Abu Dhabi's Masdar project: dazzling? or Just a mirage?

SciTech Connect

The Masdar project is to build a self-contained economic zone creating 70,000 jobs and eventually housing as many as 40,000 residents in the middle of the desert by 2016. The community, which is envisioned to house a science and technology park and housing, is designed to be carbon neutral and virtually waste-free. Two-thirds of the power is to come from a 10 MW solar farm, and nearly all water is to be recycled and reused. There will be virtually no waste, as all packaging and material are to be recycled, used for power generation or turned into compost. The car-free zone will be served by advanced personal rapid transit (PRT) vehicles that will zip residents around the 6.5-square-kilometer area. The problem with Masdar is not so much what goes inside it, but rather what is outside. Masdar is unlikely to change the image of Abu Dhabi as the most carbon-intensive place on earth.

Optimization of a solar powered absorption cycle under Abu Dhabi's weather conditions

SciTech Connect

In order for the solar absorption air conditioners to become a real alternative to the conventional vapour compression systems, their performance has to be improved and their total cost has to be reduced. A solar powered absorption cycle is modeled using the Transient System Simulation (TRNSYS) program and Typical Meteorological Year 2 data of Abu Dhabi. It uses evacuated tube collectors to drive a 10 kW ammonia-water absorption chiller. Firstly, the system performance and its total cost are optimized separately using single objective optimization algorithms. The design variables considered are: the collector slope, the collector mass flow rate, the collector area and the storage tank volume. The single objective optimization results show that MATLAB global optimization methods agree with the TRNSYS optimizer. Secondly, MATLAB is used to solve a multi-objective optimization problem to improve the system's performance and cost, simultaneously. The optimum designs are presented using Pareto curve and show the potential improvements of the baseline system. (author)

Abu Dhabi sabkha, Persian Gulf, revisited: Application of strontium isotopes to test an early dolomitization model

SciTech Connect

A study of brines and diagenetically altered minerals from coastal sabkha of Abu Dhabi, Persian Gulf, was undertaken to test the flood recharge-evaporative pumping model for early dolomitization using strontium isotopes as a tracer. The {sup 87}Sr/{sup 86}Sr ratio of the sabkha brines defines a pattern of both horizontal and vertical mixing of coastal seawater and continental ground water consistent with a previously proposed model. The {sup 87}Sr/{sup 86}Sr ratio of the diagenetic dolomites indicates early dolomitization by marine recharge waters. The {sup 87}Sr/{sup 86}Sr ratio of gypsum from the dolomitization area (1.4 to 4.4 km from high-tide mark) and seaward reflects precipitation from marine brines, but more landward (6 to 9 km), gypsum and anhydrite record a continental signal in the minerals suggests a paragenetic evaporative sequence (dolomite {yields} gypsum {yields} anhydrite). The dolomitizing fluid is evaporated seawater that recharges the sabkha aquifer during supratidal flooding and is afterward pumped upward through the saturated zone by evaporative processes.

The relationship between petroleum emplacement and carbonate reservoir quality: examples from Abu Dhabi and the Amu Darya Basin

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

The relative importance of petroleum emplacement in inhibiting diagenetic processes and preserving porosity and permeability in Lower Cretaceous, Thamama Group (Kharaib Formation) carbonate reservoirs of Abu Dhabi, UAE, and in Callovian-Kimmeridgian carbonate reservoirs of the Amu Darya Basin in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, has been evaluated by combining geologic, petrophysical and geochemical data. When petroleum emplacement is synchronous with and prior to significant burial cementation in carbonates, primary petroleum inclusions are trapped in the cements. The process appears to be characterised by steep intra-field porosity-depth trends within a more gradual regional decline in porosity with depth. This has profound implications for the prediction of porosity in carbonate reservoirs. Reservoir quality is better in grainstones and packstones compared to adjacent wackestones and lime mudstones in the Kharaib Formation because of preserved macroporosity (intergranular, vuggy, mouldic); the pore system in the finer units is dominated by micropores. These features indicate a primary textural control on porosity and permeability. Within the grainstones and packstones, macroporosity is variably filled by late equant sparry calcite cements. Porosity and permeability variations in grainstones and packstones at a reservoir scale are therefore controlled by the variation in amount of equant sparry calcite cement. This in turn depends on the timing of the precipitation of this cement relative to petroleum emplacement, as shown by fluid inclusion data. Where petroleum emplacement has occurred relatively early, at migration foci, prior to significant burial cementation by equant sparry calcite, reservoir quality is preserved. Where it has occurred after significant burial cementation, reservoir quality has been destroyed. In the Amu Darya sequences, primary macroporosity is commonly preserved down to depths of 11,000 ft (3.5 km) with differences in the porosity and permeability characteristics of grainstones being controlled by variations in the amount of early, probably freshwater, cement and the extent of associated dissolution. Small volumes of burial cements do occur, but they do not contain petroleum inclusions. Consequently, there is no firm evidence that petroleum emplacement has inhibited diagenesis in this area. This part of the study has shown that it is not always possible to obtain conclusive evidence from the diagenesis to pin down the processes responsible for the preservation of reservoir quality and that petroleum filling may not always be the primary cause. The relationships documented here show that the race for space between diagenetic waters and petroleum is a major control on reservoir quality in the Thamama Group carbonate reservoirs, but is not so important for the Jurassic carbonates in the Amu Darya basin.

Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update (EIA)

- December 2007 - December 2007 1 December 2007 Short-Term Energy Outlook December 11, 2007 Release Highlights Global oil markets will likely remain tight through the forecast period. EIA projects that world oil demand will grow much faster than oil supply outside of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), leaving OPEC and inventories to offset the resultant upward pressure on prices. However, at last week's meeting in Abu Dhabi, OPEC decided to maintain its existing production quotas, noting that, in its view, the global oil market continued to be well supplied. Additional factors contributing to expectations that prices will remain high and volatile through 2008 include ongoing geopolitical risks,

Comparative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of streetlight technologies for minor roads in United Arab Emirates

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract In this work, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method is used to investigate the environmental impacts of two recent energy efficient streetlight technologies, Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH) and Light Emitting Diode (LED), with the aim of assessing their application in Abu Dhabi United Arab Emirates (UAE). The cradle to grave analysis for CMH and LED streetlights includes raw material extraction, production of streetlight fixture, use and end of life scenario, all modeled using the SimaPro software package. The results show that LED lights have larger environmental impact during the production stage, but this is offset during the operational life of the lamp, due to the lower energy consumption of LEDs. For both types of lamps, the production stage has significantly less overall impact when compared to the impact during their operational life. The analysis in this paper also covers a scenario where stand-alone light fixtures are powered by photovoltaic (PV) panels, with and without battery recycling, in addition to a scenario where the energy used for operation comes from a solar power plant. In all the cases analyzed, the LED lamp has a lower overall environmental impact. Furthermore, our analysis shows that most environmental impacts come from battery production, consumption of fossil fuels for energy, and transportation of parts.

Implementation and economical study of HAWT under different wind scenarios

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract Wind energy has seen a tremendous growth over the past decade and continues to grow into a major player into the renewable energy market. More than 3% of global electricity supply comes from wind power in 2012. The technology continues to mature thereby reducing the deployment cost at a value competing with the least expensive natural gas power plant. Diligent analysis of the wind including average wind speed, wind gust, boundary layer, seasonal and diurnal wind pattern adding to land mortgage, public perception, road and grid accessibility are all key factors for successful and profitable wind turbine implementation. In this work, the implementation of wind energy in Abu Dhabi was considered. In this study the annual wind data recorded every 10min at Masdar metrological station over a period of three years from 2010 to 2012 are analyzed. The probability density distributions are derived from time series data and the distributional parameters are identified. It is followed by fitting the measured wind data with the maximum likelihood Weibull distribution. The power curves of two commercially available horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) a large size 600kW and small size 3.5kW are coupled with the modelled data to account for the annual energy production and capacity factor. Considering the turbine efficiency, economical study that evaluates the cost of wind energy implementation, returns on investment are conducted accounting for capital cost, annuity, depreciation and operation and maintenance.

Modeling of a Solar Driven HD (Humidification-Dehumidification) Desalination System

Science Journals Connector (OSTI)

Abstract The paper presents a computer code developed to simulate the operation of a low-temperature thermally driven desalination system, based on the HD process. The system is a closed air cycle unit and is based on a single-effect humidification/dehumidification technique: heated salt water is introduced into an humidifier to saturate the circulating air and then the water vapor separates in a condensation section, where fresh water production takes place. The modeling procedure allows to investigates the air and water thermodynamic properties across each component. The computer code is able to optimize the heat exchanger surfaces and the air and water mass flow rates, depending on the sea water and the heat source temperature levels. The code was used to analyze an HD desalination unit with fresh water production of about 200 liters per hour, for two different configurations: a direct solar driven scheme, where the salt water entering the HD unit is heated by a solar collector field, and an integrated cooling-desalination system driven by solar energy, where the solar collected heat is used to drive a LiBr absorption machine and then the low-temperature heat rejected by the chiller is exploited to drive the HD process. The simulation code has been integrated into the Trnsys environment to perform a transient simulation of the whole systems. The annual simulations have been carried out on an hourly basis for typical climatic conditions of Abu Dhabi (UAE).

3-D seismology in the Arabian Gulf

SciTech Connect

Since 1977 when Aramco and GSI (Geophysical Services International) pioneered the first 3-D seismic survey in the Arabian Gulf, under the guidance of Aramco`s Chief Geophysicist John Hoke, 3-D seismology has been effectively used to map many complex subsurface geological phenomena. By the mid-1990s extensive 3-D surveys were acquired in Abu Dhabi, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Also in the mid-1990`s Bahrain, Kuwait and Dubai were preparing to record surveys over their fields. On the structural side 3-D has refined seismic maps, focused faults and fractures systems, as well as outlined the distribution of facies, porosity and fluid saturation. In field development, 3D has not only reduced drilling costs significantly, but has also improved the understanding of fluid behavior in the reservoir. In Oman, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has now acquired the first Gulf 4-D seismic survey (time-lapse 3D survey) over the Yibal Field. The 4-D survey will allow PDO to directly monitor water encroachment in the highly-faulted Cretaceous Shu`aiba reservoir. In exploration, 3-D seismology has resolved complex prospects with structural and stratigraphic complications and reduced the risk in the selection of drilling locations. The many case studies from Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, which are reviewed in this paper, attest to the effectiveness of 3D seismology in exploration and producing, in clastics and carbonates reservoirs, and in the Mesozoic and Paleozoic.

Operators in Yemen draw warning from Saudis

SciTech Connect

This paper reports that foreign oil companies with concessions in northern Yemen have been drawn into a border dispute between Yemen and Saudi Arabia. At least six companies received letters from the Saudi government warning them that steps, as yet undefined, will be taken if exploration extends into disputed areas. A second territorial dispute also appears to be brewing in the region. Iran has ejected United Arab Emirates nationals from the island of Abu Musa in the Persian Gulf, which is jointly administered by Iran and Sharjah, one of the emirates. The U.A.E. government has reported the situation to the Gulf Cooperation Council, triggering a denial from Iran that anyone has been deported from the island.

Cretaceous paleogeography of Africa

SciTech Connect

Five stage-length maps (Valanginian, Aptian, Cenomanian, Coniacian, and Maestrichtian) of Africa integrate topography/bathymetry, lithofacies, tectonics, and climatically sensitive sediments. These reconstructions differ from currently available maps in their level of detail and accuracy, and in that computer routines were developed to plot all aspects of the maps, including lithofacies patterns. Bathymetric contours were determined from community paleoecology and from thermal subsidence models of the newly opening Atlantic and Indian oceans. Topographic contours have been estimated from uplift models of rift shoulders, as well as from the erosion and sedimentation record of both the internal and marginal basins. The uplift of rift shoulders from Nigeria to Sudan is suggested by the extensive Nubian and equivalent sandstones across north Africa. This Benue-Ngaoundere-Abu Gabra rift system approximately paralleled the paleoequator, and its shoulders must have experienced the high rainfall normally associated with the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ). In fact, these mountains would have served as a high level heat source, and would have pinned the ITCZ to their summits. Such a system tends to reduce seasonal excursions of the ITCZ, and may have influenced the high biological productivity represented by the oil source rocks of the Arabian peninsula. These sources also lie on the equator and could have resulted from a shelf incursion of the equatorial divergence zone, which is controlled by the ITCZ.
