In one sense he was right. Not much before 1994, Fermilab's Tevatron began probing precisely this range of energy, and discovered the top quark. In another sense, though, Fermi was wrong. Nitrogen management in landfill leachate: Application of SHARON, ANAMMOX and combined SHARON-ANAMMOX process

Highlights: Black-Right-Pointing-Pointer Significant research on ammonia removal from leachate by SHARON and ANAMMOX process. Black-Right-Pointing-Pointer Operational parameters, microbiology, biochemistry and application of the process. Black-Right-Pointing-Pointer SHARON-ANAMMOX process for leachate a new research and this paper gives wide facts. Black-Right-Pointing-Pointer Cost-effective process, alternative to existing technologies for leachate treatment. Black-Right-Pointing-Pointer Address the issues and operational conditions for application in leachate treatment. - Abstract: In today's context of waste management, landfilling of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is considered to be one of the standard practices worldwide. Leachate generated from municipal landfills has become a great threat to the surroundings as it contains high concentration of organics, ammonia and other toxic pollutants. Emphasis has to be placed on the removal of ammonia nitrogen in particular, derived from the nitrogen content of the MSW and it is a long term pollution problem in landfills which determines when the landfill can be considered stable. Several biological processes are available for the removal of ammonia but novel processes such as the Single Reactor System for High Activity Ammonia Removal over Nitrite (SHARON) and Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidation (ANAMMOX) process have great potential and several advantages over conventional processes. The combined SHARON-ANAMMOX process for municipal landfill leachate treatment is a new, innovative and significant approach that requires more research to identify and solve critical issues. This review addresses the operational parameters, microbiology, biochemistry and application of both the processes to remove ammonia from leachate.

D. Nichols announced plans for a complete and authoritative scientific record of all research work performed by Manhattan District contractors. However, I want to focus on a specific slice of that history, one that is going strong and is well represented across the DOE complex. The running joke among the technicians The running joke among the technicians working in the Main Ring tunnel is: "Beam by Monday, right?" Right. It's a phrase that has roused many from a good night's sleep over the last 25 years, when one of the balky dipoles failed, requiring replacement. But not anymore. Beam was shut off on September 15, and now, down in the location designated FZero, pipes, wires and cables dangle like amputated limbs in the space where 12-ton magnets and radiofrequency cavities once stood. Greg "Red Dog" Lawrence, who supervises the mechanical support crews dismantling the accelerator, begged to be allowed to cut out the first magnet. "I took this great big blade thing with a hammer," he said, "and chopped right through the bellows."

Characterization of Field Exposed Thin Film Modules: Preprint

DOE Green Energy (OSTI)

Test arrays of thin film modules have been deployed at the Solar Energy Centre near New Delhi, India since 2002-2003. Performances of these arrays were reported by O.S. Sastry [1]. This paper reports on NREL efforts to support SEC by performing detailed characterization of selected modules from the array. Modules were selected to demonstrate both average and worst case power loss over the 8 years of outdoor exposure. The modules characterized included CdTe, CIS and three different types of a-Si. All but one of the a-Si types were glass-glass construction. None of the modules had edge seals. Detailed results of these tests are presented along with our conclusions about the causes of the power loss for each technology.

D. Nichols announced plans for a complete and authoritative scientific record of all research work performed by Manhattan District contractors. However, I want to focus on a specific slice of that history, one that is going strong and is well represented across the DOE complex. I'm referring to DOE's Scientific and Technical Information Program (STIP, www.osti.gov/stip). Just a month ago, STIP representatives from across the DOE complex convened

The classical arts of the progymnasmata and Quintilian's Institutio Oratoria for the modern composition student

E-Print Network (OSTI)

This thesis adapts the classical exercises of the graphics. progymnasntata and the educational pedagogy of the Roman educator Quintilian's Instituted Oratoria for use in modern composition classrooms, specifically the classrooms of ENGL 104 at Texas A&M University. This pragmatic application blends with theoretical discussion the works of composition theorists such as P.J. Corbett and Sharon Crowley. Yet, my work maintains independence from previous attempts to adapt classical rhetoric into composition classrooms by finding its main influence in Quintilian and by balancing a wholesale historical insertion of ancient pedagogies with modern composition theories, studies, and examples.

The New World of i-Science The New World of i-Science by David Wojick Sharon Jordan on Tue, 25 Jan, 2011 Welcome to the new world of i-Science -- a new concept taking hold among federal R&D circles, intended to fuel the acceleration of discovery and innovation. The term "i-Science" refers to Internet-based science, which means science based on radical new access to Information, Ideas, Innovations and Individuals. These are the real i's in i-Science. In the last decade access to new information and facts, especially research results, has increased dramatically. But science is about far more than facts, it is about ideas. New questions, hypotheses and speculations - the engine of scientific progress - circulate faster than ever before. See http://www.osti.gov/ostiblog/home/entry/sharing_results_is_the_engine

The Jordan Aha! Test for Visualizations The Jordan Aha! Test for Visualizations by Sharon Jordan on Wed, 24 Mar, 2010 It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Such is the justification and hope for visualizations. Examples of enlightening visualizations are structural models of molecules like the carbon-60 Bucky Ball used in OSTI's recent YouTube video. The model shows a carbon atom at each intersection of molecular bonds. Another example of an enlightening visualization is Charles Joseph Minard's famous graph showing the decreasing size of Napoleon's army as it marches to Moscow and back with the size of the army equal to the width of the line. Visualizations are often beautiful, but to be useful they must also convey a message. At OSTI, we have adopted what has come to be called the

Flowers of the Bible Flowers of the Bible Nature Bulletin No. 713 April 13, 1963 Forest Preserve District of Cook County Seymour Simon, President Roberts Mann, Conservation Editor FLOWERS OF THE BIBLE "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets" (Matthew 5:17). Reverently and humbly I venture to explain some of the myths and misconceptions that have accumulated about the flowers mentioned in the Bible. It is a remarkable fact that, other than the blossoms on flowering shrubs and trees such as the almond, there are only three: the lily, the rose, and the camphire. Curiously, too, all three are mentioned in the Song of Solomon: "My beloved is unto me as a cluster of camphire in the vineyards of Engedi. I am the rose of Sharon and the lily of the valleys . Thy plants are an orchard of pomegranates, with pleasant fruits; camphire, with spikenard, spikenard and saffron. The spikenard referred to is a Himalayan plant from whose roots was and is extracted a precious ointment and perfume. It is nothing like our American spikenard, a common woodland plant. Saffron, used in curry and as a yellow dye, is the product of several species of crocuses native in Greece and Asia Minor.

December 11, 1998 | Number 23 December 11, 1998 | Number 23 FermiNews Main Page Response in FermiNews, 05/12/2000 Santa and sleigh Santa at Nearly the Speed of Light by Arnold Pompos, Purdue University, and Sharon Butler, Office of Public Affairs About this time of year, inquisitive children of a certain age begin to question whether Santa is real. After all, Santa has a major delivery problem. There are some 2 billion children in the world expecting Christmas presents. Assuming an average of 2.5 children per household, then, Santa has to visit about 800 million homes scattered about the globe. The distance Santa has to travel can be estimated from the following. First, while the surface area of Earth is about 1014 square meters, only about 30 percent of that is land mass, or about 0.3 x 1014 square meters. Second, we’ll assume, for simplicity’s sake, that the 800 million homes are equally distributed on this land mass. Dividing 0.3 x 1014 by 800 million gives 4 x 104 square meters occupied by every household (about six football fields); the square root of that is the distance between households, about 200 meters. Multiply this by the 800 million households to get the distance Santa must travel on Christmas Eve to deliver all the children’s gifts: 160 million kilometers, farther than the distance from here to the sun.

Improved oil recovery in fluvial dominated deltaic reservoirs of Kansas - Near-term. Annual report, June 18, 1993--June 18, 1994

SciTech Connect

Common oil field problems exist in fluvial dominated deltaic reservoirs in Kansas. The problems are poor waterflood sweep and lack of reservoir management. The poor waterflood sweep efficiency is due to (1) reservoir heterogeneity, (2) channeling of injected water through high permeability zones or fractures, and (3) clogging of water injection wells with solids as a result of poor water quality. In many instances the lack of reservoir management is due to lack of (1) data collection and organization, (2) integrated analysis of existing data by geological and engineering personnel, and (3) identification of optimum recovery techniques. Two demonstration sites operated by different independent oil operators are involved in the project. The Nelson Lease (an existing waterflood) is located in Allen County, Kansas in the N.E. Savonburg Field and is operated by James E. Russell Petroleum, Inc. The Stewart Field (on the latter stage of primary production) is located in Finney County, Kansas and is operated by Sharon Resources, Inc. The objective is to increase recovery efficiency and economics in these type of reservoirs. The technologies being applied to increase waterflood sweep efficiency are (1) in situ permeability modification treatments, (2) infill drilling, (3) pattern changes, and (4) air flotation to improve water quality. The technologies being applied to improve reservoir management are (1) database development, (2) reservoir simulation, (3) transient testing, (4) database management, and (5) integrated geological and engineering analysis.

Improved oil recovery in fluvial dominated deltaic reservoirs of Kansas -- near-term. Seventh quarterly report, February 1, 1995--April 1, 1995

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

The objective of this project is to address waterflood problems of the type found in Cherokee Group reservoirs in southeastern Kansas and in Morrow sandstone reservoirs in southwestern Kansas. Two demonstration sites operated by different independent oil operators are involved in the project. The Nelson Lease (an existing waterflood) is located in Allen County, Kansas in the N.E. Savonburg Field and is operated by James E. Russell Petroleum, Inc. The Stewart Field (on latter stage of primary production) is located in Finney County, Kansas and is operated by Sharon Resources, Inc. General topics to be addressed will be (1) reservoir management and performance evaluation, (2) waterflood optimization, and (3) the demonstration of recovery processes involving off-the-shelf technologies which can be used to enhance waterflood recovery, increase reserves, and reduce the abandonment rate of these reservoir types. The reservoir management portion of the project will involve performance evaluation and will include such work as (1) reservoir characterization and the development of a reservoir database, (2) identification of operational problems, (3) identification of near wellbore problems, (4) identification of unrecovered mobile oil and estimation of recovery factors, and (5) identification of the most efficient and economical recovery process. The waterflood optimization portion of the project involves only the Nelson Lease. It will be based on the performance evaluation and will involve (1) design and implementation of a water cleanup system for the waterflood, (2) application of well remedial work such as polymer gel treatments to improve vertical sweep efficiency, and (3) changes in waterflood patterns to increase sweep efficiency. Finally, it is planned to implement an improved recovery process, possibly polymer augmented waterflood: on both field demonstration sites.

A Phase I Study of Short-Course Accelerated Whole Brain Radiation Therapy for Multiple Brain Metastases

SciTech Connect

Purpose: To define the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of a SHort-course Accelerated whole brain RadiatiON therapy (SHARON) in the treatment of patients with multiple brain metastases. Methods and Materials: A phase 1 trial in 4 dose-escalation steps was designed: 12 Gy (3 Gy per fraction), 14 Gy (3.5 Gy per fraction), 16 Gy (4 Gy per fraction), and 18 Gy (4.5 Gy per fraction). Eligibility criteria included patients with unfavorable recursive partitioning analysis (RPA) class > or =2 with at least 3 brain metastases or metastatic disease in more than 3 organ systems, and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status {<=}3. Treatment was delivered in 2 days with twice-daily fractionation. Patients were treated in cohorts of 6-12 to define the MTD. The dose-limiting toxicity (DLT) was defined as any acute toxicity {>=}grade 3, according to the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group scale. Information on the status of the main neurologic symptoms and quality of life were recorded. Results: Characteristics of the 49 enrolled patients were as follows: male/female, 30/19; median age, 66 years (range, 23-83 years). ECOG performance status was <3 in 46 patients (94%). Fourteen patients (29%) were considered to be in recursive partitioning analysis (RPA) class 3. Grade 1-2 acute neurologic (26.4%) and skin (18.3%) toxicities were recorded. Only 1 patient experienced DLT (neurologic grade 3 acute toxicity). With a median follow-up time of 5 months (range, 1-23 months), no late toxicities have been observed. Three weeks after treatment, 16 of 21 symptomatic patients showed an improvement or resolution of presenting symptoms (overall symptom response rate, 76.2%; confidence interval 0.95: 60.3-95.9%). Conclusions: Short-course accelerated radiation therapy in twice-daily fractions for 2 consecutive days is tolerated up to a total dose of 18 Gy. A phase 2 study has been planned to evaluate the efficacy on overall survival, symptom control, and quality of life indices.
