Happy (But Cold) New Year Happy (But Cold) New Year Happy (But Cold) New Year January 11, 2011 - 5:50pm Addthis Drew Bittner Web Manager, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy It's gotten chilly in Washington, D.C., but that's probably old news to most of the country. I was thinking about it this morning, though, when there was a definite draft whistling from my bedroom windows. My family lives in a condo, so we have limited options for replacing the windows (that's more of a whole-building thing). What alternatives do we have besides turning up the heat (and blowing our electric bill out of the water)? Our tried-and-true remedy is one my father-in-law uses every year. He puts sheets of plastic wrap over the windows and tapes it closed with duct tape or something similar. It's an easy, cheap and quick way to block drafts.

They were perfect for cold winter nights, for "indoors camping" or just for sitting near and watching TV. There's very little like the crackle and heat of an open fire. That said, while your fireplace may be decorative, enjoyable, even functional, it's also one other thing: a great big hole going to the outdoors. Many families have glass doors across their fireplaces. That's a good start, but there's something else you should remember to do, and that is keep the chimney closed. It's more than just a good idea; hot air rises,

Summertime Energy Savings Summertime Energy Savings Summertime Energy Savings June 15, 2010 - 7:30am Addthis Drew Bittner Web Manager, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy I can't believe how fast winter gave way to summer. Seems like just yesterday we were digging out from Snowpocalypse here on the East Coast, dealing with mountains of the white stuff and wondering if we'd ever be out of the deep freeze. Well, now we are, and we have to make sure our homes and vehicles are ready for it. First off, a couple very basic energy efficiency tips: Close your curtains: sunlight, especially from east- or west-facing windows, can send our inside temperatures soaring, so close your curtains, blinds, what have you before you leave for work and open them again once the sun goes down. It'll help keep your cooling costs low.

One of the most common family traditions is listing the things for which we are thankful. These are mostly items such as "family," "friends" or "good health." We live in a time where improvements in technology make it possible to live a happy, healthy, and productive life while using less and less energy.

We've talked about how to make your home energy efficient, how to diagnose your home's problems and how to fix them, what works best and what doesn't (depending on where you live and what kind of home you have). Time's come to ask: how did you do? Did you take what we've talked about and apply it to your own home, vehicle, or lifestyle? It's easy to agree with an idea-to read something on a blog like this or on a Web site or in your paper and think, "Yeah, that's a really good idea." The real test comes in putting it all into practice.

We've had many days above 90°F and July is plenty toasty too. So what does this mean? If you're like me, it means your electricity bills are going up as you crank the air conditioning. Don't get me wrong, I love AC-I think it's one of the best inventions we've ever come up with-but the heavy use of it contributes to rolling blackouts and peak energy use that overloads the system. Not to mention, we pay more. What can you do? Luckily, there are some things you can do to help lower

Ordinarily, this isn't a major effort, but this was on the verge of the big snow storm on February 5. Naturally, we were a bit concerned about our travel prospects. I'm originally from Wisconsin and know what winter can do to a car and its passengers. That's why we took some care to prepare our car for what might have been truly horrifying driving. The tires on our car are new but we checked the air pressure anyway, just to be sure they were properly

January 12, 2010 - 10:21am Addthis Drew Bittner Web Manager, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Both of my childhood homes featured fireplaces. If you've had one, you know how terrific they can be-great places to bask on cold winter nights, an easy opportunity to toast marshmallows, picturesque, undeniably a pleasure in the house that has one. However, fireplaces have chimneys...and chimneys can be problems when it comes to home energy efficiency. For one thing, many people do not take care to close their chimney flue when there is no fire. This means warm air has an easy exit from your home; you have a big hole in your roof, after all, and warm air will take advantage of that. Ditto cold air in the
