  11. Proc. of the workshop on pushing the limits of RF superconductivity.

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Kim, K-J., Eyberger, C., editors

    2005-04-13

For three days in late September last year, some sixty experts in RF superconductivity from around the world came together at Argonne to discuss how to push the limits of RF superconductivity for particle accelerators. It was an intense workshop with in-depth presentations and ample discussions. There was added excitement due to the fact that, a few days before the workshop, the International Technology Recommendation Panel had decided in favor of superconducting technology for the International Linear Collider (ILC), the next major high-energy physics accelerator project. Superconducting RF technology is also important for other large accelerator projects that are either imminent or under active discussion at this time, such as the Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) for nuclear physics, energy recovery linacs (ERLs), and x-ray free-electron lasers. For these accelerators, the capability in maximum accelerating gradient and/or the Q value is essential to limit the length and/or operating cost of the accelerators. The technological progress of superconducting accelerators during the past two decades has been truly remarkable, both in low-frequency structures for acceleration of protons and ions as well as in high-frequency structures for electrons. The requirements of future accelerators demand an even higher level of performance. The topics of this workshop are therefore highly relevant and timely. The presentations given at the workshop contained authoritative reviews of the current state of the art as well as some original materials that previously had not been widely circulated. We therefore felt strongly that these materials should be put together in the form of a workshop proceeding. The outcome is this report, which consists of two parts: first, a collection of the scholarly papers prepared by some of the participants and second, copies of the viewgraphs of all presentations. The presentation viewgraphs, in full color, are also available from the Workshop Presentations link on the workshop's web page at http://www.aps.anl.gov/conferences/RFSCLimits/. I would like to thank all of the participants for their lively contributions to the workshop and to these proceedings, and Helen Edwards and Hasan Padamsee for their help in developing the workshop program. I also thank Cathy Eyberger, Kelly Jaje, and Renee Lanham for working very hard to take care of the administrative details, in particular Cathy for editing this report.

Purpose. The efficacy of drug-eluting balloons has been demonstrated in clinical trials. The drug predominantly used is paclitaxel because of its lipophilic properties and the rapid onset of action. The aim of the investigation was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of an alternative balloon coating with rapamycin that can be applied on site.MethodsThe balloon coating (3.0/18 and 3.0/12 mm, Cathy No. 4, Translumina GmbH) with rapamycin was conducted with a coating machine (Translumina GmbH). Concentrations were 2, 2 Multiplication-Sign 2, 3, and 4 %. Measurements regarding the amount of substance released to the vessel wall were carried out on explanted porcine coronaries by means of ultraviolet and visible-light spectroscopy. Inflation time varied between 30 and 120 s. The biological effect of the coating was evaluated in a porcine peripheral overstretch and stent implantation model. Results. The amount of rapamycin on the balloon surface ranged from 558 {+-} 108 {mu}g for the 2 % solution to 1,441 {+-} 228 {mu}g in the 4 % solution. An amount of 95 {+-} 63-193 {+-} 113 {mu}g was released into the vessel wall. The quantitative measurements of the angiographic examinations 4 weeks after treatment revealed a reduction of diameter stenosis from 20.6 {+-} 17.4 % in the control group to 11.6 {+-} 5.5 % in the drug-eluting balloon group. Conclusion. A balloon coating with rapamycin omitting an excipient is possible with a dose-adjustable coating machine. However, the biological effects are moderate, which make further optimization of the coating process and evaluation of appropriate excipients necessary.

  19. Proceedings of RIKEN BNL Research Center Workshop: P- and CP-odd Effects in Hot and Dense Matter

    2010-04-26

This volume contains the proceedings of the RBRC/CATHIE workshop on 'P- and CP-odd Effects in Hot and Dense Matter' held at the RIKEN-BNL Research Center on April 26-30, 2010. The workshop was triggered by the experimental observation of charge correlations in heavy ion collisions at RHIC, which were predicted to occur due to local parity violation (P- and CP-odd fluctuations) in hot and dense QCD matter. This experimental result excited a significant interest in the broad physics community, inspired a few alternative interpretations, and emphasized the need for a deeper understanding of the role of topology in QCD vacuum and in hot and dense quark-gluon matter. Topological effects in QCD are also closely related to a number of intriguing problems in condensed matter physics, cosmology and astrophysics. We therefore felt that a broad cross-disciplinary discussion of topological P- and CP-odd effects in various kinds of matter was urgently needed. Such a discussion became the subject of the workshop. Specific topics discussed at the workshop include the following: (1) The current experimental results on charge asymmetries at RHIC and the physical interpretations of the data; (2) Quantitative characterization of topological effects in QCD matter including both analytical (perturbative and non-perturbative using gauge/gravity duality) and numerical (lattice-QCD) calculations; (3) Topological effects in cosmology of the Early Universe (including baryogenesis and dark energy); (4) Topological effects in condensed matter physics (including graphene and superfiuids); and (5) Directions for the future experimental studies of P- and CP-odd effects at RHIC and elsewhere. We feel that the talks and intense discussions during the workshop were extremely useful, and resulted in new ideas in both theory and experiment. We hope that the workshop has contributed to the progress in understanding the role of topology in QCD and related fields. We thank all the speakers and participants, and express our gratitude to the event coordinator Pam Esposito for her hard work.

  20. National Geothermal Data System: Transforming the Discovery, Access, and Analytics of Data for Geothermal Exploration

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Patten, Kim

    2013-05-01

Compendium of Papers from the 38th Workshop on Geothermal Reservoir Engineering Stanford University, Stanford, California February 11-13, 2013 The National Geothermal Data System (NGDS) is a distributed, interoperable network of data collected from state geological surveys across all fifty states and the nations leading academic geothermal centers. The system serves as a platform for sharing consistent, reliable, geothermal-relevant technical data with users of all types, while supplying tools relevant for their work. As aggregated data supports new scientific findings, this content-rich linked data ultimately broadens the pool of knowledge available to promote discovery and development of commercial-scale geothermal energy production. Most of the up-front risks associated with geothermal development stem from exploration and characterization of subsurface resources. Wider access to distributed data will, therefore, result in lower costs for geothermal development. NGDS is on track to become fully operational by 2014 and will provide a platform for custom applications for accessing geothermal relevant data in the U.S. and abroad. It is being built on the U.S. Geoscience Information Network (USGIN) data integration framework to promote interoperability across the Earth sciences community. The basic structure of the NGDS employs state-of-the art informatics to advance geothermal knowledge. The following four papers comprising this Open-File Report are a compendium of presentations, from the 38th Annual Workshop on Geothermal Reservoir Engineering, taking place February 11-13, 2013 at Stanford University, Stanford, California. NGDS Geothermal Data Domain: Assessment of Geothermal Community Data Needs, outlines the efforts of a set of nationwide data providers to supply data for the NGDS. In particular, data acquisition, delivery, and methodology are discussed. The paper addresses the various types of data and metadata required and why simple links to existing data are insufficient for promoting geothermal exploration. Authors of this paper are Arlene Anderson, US DOE Geothermal Technologies Office, David Blackwell, Southern Methodist University (SMU), Cathy Chickering (SMU), Toni Boyd, Oregon Institute of Technologys GeoHeat Center, Roland Horne, Stanford University, Matthew MacKenzie, Uberity, Joe Moore, University of Utah, Duane Nickull, Uberity, Stephen Richard, Arizona Geological Survey, and Lisa Shevenell, University of Nevada, Reno. NGDS User Centered Design: Meeting the Needs of the Geothermal Community, discusses the user- centered design approach taken in the development of a user interface solution for the NGDS. The development process is research based, highly collaborative, and incorporates state-of-the-art practices to ensure a quality user interface for the widest and greatest utility. Authors of this paper are Harold Blackman, Boise State University, Suzanne Boyd, Anthro-Tech, Kim Patten, Arizona Geological Survey, and Sam Zheng, Siemens Corporate Research. Fueling Innovation and Adoption by Sharing Data on the DOE Geothermal Data Repository Node on the National Geothermal Data System, describes the motivation behind the development of the Geothermal Data Repository (GDR) and its role in the NGDS. This includes the benefits of using the GDR to share geothermal data of all types and DOEs data submission process. Authors of this paper are Jon Weers, National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Arlene Anderson, US DOE Geothermal Technologies Office. Finally, Developing the NGDS Adoption of CKAN for Domestic & International Data Deployment, provides an overview of the Node-In-A-Box software package designed to provide data consumers with a highly functional interface to access the system, and to ease the burden on data providers who wish to publish data in the system. It is important to note that this software package constitutes a reference implementation and that the NGDS architecture is based on open standards, which means other server software can make resources available, and other client applications can utilize NGDS data. Authors of this paper are Ryan Clark, Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS), Christoph Kuhmuench, Siemens Corporate Research, and Stephen Richard, AZGS.

  1. Superacid catalysis of light hydrocarbon conversion. DOE PETC fourth quarterly report, May 25, 1994--August 24, 1994

    SciTech Connect (OSTI)

    Gates, B.C.

    1995-12-31

The primary goal of this project is to evaluate the potential value of solid superacid catalysts of the sulfated zirconia type for light hydrocarbon conversion. The key experiments include testing of the performance of such catalysts in a flow reactor fed with streams containing, for example, n-butane or propane. A solid superacid catalyst was prepared by addition of iron and manganese to sulfated zirconium hydroxide followed by calcination. The catalyst was tested for n-butane conversion in a packed-bed flow reactor at temperatures of 40 to 225{degrees}C with the reactant partial pressure in the range of 0.0025-0.01 attn. The predominant catalytic reaction was n-butane isomerization, and this was accompanied at 40{degrees}C by near stoichiometric disproportionation. The C3/C5 molar ratio was generally greater than 1, consistent with conversion of the secondary C5 products. As the temperature increased, the selectivity for isomerization decreased and that for disproportionation increased. In a typical experiment the activity of the catalyst increased for about 1 h on stream and then declined rapidly. The rate maxima as a function of time on stream were taken as a measure of the initial activity of the catalyst. For example, the approximate rate of isomerization of n-butane at the maximum was 4.3 x 10-8 mol/(g of catalyst {center_dot} s) with a feed n-butane partial pressure of 0.0025 atm at 75{degrees}C. With a feed n-butane partial pressure of 0.005 atm at 40{degrees}C and a conversion of 1 1%, the molar ratio of propane to i-butane was 0.03, and with the same feed composition at 100{degrees}C, this ratio at a conversion of 50% was 0.1. The iron- and manganese-promoted solid superacid catalyst is potentially of value for practical low-temperature paraffin isomerization accompanied by disproportionation of n-butane.

Conference Grant Report July 14, 2015 Submitted to the U. S. Department of Energy Attn: Dr. Sean Finnegan By the University of California, San Diego 9500 Gilman Drive La Jolla, California 92093 On behalf of the 44th Annual Anomalous Absorption Conference 8-13 June 2014, in Estes Park, Colorado Support Requested: $10,100 Amount expended: $3,216.14 Performance Period: 1 March 20 14 to 28 February 20 15 Principal Investigator Dr. Farhat Beg Center for Energy Research University of California, San Diego 9500 Gilman Drive La Jolla, California 92093-0417 858-822-1266 (telephone) 858-534-4543 (fax) fbeg@ucsd.edu Administrative Point of Contact: Brandi Pate, 858-534-0851, blpate®ucsd.edu I. Background The forty-fourth Anomalous Absorption Conference was held in Estes Park, Colorado from June 5-8, 2014 (aac2014.ucsd.edu). The first Anomalous Absorption Conference was held in 1971 to assemble experts in the poorly understood area of laser-plasma absorption. The goal of that conference was to address the anomalously large laser absorption seen in plasma experiments with respect to the laser absorption predicted by linear plasma theory. Great progress in this research area has been made in the decades since that first meeting, due in part to the scientific interactions that have occurred annually at this conference. Specifically, this includes the development of nonlinear laser-plasma theory and the simulation of laser interactions with plasmas. Each summer since that first meeting, this week-long conference has been held at unique locations in North America as a scientific forum for intense scientific exchanges relevant to the interaction of laser radiation with plasmas. Responsibility for organizing the conference has traditional rotated each year between the major Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) laboratories and universities including LANL, LLNL, LLE, UCLA UC Davis and NRL. As the conference has matured over the past four decades, its technical footprint has expanded beyond ICF-related laser-plasma interactions to encompass closely related technical areas including laser particle acceleration, high-intensity laser effects, short pulse laser interactions, PIC and Vlasov/rad-hydro modeling, inertial and magnetic fusion plasmas, advanced plasma diagnostics, alternate ignition schemes, EOS/transport/opacity, and this year, x ray free-electron lasers and their applications. The conference continues to be a showcase for the presentation and discussion of the latest developments in these areas. II. Meeting Report The conference was extremely successful with more than one hundred participants. There were ninety-nine (99) abstracts submitted. There were forty-four (44) presentations including eleven (11) invited talks. The following topics were covered: a) Radiation Hydrodynamics b) Implosion Plasma Kinetic Effects c) Alternate Ignition Schemes d) Astrophysical Phenomena e) Opacity/Transport/EOS f) High Power Lasers and Facilities g) High-Intensity Laser-Matter Interactions h) Hydrodynamics and Hydro-instabilities i) Hot Dense Plasma Atomic Processes j) High Energy Density Physics k) Laser Particle Acceleration Physics l) Advanced Plasma Diagnostics m) Advanced light sources and applications Despite significant advertising, there were two students who applied for the travel grants: Charlie Jarrott and Joohwan Kim. The total funds expended were $3,216.14.

  3. QER- Comment of Jeff Cobb 2

    Broader source: Energy.gov [DOE]

Hello, Please also see the letter after my signature at the bottom. I was at the unitization hearing for the Helis Oil planned fracking operation in St. Tammany Parish. I refrained from speaking, because I do not live in St. Tammany. I wish to affirm my support for everything said at that hearing in opposition to the unitization permit, and everything relayed to the Army Corps of Engineers regarding the wetlands permit opposing it. As well as opposition to fracking not only in St Tammany, but anywhere in the world, for the multiple reasons I outline below. Primarily I'm opposed because the Texas Railroad Commission has conducted a study that shows conclusively that water wells located near fracking operations in the Barnett Shale have been contaminated with hyropcarbons that could ONLY have come from the Barnett Shale. Given that the Southern Hills Aquifer is the sole source aquifer for Baton Rouge as well as hundreds of thousands of other people in southeastern Louisiana including much if not all of St Tammany Parish, and the recent Legislative Auditors report showing DNR's regulation of thousands of oil and gas wells is negligent, allowing any drilling in ANY sole source aquifer is an accident waiting to happen, with repercussions lasting centuries. The World Bank is in agreement with other global experts such as PricewaterhouseCoopers that only 20% of the known fossil fuel reserves can be burned (http://blogs.worldbank.org/climatechange/carbon-bubbles-stranded-assets.) This means the remaining 80% of reserves are stranded assets, resulting in a carbon bubble in the investment market. The biggest of the Big Five global accounting firms, PricewaterhouseCoopers agrees with this in their report, 'Too Late for Two Degrees?' (http://www.pwc.co.uk/sustainability-climate-change/publications/low-carb...). ExxonMobil has recognized this carbon bubble risk, and then dismissed it (http://corporate.exxonmobil.com/en/environment/climate-change/managing-c...). Which is like an alcoholic admitting their addiction, and then saying 'but my continued drinking of alcohol is necessary'. Denial is the most seductive whore in the human psyche. All nations in the UN agreed to keep global warming driven mostly by the burning of fossil fuels below 2 degrees C in 2009. We are currently on track for 3-4 degrees C warming, perhaps higher. We have already identified fossil fuel reserves containing 2,795 gigatons of carbon (www.carbontracker.org), while we can only burn 565 gigatons of carbon to stay below the agreed upon 2 degrees C target (https://www.pik-potsdam.de/news/press-releases/archive/2009/on-the-way-t...). As we have five times more identified reserves than we can burn, the search for more is an exercise in futility. Although EPA has conducted two major studies linking well water contamination to fracking in both Pavilion, Wyoming and Dimock, Pennsylvania, this study by the Texas Railroad Commission is the most definitive to date (http://www.earthworksaction.org/media/detail/scientists_fracking_pollute...). Lower level EPA employees were told to discontinue and/or bury the results of those two studies, no doubt because higher level EPA employees were paid by the fossil fuel industry to hide the ugly truth that fossil fuels knew from the beginning. Louisiana already has some of the most polluted water in the US (http://www.nola.com/business/index.ssf/2014/06/louisiana_waterways_among...), as described in "Wasting Our Waterways: Toxic Industrial Pollution and Restoring the Promise of the Clean Water Act" (http://environmentamericacenter.org/sites/environment/files/reports/US_w...). Continued oil and gas activities, and particularly fracking which requires millions of gallons of water, and the 'produced' water that results which is too polluted and poisoned with benzenes, brine, and radioactive materials to be purified, must be stopped ASAP. The entire energy infrastructure for the planet needs to be upgraded to the supergrid and moved to renewables. Needless to say, after the Legislative Auditors Report it is clear that Louisiana can't be trusted to guard our health any better than Pennsylvania. "Pennsylvania has had more than 6,000 hydraulic fracturing wells drilled within the last six years, and zero state studies on their health impacts. In Pennsylvania, and near fracking operations across the country, people have won settlements from fossil fuel companies after being sickened. In many cases the drilling company imposes a gag order to prevent sickened people from spreading the word about what caused their illness and building the case that fracking has negative health effects." (http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2014/06/20/3451311/pennsylvania-frack-g...) Although the argument is often made that fracking is igniting an economic boom, climate change will wipe away any benefits, exaggerated as these benefits are certain to be. A new economic model shows risks from climate change are bigger than previously estimated, according to former chief economist for the World Bank, Sir Lord Nicholas Stern, who was knighted for his 2006 "Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change." (http://www.lse.ac.uk/GranthamInstitute/news/dietz_stern_june2014/) Given the Legislative Auditors recent report on oil and gas wells, I have no faith in any part of the Louisiana government to regulate oil and gas activities of any kind, on any scale. Particularly as the Southern Hills Aquifer is the sole source aquifer for hundreds of thousands of people, including myself. Due to the carbon budget for the planet, we need to move away from fossil fuels and switch to clean renewable energy sources as soon as possible, which will help avoid some of the economic impacts mentioned above, as well as prevent even more poisoned water, air, and land due to oil and gas activities. Therefore I oppose any and all permits for any fossil fuel activities in the state of Louisiana. If you join the fight against climate change, that's what you'll get to say. - Bill McKibben Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Attn: Chris Davis Re: Louisiana Natural and Scenic Rivers System Permit Applications # 896 & 902 Dear Mr. Davis, I am writing to request a public hearing on the two permits shown above. Both of these are vital natural Louisiana scenic river resources. As such, both are enjoyed by many citizens in our extended community. The thought of allowing fresh water to be pulled out of these rivers in such large quantities to satisfy the needs of large corporate industrial projects that will pollute the water to such a degree that it can never be safely returned to the eco-system is abhorrent. According to Wilma Subra*, the early phases of production after fracking, the produced water flows to the surface mixed with flowback water. The produced water is disposed of in injection/disposal wells. The produced water contains toxic chemical contaminants: volatile organic compounds, such as benzene, ethyl benzene, toluene and xylene semi-volatile organic compound such as naphthalene, phenanthrene heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead sulfur containing compounds NORM Radioactive Radium 226, Radium 228 and Uranium 238 These are only the first permits of what will become literally, thousands, should you allow this activity. I ask you to mindfully consider the impact of thousands of hydrofracturing wells in our area, depleting water supplies at alarming rates. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. I look forward to hearing from you regarding public hearings on these permit requests. Additionally, I would like to request a full Environmental Impact Statement regarding the use of our scenic rivers for such activity.
