the reservoirs. The paper also discusses the cost and economics of extracting and shipping this natural gas to market and remaining competitive.

Fu Manchu versus Dr Livingstone in the Dark Continent? Representing China, Africa and the West in British broadsheet newspapers

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

In recent years diplomatic and economic relations between China and many African countries have deepened. This has been driven largely by China's remarkable economic growth, which has increased demand for energy and commodities, thus encouraging trade and investment with different African countries. Additionally, China is playing a key role in the emerging challenge to the unequal architecture of global trade and governance, for which it seeks political allies. For Africa, the impacts of these deepening relationships are mixed. Rising commodity prices, direct investment, aid, and cheap consumer goods can be beneficial; but China also threatens to undercut local manufacturing sectors and compete for export markets, notably in textiles. China also has a history of support for authoritarian and corrupt regimes, and its (stated) insistence on non-interference in sovereign affairs may undermine more progressive efforts towards accountability, transparency, conflict reduction, and environmental and social protection. This paper explores how UK broadsheet newspapers represent China's complex relations in Africa, and in doing so, how they reflect on the West's own role(s) in Africa. The paper concludes by debating the importance of these media images at a time when China's rise is being anxiously observed by western publics and policy communities.
