Says Monteiro, "It's not that modern concrete isn't good, but manufacturing Portland cement accounts for seven percent of the carbon dioxide that industry puts into the air." The carbon footprint of Roman concrete, made from lime, volcanic ash, and seawater, is much smaller.

The students were led by science and technology teacher Christine Mytko, who spent the past summer at the ALS through the Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education (IISME) program. Mytko's time at the ALS was focused on 3D imaging and printing techniques. An integral part of the ISME program is educators taking their experiences back to the classroom through new curriculum development. As such, Mytko put together a program that would engage her students in collaborative proposal process similar to a typical ALS user proposal. Students worked in groups to craft proposals for scanning items of interest at the tomography beamline, a selection of which were chosen through a peer-review process and then scanned at Beamline 8.3.2. ALS beamline scientist Dula Parkinson worked with Mytko to develop the program and gave feedback on the kids' proposal, which Mytko says was thrilling for her students.

The ATLAS Experiment on YouTube

DOE Data Explorer (OSTI)

ATLAS is a particle physics experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The ATLAS detector is searching for new discoveries in the head-on collisions of protons of extraordinarily high energy. ATLAS will learn about the basic forces that have shaped our Universe since the beginning of time and that will determine its fate. Among the possible unknowns are the origin of mass, extra dimensions of space, unification of fundamental forces, and evidence for dark matter candidates in the Universe [copied from http://atlas.ch/]. Approximately 700 physicists, engineers and graduate students from 44 U.S. institutions, including four DOE laboratories, participate in the ATLAS collaboration. In addition to the Collaboration's home page and numerous ATLAS-related pages at the various research organizations involved, there are two primary ATLAS websites that provide the full range of information about this experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in at CERN, Switzerland. The main ATLAS Experiment page hosted by CERN is found at http://atlas.ch/, while the home page specifically for the U.S. contribution to ATLAS is at http://www.uslhc.us/The_US_and_the_LHC/Experiments/ATLAS. Likewise, videos and multimedia from the inception and construction of ATLAS and continuing on through current operations and scientific discoveries are found everywhere from Brookhaven Lab to YouTube to an official collection at the ATLAS Experiment page at CERN. Hanford Site Videos on YouTube

DOE Data Explorer (OSTI)

For more than forty years, reactors located at Hanford produced plutonium for America's defense program. The process of making plutonium is extremely inefficient in that a massive amount of liquid and solid waste is generated while only a small amount of plutonium is produced. Additionally, all of the facilities and structures that were associated with Hanford's defense mission must also be deactivated, decommissioned, decontaminated, and demolished. That environmental cleanup project is the work that approximately 11,000 Hanford employees are involved with today [copied from http://www.hanford.gov/page.cfm/HanfordsPresentMission]. Snapshots of the work, the issues, and the cleanup successes can be seen on the Hanford Site's YouTube channel. Short clips illustrate demolition projects, installtion of components such as a liner for the landfill, events such as the site fire in 2007 and Secretary of Energy Chu's visit in 2010. Recovery Act Work is highlighted as well.

The Impact of YouTube Recommendation System on Video Views

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Hosting a collection of millions of videos, YouTube offers several features to help users discover the videos of their interest. For example, YouTube provides video search, related video recommendation and front page highlight. The understanding of how these features drive video views is useful for creating a strategy to drive video popularity. In this paper, we perform a measurement study on data sets crawled from YouTube and find that the related video recommendation, which recommends the videos that are related to the video a user is watching, is one of the most important view sources of videos. Despite the fact that the YouTube video search is the number one source of views in aggregation, the related video recommendation is the main source of views for the majority of the videos on YouTube. Furthermore, our results reveal that there is a strong correlation between the view count of a video and the average view count of its top referrer videos. This implies that a video has a higher chance to become popular when it is placed on the related video recommendation lists of popular videos. We also find that the click through rate from a video to its related videos is high and the position of a video in a related video list plays a critical role in the click through rate. Finally, our evaluation of the impact of the related video recommendation system on the diversity of video views indicates that the current recommendation system helps to increase the diversity of video views in aggregation.

Bibliometrics for Internet Media: Applying the h-Index to YouTube

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The h-index can be a useful metric for evaluating a person's output of Internet media. Here we advocate and demonstrate adaption of the h-index and the g-index to the top video content creators on YouTube. The h-index for Internet video media is based on videos and their view counts. The index h is defined as the number of videos with >= h*10^5 views. The index g is defined as the number of videos with >= g*10^5 views on average. When compared to a video creator's total view count, the h-index and g-index better capture both productivity and impact in a single metric.

Identifying video spammers in online social networks

E-Print Network (OSTI)

In many video social networks, including YouTube, users are permitted to post video responses to other users ’ videos. Such a response can be legitimate or can be a video response spam, which is a video response whose content is not related to the topic being discussed. Malicious users may post video response spam for several reasons, including increase the popularity of a video, marketing advertisements, distribute pornography, or simply pollute the system. In this paper we consider the problem of detecting video spammers. We first construct a large test collection of YouTube users, and manually classify them as either legitimate users or spammers. We then devise a number of attributes of video users and their social behavior which could potentially be used to detect spammers. Employing these attributes, we apply machine learning to provide a heuristic for classifying an arbitrary video as either legitimate or spam. The machine learning algorithm is trained with our test collection. We then show that our approach succeeds at detecting much of the spam while only falsely classifying a small percentage of the legitimate videos as spam. Our results highlight the most important attributes for video response spam detection.

Catching a viral video

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Abstract—The sharing and re-sharing of videos on social sites, blogs e-mail, and other means has given rise to the phenomenon of viral videos – videos that become popular through internet sharing. In this paper we seek to better understand viral videos on YouTube by analyzing sharing and its relationship to video popularity using 1.5 million YouTube videos. The socialness of a video is quantified by classifying the referrer sources for video views as social (e.g. an emailed link) or non-social (e.g. a link from related videos). By segmenting videos according to their fraction of social views, we find that viewership patterns of highly social videos is very different than less social videos. For example, the highly social videos rise to, and fall from, their peak popularity more quickly than less social videos. We also find that not all highly social videos become popular, and not all popular videos are highly social.

The Jordan Aha! Test for Visualizations The Jordan Aha! Test for Visualizations by Sharon Jordan on Wed, 24 Mar, 2010 It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Such is the justification and hope for visualizations. Examples of enlightening visualizations are structural models of molecules like the carbon-60 Bucky Ball used in OSTI's recent YouTube video. The model shows a carbon atom at each intersection of molecular bonds. Another example of an enlightening visualization is Charles Joseph Minard's famous graph showing the decreasing size of Napoleon's army as it marches to Moscow and back with the size of the army equal to the width of the line. Visualizations are often beautiful, but to be useful they must also convey a message. At OSTI, we have adopted what has come to be called the

(He also posted a picture of himself as a zombie, which is also is very scary!) Energy vampires are appliances that even when turned off utilize a small amount of electricity, called phantom loads. According to this YouTube video posted by GOOD, Americans waste approximately one month's electricity bill each year on vampire energy. Some estimates suggest that Americans have anywhere between 20-40 vampire devices throughout their homes. I recently surveyed my apartment and found

Scientific and Technical Videos at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL)

DOE Data Explorer (OSTI)

NETL addresses the challenges put forth by the National Energy Policy: 1) Enhance America's energy security; 2)Improve the environmental acceptability of energy production and use; 3) Increase the competitiveness and reliability of U.S. energy systems; 4) Ensure a robust U.S. energy future. NETL is unique among DOE national laboratories in both its mission and its approach to achieving that mission. First, the Laboratory is federally owned and operated, a departure from the contractor-operated model that is the norm within the DOE laboratory system. Second, NETL devotes the majority of its funding to R&D partnerships with industry, university, and other government entities, work that is augmented by onsite research in the areas of computational and basic sciences, energy system dynamics, geological and environmental systems, and materials science [Copied from NETL's mission page at http://www.netl.doe.gov/about/mission.html]. NETL makes a collection of its videos available on YouTube, but there is also a group of lab-produced videos on the NewsRoom page of the laboratory. Videos on zero emissions power plants, on carbon sequestration, on gasification, on fuel cells, microbes in soils, and more illustrate the range of research and expertise demonstrated at NETL.

Flow Control of Real Time Multimedia Applications Using Model Predictive Control with a Feed Forward Term

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Multimedia applications over the Internet are getting more and more popular. While non-real-time streaming services, such as YouTube and Megavideo, are attracting millions of visiting per day, real-time conferencing applications, of which some instances are Skype and Yahoo Voice Chat, provide an interesting experience of communication. Together, they make the fancy Internet world become more and more amusing. Undoubtedly, multimedia flows will eventually dominate the computer network in the future. As the population of multimedia flows increases gradually on the Internet, quality of their service (QoS) is more of a concern. At the moment, the Internet does not have any guarantee on the quality of multimedia services. To completely surpass this limitation, modifications to the network structure is a must. However, it will take years and billions of dollars in investment to achieve this goal. Meanwhile, it is essential to find alternative ways to improve the quality of multimedia services over the Internet. In the past few years, many endeavors have been carried on to solve the problem. One interesting approach focuses on the development of end-to-end congestion control strategies for UDP multimedia flows. Traditionally, packet losses and delays have been commonly used to develop many known control schemes. Each of them only characterizes some different aspects of network congestion; hence, they are not ideal as feedback signals alone. In this research, the flow accumulation is the signal used in feedback for flow control. It has the advantage of reflecting both packet losses and delays; therefore, it is a better choice. Using network simulations, the accumulations of real-time audio applications are collected to construct adaptive flow controllers. The reason for choosing these applications is that they introduce more control challenges than non-real-time services. One promising flow control strategy was proposed by Bhattacharya and it was based on Model Predictive Control (MPC). The controller was constructed from an ARX predictor. It was demonstrated that this control scheme delivers a good QoS while reducing bandwidth use in the controlled flows by 31 percent to 44 percent. However, the controller sometime shows erratic response and bandwidth usage jumps frequently between lowest and highest values. This is not desirable. For an ideal controller, the controlled bandwidth should vary near its mean. To eliminate the deficiency in the strategy proposed by Bhattacharya, it is proposed to introduce a feed forward term into the MPC formulation, in addition to the feedback terms. Simulations show that the modified MPC strategy maintains the benefits of the Bhattacharya strategy. Furthermore, it increases the probability of bandwidth savings from 58 percent for the case of Bhattacharya model to about 99 percent for this work.

Community-Oriented Models and Applications for the Social Web

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The past few years have seen the rapid rise of all things "social" on the web from the growth of online social networks like Facebook, to user-contributed content sites like Flickr and YouTube, to social bookmarking services like Delicious, among many others. Whereas traditional approaches to organizing and accessing the web’s massive amount of information have focused on content-based and link-based approaches, these social systems offer rich opportunities for user-based and community-based exploration and analysis of the web by building on the unprecedented access to the interests and perspectives of millions of users. We focus here on the challenge of modeling and mining social bookmarking systems, in which resources are enriched by large-scale socially generated metadata (“tags”) and contextualized by the user communities that are associated with the resources. Our hypothesis is that an underlying social collective intelligence is embedded in the uncoordinated actions of users on social bookmarking services, and that this social collective intelligence can be leveraged for enhanced web-based information discovery and knowledge sharing. Concretely, we posit the existence of underlying implicit communities in these social bookmarking systems that drive the social bookmarking process which can provide a foundation for community-based organization of web resources. To that end, we make three contributions: • First, we propose a pair of novel probabilistic generative models for describing and modeling community-oriented social bookmarking. We show how these models enable effective extraction of meaningful communities over large real world social bookmarking services. • Second, we develop two frameworks for community-based web information browsing and search that are based on these community-oriented social bookmarking models. We show how both achieve improved discovery and exploration of the social web. • Third, we introduce a community evolution framework for studying and analyzing social bookmarking communities over time. We explore the temporal dimension of social bookmarking and explore the dynamics of community formation, evolution, and dissolution. By uncovering implicit communities, putting them to use in an application scenario (search and browsing), and analyzing them over time, this dissertation provides a foundation for the study of how social knowledge networks are self-organized, a deeper understanding and appreciation of the factors impacting collective intelligence, and the creation of new information access algorithms for leveraging these communities.

User Importance Modelling in Social Information Systems An Interaction Based Approach

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The past few years have seen the rapid rise of all things “social” on the web from the growth of online social networks like Facebook, to real-time communication services like Twitter, to user-contributed content sites like Flickr and YouTube, to content aggregators like Digg. Beyond these popular Web 2.0 successes, the emer- gence of Social Information Systems is promising to fundamentally transform what information we encounter and digest, how businesses market and engage with their customers, how universities educate and train a new generation of researchers, how the government investigates terror networks, and even how political regimes interact with their citizenry. Users have moved from being passive consumers of information (via querying or browsing) to becoming active participants in the creation of data and knowledge artifacts, actively sorting, ranking, and annotating other users and artifacts. This fundamental shift to social systems places new demands on providing de- pendable capabilities for knowing whom to trust and what information to trust, given the open and unregulated nature of these systems. The emergence of large-scale user participation in Social Information Systems suggests the need for the development of user-centric approaches to information quality. As a step in this direction this research proposes an interaction-based approach for modeling the notion of user im- portance. The interaction-based model is centered around the uniquely social aspects of these systems, by treating who communicates with whom (an interaction) as a core building block in evaluating user importance. We first study the interaction characteristics of Twitter, one of the most buzzworthy recent Social Web successes, examining the usage statistics, growth patterns, and user interaction behavior of over 2 million participants on Twitter. We believe this is the first large-scale study of dynamic interactions on a real-world Social Information System. Based on the anal- ysis of the interaction structure of Twitter, the second contribution of this thesis research is an exploration of approaches for measuring user importance. As part of this exploration, we study several different approaches that build on the inherent interaction-based framework of Social Information Systems. We explore this model through an experimental study over an interaction graph consisting of 800,000 nodes and about 1.9 million interaction edges. The user importance modeling approaches that we present can be applied to any Social Information System in which interactions between users can be monitored.
