Author manuscript, published in "CCGrid 2010 (2010)" Dynamic TTL-Based Search In Unstructured Peer-to-Peer Networks

E-Print Network (OSTI)

AbstractResource discovery is a challenging issue in unstructured peer-to-peer networks. Blind search approaches, including flooding and random walks, are the two typical algorithms used in such systems. Blind flooding is not scalable because of its high communication cost. On the other hand, the performance of random walks approaches largely depends on the random choice of walks. Some informed mechanisms use additional information, usually obtained from previous queries, for routing. Such approaches can reduce the traffic overhead but they limit the query coverage. Furthermore, they usually rely on complex protocols to maintain information at each peer. In this paper, we propose two schemes which can be used to improve the search performance in unstructured peer-to-peer networks. The first one is a simple caching mechanism based on resource descriptions. Peers that offer resources send periodic advertisement messages. These messages are stored into a cache and are used for routing requests. The second scheme is a dynamic Time-To-Live (TTL) enabling messages to break their horizon. Instead of decreasing the query TTL by 1 at each hop, it is decreased by a value v such as 0 TTL; P2P computing

PEER REVIEW PROGRAM

SciTech Connect

The Institute for Regulatory Science (RS) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) jointly estab lished a peer-review program. As the program evolved, four types of review were established. A process for stakeholder participation in peer review eetings was also developed. While a committee established by the ASME provided oversight to the peer-review process, the RSI managed the day-to-day operations of peer review panels. Automotive Recycling Processes Win Awards Automotive Recycling Processes Win Awards The automobile shredder industry recovers over 10 million tons of ferrous (iron-containing) scrap annually from obsolete automobiles and sells the metals at a significant profit. After metals recovery, though, the auto recyclers are left with about 5 million tons of nonmetallic auto shredder residue (ASR) to dispose of annually. Argonne's processes to recover valuable plastics from this scrap have won two prestigious awards. Discover Award Finalist - S. Jody, E. Daniels and J. Pomykala Argonne's unique "froth flotation" process separates individual high-purity plastics from waste streams containing a mixture of plastics. The technology separates equal-density plastics, such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), high-impact polystyrene (HIPS), and polypropylene (PP), from each other and from other plastics during scrap shredding and metal recovery operations. Argonne's process has been used to recover selected plastics from ASR, disassembled car parts, obsolete appliances, industrial scrap plastics, and consumer electronics.

Awards and Citations Awards and Citations Art Rosenfeld, director of the Center for Building Science, has received the Department of Energy's 1993 Sadi Carnot Award for lifetime achievement in the field of energy conservation and renewable energy. During a 20-year career in the energy-efficiency field, he has contributed to both major analytical advances in energy analysis and practical programs designed to improve efficiency. He also helped develop the concepts of least-cost energy services and conservation supply curves, the two most widely used tools for least-cost utility planning. In 1975, Rosenfeld began a campaign to simulate building energy use more accurately; this effort evolved into the DOE-2 whole-building simulation program, now the international standard for simulating building energy use.

Diurnal Availability for Peer-to-Peer Systems

E-Print Network (OSTI)

This paper discusses an efficient approach to design and implement a highly available peer- to-peer system irrespective of peer timing and churn. Although peers in P2P system join or leave at whim, it has been found that most of the peers follow diurnal pattern of availability governed by the time of day effect. When considering a global P2P system, the cyclic behavior of peers situated on diff?erent time zones can be found complementary of one another. Our approach utilizes the diurnal pattern of globally dispersed peers to develop a grouping strategy. The objective of each group is to ensure 24x7 data availability within the group. To represent availability pattern we propose to divide 24 hours of a day into multiple slots and then to express the availability of a particular peer in each slot. In our approach, each peer collects slot availability information of a number of peers and forms small groups of 4 to 8 peers in such a way that the combined availability in each slot within a group is close to 100%. ...

MELCOR Peer Review

Science Conference Proceedings (OSTI)

MELCOR is a fully integrated, engineering-level computer code that models the progression of severe accidents in light water reactor nuclear power plants. The newest version of MELCOR is Version 1.8.1, July 1991. MELCOR development has reached the point that the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission sponsored a broad technical review by recognized experts to determine or confirm the technical adequacy of the code for the serious and complex analyses it is expected to perform. For this purpose, an eight-member MELCOR Peer Review Committee was organized. The Committee has completed its review of the MELCOR code: the review process and findings of the MELCOR Peer Review Committee are documented in this report. The Committee has determined that recommendations in five areas are appropriate: (1) MELCOR numerics, (2) models missing from MELCOR Version 1.8.1, (3) existing MELCOR models needing revision, (4) the need for expanded MELCOR assessment, and (5) documentation.

CONTAIN independent peer review

SciTech Connect

The CONTAIN code was developed by Sandia National Laboratories under the sponsorship of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to provide integrated analyses of containment phenomena. It is used to predict nuclear reactor containment loads, radiological source terms, and associated physical phenomena for a range of accident conditions encompassing both design-basis and severe accidents. The code`s targeted applications include support for containment-related experimental programs, light water and advanced light water reactor plant analysis, and analytical support for resolution of specific technical issues such as direct containment heating. The NRC decided that a broad technical review of the code should be performed by technical experts to determine its overall technical adequacy. For this purpose, a six-member CONTAIN Peer Review Committee was organized and a peer review as conducted. While the review was in progress, the NRC issued a draft ``Revised Severe Accident Code Strategy`` that incorporated revised design objectives and targeted applications for the CONTAIN code. The committee continued its effort to develop findings relative to the original NRC statement of design objectives and targeted applications. However, the revised CONTAIN design objectives and targeted applications. However, the revised CONTAIN design objectives and targeted applications were considered by the Committee in assigning priorities to the Committee`s recommendations. The Committee determined some improvements are warranted and provided recommendations in five code-related areas: (1) documentation, (2) user guidance, (3) modeling capability, (4) code assessment, and (5) technical assessment.

Exclusive Preferential Placement as Search Diversion: Evidence from Flight Search

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We analyze the incentives for a two-sided intermediary to divert consumers to its favored destinations. Using a quasi-experiment to control for search intent, we identify and measure the impact of a search engines exclusive award of preferential placement to its own service. We find that Googles differential placement of its Flight Search service led to a 65 % decrease in click-through rates for non-paid algorithmic links and an 85 % increase in click-through rates for paid advertising listings of competing online travel agencies. Moreover, the exclusive integration of search engine services into search results disproportionately impacted traffic to popular sites.

ORISE: Scientific Peer Review Planning

NLE Websites -- All DOE Office Websites (Extended Search)

Planning Planning Woman participating in a peer review The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) begins the peer review planning process by analyzing the purpose of the funds to be distributed. Because each agency's needs are different, ORISE then designs and manages a flexible, scientific peer review process that can be modified based on a sponsor's regulatory, policy and operational requirements. ORISE's existing tools and systems, and knowledge of reviewing proposals from a government agency perspective, are helping to promote the quality and credibility of scientific information and funded research. ORISE's peer review planning process ensures each objective review is completed on schedule, within budget and with a high degree of process integrity.

AntBot: Anti-pollution peer-to-peer botnets

SciTech Connect

Botnets, which are responsible for many email sparnming and DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks in the current Internet, have emerged as one of most severe cyber-threats in recent years. To evade detection and improve resistance against countermeasures, botnets have evolved from the first generation that relies on IRC chat channels to deliver commands to the current generation that uses highly resilient P2P (Peer-to-Peer) protocols to spread their C&C (Command and Control) information. It is, however, revealed that P2P botnets, although relieved from the single point of failure that IRC botnets suffer, can be easily disrupted using pollution-based mitigation schemes [15]. In this paper, we play the devil's advocate and propose a new type of hypothetical botnets called AntBot, which aim to propagate their C&C information to individual bots even though there exists an adversary that persistently pollutes keys used by seized bots to search the command information. The key idea of AntBot is a tree-like structure that bots use to deliver the command so that captured bots reveal only limited information. To evaluate effectiveness of AntBot against pollution-based mitigation in a virtual environment, we develop a distributed P2P botnet simulator. Using extensive experiments, we demonstrate that AntBot operates resiliently against pollution-based mitigation. We further present a few potential defense schemes that could effectively disrupt AntBot operations.

2001 Discover Award Finalist, Transportation: Using “X-Ray Vision” to Study Fuel Spray Processes Inside Engines 2001 Discover Award Finalist, Transportation: Using “X-Ray Vision” to Study Fuel Spray Processes Inside Engines By using high-brilliance X-rays from Argonne’s Advanced Photon Source, researchers are able to obtain never-before-possible, time-resolved and quantitative information on the structure of gasoline and diesel fuel sprays at the very moment they enter the engine cylinder. Before the new “X-ray vision” technique, the portion of fuel sprays nearest the injector nozzle (the first one inch) had been too opaque for visible light to penetrate, leaving engine designers and manufacturers to guess at conditions inside the fuel spray. With such an innovation, we have paved the way to see directly inside an engine to study the complete range of fluid dynamics and chemistry of fuel sprays and fuel spray processes.
