Limits to the muon flux from neutralino annihilations in the Sun with the AMANDA detector

E-Print Network (OSTI)

A search for an excess of muon-neutrinos from neutralino annihilations in the Sun has been performed with the AMANDA-II neutrino detector using data collected in 143.7 days of live-time in 2001. No excess over the expected atmospheric neutrino background has been observed. An upper limit at 90% confidence level has been obtained on the annihilation rate of captured neutralinos in the Sun, as well as the corresponding muon flux limit at the Earth, both as functions of the neutralino mass in the range 100 GeV-5000 GeV.

Search for Ultra High-Energy Neutrinos with AMANDA-II

SciTech Connect

A search for diffuse neutrinos with energies in excess of 10{sup 5} GeV is conducted with AMANDA-II data recorded between 2000 and 2002. Above 10{sup 7} GeV, the Earth is essentially opaque to neutrinos. This fact, combined with the limited overburden of the AMANDA-II detector (roughly 1.5 km), concentrates these ultra high-energy neutrinos at the horizon. The primary background for this analysis is bundles of downgoing, high-energy muons from the interaction of cosmic rays in the atmosphere. No statistically significant excess above the expected background is seen in the data, and an upper limit is set on the diffuse all-flavor neutrino flux of E{sup 2} {Phi}{sub 90%CL} < 2.7 x 10{sup -7} GeV cm{sup -2}s{sup -1} sr{sup -1} valid over the energy range of 2 x 10{sup 5} GeV to 10{sup 9} GeV. A number of models which predict neutrino fluxes from active galactic nuclei are excluded at the 90% confidence level.

A Search for High-energy Muon Neutrinos from the Galactic Plane with AMANDA-II

E-Print Network (OSTI)

Interactions of cosmic rays with the galactic interstellar medium produce high-energy neutrinos through the decay of charged pions and kaons. We report on a search with the AMANDA-II detector for muon neutrinos from the region of the galactic plane below the horizon from the South Pole (33 degrees muon neutrino events. No excess of events was observed. For a spectrum of E^{-2.7} and Gaussian spatial distribution (sigma = 2.1 degrees) around the galactic equator, we calculate a flux limit of 4.8 x 10^{-4} GeV^{-1} cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1} in the energy range from 0.2 to 40 TeV.

Search for point sources of high energy neutrinos with final data from AMANDA-II

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

We present a search for point sources of high energy neutrinos using 3.8yr of data recorded by AMANDA-II during 20002006. After reconstructing muon tracks and applying selection criteria designed to optimally retain neutrino-induced events originating in the northern sky, we arrive at a sample of 6595 candidate events, predominantly from atmospheric neutrinos with primary energy 100GeV to 8TeV. Our search of this sample reveals no indications of a neutrino point source. We place the most stringent limits to date on E-2 neutrino fluxes from points in the northern sky, with an average upper limit of E2???+???5.210-11??TeV?cm-2?s-1 on the sum of ?? and ?? fluxes, assumed equal, over the energy range from 1.9TeV to 2.5PeV.

Warmer temperatures and minimal snowfall totals have many hoping for an early spring. February on the east coast has been like a roller coaster ride, with temperatures plunging one day, then warm enough the next to skip the coat. In my home, I've spent the month trying to predict the ups and downs of the weather by adjusting my heater constantly. It's tempting to leave the thermostat on at a set temperature, so that the room is warm when returning home. Many assume this saves energy, because the heater won't have to work as hard to heat the room to the desired

Ways to Save Energy Ways to Save Energy Cool Ways to Save Energy July 19, 2012 - 12:32pm Addthis Amanda McAlpin So you've just bought a new fridge, and chosen one that's energy efficient, but did you know that there are a few simple things you can do to save even more energy once you get it home? The way you use your refrigerator and freezer can lead to big energy savings for you and your family. First, when choosing a refrigerator, be sure to select the right size. Determine your household's needs before purchasing a refrigerator or freezer. One that is too large wastes energy. Second, don't set the temperature colder than necessary. Refrigerators should be set between 36 and 38 degrees Fahrenheit, and freezers between 0 and 5 degrees. Keeping your refrigerator and freezer full can also help

The colorful gift wrap loses energy through production, shipment and storage; a thought that is not exactly glittering. In fact, each ream of paper takes approximately the energy equivalent of 2 gallons of gasoline to produce. A few years ago I realized how much wrapping paper is wasted during the holidays and made a personal quest to no longer purchase any more of the festive paper. It was a challenge, but I knew I was saving a lot of energy and money, and I was no longer contributing to deforestation. I had to

Search for extraterrestrial point sources of high energy neutrinos with AMANDA-II using data collected in 20002002

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The results of a search for point sources of high energy neutrinos in the northern hemisphere using data collected by AMANDA-II in the years 2000, 2001, and 2002 are presented. In particular, a comparison with the single-year result previously published shows that the sensitivity was improved by a factor of 2.2. The muon neutrino flux upper limits on selected candidate sources, corresponding to an E?-2 neutrino energy spectrum, are included. Sky grids were used to search for possible excesses above the background of cosmic ray induced atmospheric neutrinos. This search reveals no statistically significant excess for the three years considered.

The Energy Spectrum of Atmospheric Neutrinos between 2 and 200 TeV with the AMANDA-II Detector

SciTech Connect

The muon and anti-muon neutrino energy spectrum is determined from 2000-2003 AMANDA telescope data using regularised unfolding. This is the first measurement of atmospheric neutrinos in the energy range 2-200 TeV. The result is compared to different atmospheric neutrino models and it is compatible with the atmospheric neutrinos from pion and kaon decays. No significant contribution from charm hadron decays or extraterrestrial neutrinos is detected. The capabilities to improve the measurement of the neutrino spectrum with the successor experiment IceCube are discussed.

Multiyear search for dark matter annihilations in the Sun with the AMANDA-II and IceCube detectors

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

A search for an excess of muon neutrinos from dark matter annihilations in the Sun has been performed with the AMANDA-II neutrino telescope using data collected in 812 days of live time between 2001 and 2006 and 149 days of live time collected with the AMANDA-II and the 40-string configuration of IceCube during 2008 and early 2009. No excess over the expected atmospheric neutrino background has been observed. We combine these results with the previously published IceCube limits obtained with data taken during 2007 to obtain a total live time of 1065 days. We provide an upper limit at 90% confidence level on the annihilation rate of captured neutralinos in the Sun, as well as the corresponding muon flux limit at the Earth, both as functions of the neutralino mass in the range 505000GeV. We also derive a limit on the neutralino-proton spin-dependent and spin-independent cross section. The limits presented here improve the previous results obtained by the collaboration between a factor of 2 and 5, as well as extending the neutralino masses probed down to 50GeV. The spin-dependent cross section limits are the most stringent so far for neutralino masses above 200GeV, and well below direct search results in the mass range from 50GeV to 5TeV.

Searches for High-energy Neutrino Emission in the Galaxy with the Combined ICECUBE-AMANDA Detector

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

We report on searches for neutrino sources at energies above 200GeV in the Northern sky of the Galactic plane, using the data collected by the South Pole neutrino telescope, IceCube, and AMANDA. The Galactic region considered in this work includes the local arm toward the Cygnus region and our closest approach to the Perseus Arm. The searches are based on the data collected between 2007 and 2009. During this time AMANDA was an integrated part of IceCube, which was still under construction and operated with 22 strings (2007-2008) and 40 strings (2008-2009) of optical modules deployed in the ice. By combining the advantages of the larger IceCube detector with the lower energy threshold of the more compact AMANDA detector, we obtain an improved sensitivity at energies below ~10TeV with respect to previous searches. The analyses presented here are a scan for point sources within the Galactic plane, a search optimized for multiple and extended sources in the Cygnus region, which might be below the sensitivity of the point source scan, and studies of seven pre-selected neutrino source candidates. For one of them, Cygnus X-3, a time-dependent search for neutrino emission in coincidence with observed radio and X-ray flares has been performed. No evidence of a signal is found, and upper limits are reported for each of the searches. We investigate neutrino spectra proportional to E 2 and E 3 in order to cover the entire range of possible neutrino spectra. The steeply falling E 3 neutrino spectrum can also be used to approximate neutrino energy spectra with energy cutoffs below 50TeV since these result in a similar energy distribution of events in the detector. For the region of the Galactic plane visible in the Northern sky, the 90% confidence level muon neutrino flux upper limits are in the range E 3 dN/dE ~ 5.4-19.5 ? 1011 TeV2 cm2 s1 for point-like neutrino sources in the energy region [180.0GeV-20.5TeV]. These represent the most stringent upper limits for soft-spectra neutrino sources within the Galaxy reported to date.

Search for High Energy Neutrino Emission from Gamma-Ray Bursts with the A ntarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA)

E-Print Network (OSTI)

The photo-meson production of pions by shock-accelerated protons could generate a burst of ~10^14 eV neutrinos from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observable in the Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA) or its larger successors. Measurement of this flux can test the hypothesis that GRBs are the sources of the highest-energy cosmic rays, and GRB neutrinos could permit high-precision experiments in neutrino limiting speed, neutrino oscillations, and the weak equivalence principle. Neutrino emission can be expected primarily during the prompt gamma-ray flash and satellite coincidence provides a well-defined window in position and time that can be searched for an excess of upgoing muon events in AMANDA from bursts in the Northern Hemisphere. Using an event quality analysis to further reduce background in a sample of 78 GRBs from the 1997 AMANDA-B10 data set, I find a fluence limit of (E_nu)^2 (dN_nu)/(dE_nu)<3.8*10^-4 min(1,E_nu/E_break) [TeV cm^-2] per average burst, which is orders of magnitude more stringent than in similar previous searches.

Watching them is always inspiring and energizing to me. It's motivation to go to the gym, learn something new, or revisit my own goals. Saving energy has always been an important goal for me, but it can be easy to lose be less mindful of it as I go about my daily life. Why not use this time to set some new energy goals for yourself, or to revisit the some old habits. Remind yourself of the little things you do every day to save energy, the habits that might have gotten a little lax with time. Do you still turn off the lights when you leave a room? Limits on the high-energy gamma and neutrino fluxes from the SGR 1806-20 giant flare of December 27th, 2004 with the AMANDA-II detector

E-Print Network (OSTI)

On December 27th 2004, a giant gamma flare from the Soft Gamma-ray Repeater 1806-20 saturated many satellite gamma-ray detectors. This event was by more than two orders of magnitude the brightest cosmic transient ever observed. If the gamma emission extends up to TeV energies with a hard power law energy spectrum, photo-produced muons could be observed in surface and underground arrays. Moreover, high-energy neutrinos could have been produced during the SGR giant flare if there were substantial baryonic outflow from the magnetar. These high-energy neutrinos would have also produced muons in an underground array. AMANDA-II was used to search for downgoing muons indicative of high-energy gammas and/or neutrinos. The data revealed no significant signal. The upper limit on the gamma flux at 90% CL is dN/dE energy neutrino emission of 0.4 (6.1) TeV^-1 m^-2 s^-1 for gamma=-1.47 (-2).

High Energy Neutrinos from the Cold: Status and Prospects of the IceCube Experiment

SciTech Connect

The primary motivation for building neutrino telescopes is to open the road for neutrino astronomy, and to offer another observational window for the study of cosmic ray origins. Other physics topics, such as the search for WIMPs, can also be developed with neutrino telescope. As of March 2008, the IceCube detector, with half of its strings deployed, is the world largest neutrino telescope taking data to date and it will reach its completion in 2011. Data taken with the growing detector are being analyzed. The results of some of these works are summarized here. AMANDA has been successfully integrated into IceCube data acquisition system and continues to accumulate data. Results obtained using only AMANDA data taken between the years 2000 and 2006 are also presented. The future of IceCube and the extensions in both low and high energy regions will finally be discussed in the last section.

$B_s \\to ?^+ ?^-$ and the upward-going muon flux from the WIMP annihilation in the sun or the earth

E-Print Network (OSTI)

We consider the upward-going muon flux due to the WIMP annihilations in the cores of the sun and the earth, including the upper bound on the branching ratio for $B_s \\to \\mu^+ \\mu^-$ decay. We find that the constraint from $B_s \\to \\mu^+ \\mu^-$ is very strong in most parameter space, and exclude the supergravity parameter space regions where the expected upward-going muon fluxes are within the expected reach of AMANDA II.
