Abu Dhabi's Masdar project: dazzling? or Just a mirage?

The Masdar project is to build a self-contained economic zone creating 70,000 jobs and eventually housing as many as 40,000 residents in the middle of the desert by 2016. The community, which is envisioned to house a science and technology park and housing, is designed to be carbon neutral and virtually waste-free. Two-thirds of the power is to come from a 10 MW solar farm, and nearly all water is to be recycled and reused. There will be virtually no waste, as all packaging and material are to be recycled, used for power generation or turned into compost. The car-free zone will be served by advanced personal rapid transit (PRT) vehicles that will zip residents around the 6.5-square-kilometer area. The problem with Masdar is not so much what goes inside it, but rather what is outside. Masdar is unlikely to change the image of Abu Dhabi as the most carbon-intensive place on earth.

Optimization of a solar powered absorption cycle under Abu Dhabi's weather conditions

In order for the solar absorption air conditioners to become a real alternative to the conventional vapour compression systems, their performance has to be improved and their total cost has to be reduced. A solar powered absorption cycle is modeled using the Transient System Simulation (TRNSYS) program and Typical Meteorological Year 2 data of Abu Dhabi. It uses evacuated tube collectors to drive a 10 kW ammonia-water absorption chiller. Firstly, the system performance and its total cost are optimized separately using single objective optimization algorithms. The design variables considered are: the collector slope, the collector mass flow rate, the collector area and the storage tank volume. The single objective optimization results show that MATLAB global optimization methods agree with the TRNSYS optimizer. Secondly, MATLAB is used to solve a multi-objective optimization problem to improve the system's performance and cost, simultaneously. The optimum designs are presented using Pareto curve and show the potential improvements of the baseline system. (author)

Gender and the homoerotic logic of torture at Abu Ghraib

The focus of this dissertation is a social and cultural theoretical analysis of the empirical data regarding the prison abuse that occurred at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq by American forces. I provide the following: an examination of the photographs of abuse that were leaked to the press in the fall of 2003; an analysis of both Lynndie Englands and Sabrina Harmans courts-martial (two of the rotten apples); a discussion of the body associated with punishment and torture, and also as marked in ways of identification; and an assessment of additional representations regarding prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib. Throughout this analysis, I use gender as a lens to understand Abu Ghraib and the subsequent courts-martial. It is important to note that I gained access to and was intimately involved as a graduate researcher for Dr. Stjepan G. Mestrovic, an expert for the defense, and experienced the events of the trials themselves, first-hand and during closed counsel and open session. The empirical data provided is drawn primarily from first-hand qualitative research that involved participant-observation of two trials, interaction with soldiers and officers, and analysis of both documents pertaining to the trial as well as the photographs of abuse themselves, among other things. I incorporate cultural studies, feminist and sociological theory (modern and postmodern), and feminist philosophy so as to provide a theoretical analysis of the abuse at Abu Ghraib and the subsequent courts-martial focused on gender and sexuality. The result of this dissertation is a social and cultural theoretical analysis of the empirical data regarding the prison abuse that occurred at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq by American forces, where women, gender, and sexuality are shown to be important criteria for examination. Specifically, the results of this project highlight areas that current analyses of the abuse at Abu Ghraib have left out: how women fit into American military politics, how gender functions as power within the military, how gender is socially constructed in the military in terms of heterosexuality, and how both gender and sexuality are used as weapons by the American military. This kind of examination is useful in future policy considerations for the military and for detainee treatment, where analyses of women, gender, sexuality, and power have been so far neglected in any serious way, and even by sociologists Phillip Zimbardo and the application of his Stanford Prison Study to the events of Abu Ghraib.

A measurement of the radioactivity content of phosphate ore material, phosphatic fertilizer (superphosphate), and by-product phosphogypsum in the Abu-Zaabal phosphate plant, Egypt, has been carried out. According to the results of gamma-ray spectroscopy analysis, {sup 238}U was found in concentrations of 523, 473, and 134 Bq kg{sup {minus}1}; {sup 226}Ra in concentrations of 514, 301, and 411 Bq kg{sup {minus}1}; {sup 232}Th in concentrations of 37, 24, and 19 Bq kg{sup {minus}1}; and {sup 40}K in concentrations of 19, 3, and 16 Bq kg{sup {minus}1} for the analyzed materials, respectively. LNG imports to the US jumped in 1996 as Algerian base-load plants resumed operations following major revamps. Exports from Alaska to Japan grew by nearly 4% over 1995. Total LNG imports to the US in 1996 were 40.27 bcf compared to 17.92 bcf in 1995, an increase of 124.8%. Algeria supplied 35.32 bcf; Abu Dhabi, 4.95 bcf. About 82.3% of the imported LNG was received at Distrigas Corp.`s terminal north of Boston. The remaining LNG was received at the Pan National terminal in Lake Charles, LA. LNG imports during 1995 fell to such a low level not because of depressed US demand but because of limited supply. The paper discusses LNG-receiving terminals, base-load producers, LNG pricing, and exports.

The Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre (SZDLC) is a high performance sustainable exhibition center under construction in the U.A.E, aiming for the highest achievable sustainability ratings within the LEED and Estidama sustainability building rating programs. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) sustainable building program provides a set of criteria for rating sustainable buildings (U.S. Green Building Council 2009). The Estidama rating program, currently in its pilot phase, is an upcoming sustainable building guideline for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (Urban Planning Council, Abu Dhabi 2008). The Estidama program is similar to LEED in many ways, with a focus on the integrative design process for sustainable building projects. Both of these rating programs assign a large share of points to reducing energy usage which is related to CO2 production. To demonstrate that a design has improved performance, the rating programs encourage the use of whole building energy simulation. The building as it is designed is simulated and compared to a baseline building, where the building envelope and systems are replaced with materials and components meeting minimum acceptable standards. The percentage improvement of the As-Designed building over the Baseline building dictates the number of points awarded in the respective categories. Innovative solutions in managing the simulation complexity and visualizing energy performance were necessitated by the complexity of performing the building simulations. Improved decision support during the design phase and a better understanding of energy usage in the building are expected to improve the energy efficiency, operating costs, and environmental impact of the building. The detail available from an ambitious modeling approach is presented, demonstrating the usefulness of building energy performance simulation for sustainability ratings as well as design decision support.

The rapid development of natural gas and condensate reserves in the Middle East results from a simple motivation: the desire of governments to earn revenues. For the past decade, Middle East governments have run budget deficits, which they funded by drawing down foreign assets and issuing debt. Now in the process of structural economic reform, they have begun to use an under-utilized resource--natural gas, of which Middle East governments own about one third of the world`s reserves. Governments receive revenues from several sources in natural gas developments, which makes the projects very attractive. Revenue comes from the sale of the natural gas in the domestic market and, if exported, the international market; the sale of associated condensates; the additional exports of crude oil or refined products if natural gas is substituted for refined products in domestic markets; the increased sale of crude oil if natural gas is injected into reservoirs to maintain pressure; and the sale of petrochemicals where natural gas is used as feedstock. Large projects under way in the Middle East highlight the consequences of multiple revenue sources and interlinked costs of natural gas and condensate development. Other countries in the region are undertaking similar projects, so examples cited represent only a portion of what is occurring. The paper describes Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Iran.

This paper describes an innovative and novel approach to teaching media and journalism in the United Arab Emirates. This methodology is transferable to other areas of the world. Living Books^TM have been conceived as an interactive and dynamic learning tool that caters for students' preferred learning styles and is delivered in a form that are most appropriate for the audience's skills and background. History Zayed University was founded in 1998 to prepare female leaders to create the future of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). With campuses in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, total enrollment of this all-female university touches about 2,500 students who are being prepared to confront a rapidly changing, information and technology-driven world. The language of instruction is English, and most classes are taught in an English as a Second Language environment. Targeted learning outcomes at Zayed include goal setting; managing complex tasks; using sophisticated technologies to communicate, learn and solve problems; and functioning effectively in the multicultural environments of the global society. The university's curriculum has been designed to reflect the UAE's need for graduates well prepared to enter the workforce and to assume a place of responsibility and leadership in the family, the community or the nation (Academic Program Model, 2001). The country needs such graduates as it transforms its economy. The present work is directed to the characterization of the phosphogypsum (PG) solid waste which accompanying the production of phosphoric acid by the wet process in Abu Zaabal company for fertilizers and chemicals production in Egypt. Samples from PG were characterized radiometrically using both {gamma}- and {alpha}- spectrometric analysis and the different naturally occurring radionuclides present were identified. The main activity concentrations of such radionuclides were determined and the data obtained showed that this waste contains an enhanced level of some radionuclides especially Ra-226. Treatment investigations were experimented to reduce the enhanced activity level of Ra-226, which was found to exceed that permitted by the international regulations. (authors)

Geothermics of Nile delta and southeast Mediterranean: Investigation and geothermal energy potential

The authors collected 289 temperature readings from 66 exploratory wells randomly distributed in an area about 57,000 km{sup 2} from different rock units of Tertiary and Quaternary ages. The bottom-hole temperature (BHT) readings were corrected using an empirical equation based on actual static formation temperatures collected from the study area. The authors modified the Fertl and Wichmann method to apply to the study area. If the Fertl and Wichmann curve is applied, readings can be corrected using a deduced relation. The geothermal gradient for each well calculated used the best-fit method utilizing all recorded BHTs in that well. A new geothermal gradient map was constructed using the corrected BHT values. A genetic relationship between the geothermal gradient and lithology, tectonic setup, gas saturation, and water saturation of the subsurface formations in the Nile delta and southeast Mediterranean area was sought. Isothermal maps at different depths in the study area were constructed. Areas of relatively high subsurface temperature were delineated. The Abu Madi gas field as a case study for geothermal behavior was emphasized. The geothermal reservoirs in the study area as possible new and renewable energy resources were defined and classified as low-temperature reservoirs. Two geothermal reservoirs have been recorded: a shallow one associated with Mit Ghamr-El Wastani rock units and a deep one associated with abu Madi-Qawassim Formations.

Puritan Military Justice: American War Crimes and the Global War on Terrorism

Exploring Puritanical cultural habits in the 21st century American military, the following study focuses on U.S. Army courts-martial in the Global War on Terrorism. The study uses Emile Durkheim's original sociological interpretation of crime and deviance. That interpretation is linked with responsibility as described by Durkheim's follower Paul Fauconnet in Responsibility: A Study in Sociology ([1928] 1978) and with a new cultural reading of Max Weber's The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism ([1905] 1976). The study is an inductive, descriptive examination of the Puritanical aspects of American military culture based on its treatment of acts labeled as deviant and criminal in the Global War on Terrorism. Four sets of war crimes are included in the study: Abu Ghraib (which occurred in Iraq in 2004), Operation Iron Triangle (which occurred in Iraq in 2006), the Baghdad canal killings (which occurred in Iraq in 2007), and the Maywand District killings (which occurred in Afghanistan in 2010). My data include primary data collected through participation and observation as a consultant for courts-martial related to all the cases except Abu Ghraib. Records of trial, investigation reports, charge sheets, sworn statements, and other documentation are also included in the study as secondary data sources. The study illuminates how unconscious, Puritan cultural habits color and shape both military actions and their perceptions. I explore Puritanism and its influence on military law, responsibility, revenge, "magic" (in its sociological sense), and narcissism. The study concludes with observations and recommendations for changes in U.S. military law.

Kenya basins have evolved primarily through extension related to episodic continental rifting. In eastern Kenya, thick accumulations of sediments formed within grabens during the prerift phase (Precambrian to Carboniferous) of the Gondwana breakup. Synrift sedimentation (Late Carboniferous to Middle Jurassic) occurred within a north-south rift system, which included the Mandera basin, South Anza basin, and Lamu embayment. During the Early Jurassic, a marine transgression invaded the margins of the eastern Kenya rift basins, resulting in the deposition of platform carbonates and shales. A Callovian-aged salt basin formed in the offshore regions of the Lamu embayment. Intermittent tectonic activity and eustatic sea-level changes controlled sedimentation, which produced marine shales, carbonates or evaporites, and fluvio-deltaic to lacustrine sandstones. From the Early Cretaceous to recent, continental sediments were deposited within the North Anza and Turkana basins. These fluvial-lacustrine sediments are similar to the Lower Cretaceous sequences that have produced oil in the Mesozoic Sudanese Abu Gabra rift. Although exploration activities began in the early 1950s, significant occurrences of potential reservoir, source, and seal lithologies as well as trapping configurations remain in many areas. Favorable structures and sequences of reservoir sandstones and carbonates overlain by potentially sealing lacustrine or marine shales, evaporites, or volcanics have been noted. Potential source beds are believed to be present within shales of the lacustrine or marine depositional environments.

Coal, Smoke, and Death: Bituminous Coal and American Home Heating, 1920-1959

Air pollution was severe in many parts of the United States in the first half of the twentieth century. Much of the air pollution was attributable to bituminous coal. This paper uses newly digitized state-month mortality data to estimate the effects of bituminous coal consumption for heating on mortality rates in the U.S. between 1920 and 1959. The use of coal for heating was high until the mid-1940s, and then declined sharply. The switch to cleaner fuels was driven by plausibly exogenous changes in the availability of natural gas, the end of war-related supply restrictions, and a series of coal strikes from 1946-1950. The identification strategy leverages the fact that coal consumption for heating increases during cold weather. Specifically, the mortality effects are identified from differences in the temperature-mortality response functions in state-years with greater coal consumption. Cold weather spells in high coal state-years saw greater increases in the mortality rates than cold weather spells in low coal state-years. Our estimates suggest that reductions in the use of bituminous coal for heating between 1945 and 1959 decreased average annual mortality by 2.2-3.5 percent, January mortality by 3.2-5.1 percent, average annual infant mortality by 1.6-2.8 percent, and January infant mortality by 3.1-4.6 percent. Our estimates are likely to be a lower-bound, since they only capture short-run relationships between coal and mortality. The TACTIC atmospheric Cherenkov Imaging telescope

The TACTIC $\\gamma$-ray telescope, equipped with a light collector of area $\\sim$9.5m$^2$ and a medium resolution imaging camera of 349-pixels, has been in operation at Mt.Abu, India since 2001. This paper describes the main features of its various subsystems and its overall performance with regard to (a) tracking accuracy of its 2-axes drive system, (b) spot size of the light collector, (c) back-end signal processing electronics and topological trigger generation scheme, (d) data acquisition and control system and (e) relative and absolute gain calibration methodology. Using a trigger field of view of 11$\\times$11 pixels ($\\sim$ 3.4$^\\circ$$\\times3.4^\\circ$), the telescope records a cosmic ray event rate of $\\sim$2.5 Hz at a typical zenith angle of 15$^\\circ$. Monte Carlo simulation results are also presented in the paper for comparing the expected performance of the telescope with actual observational results. The consistent detection of a steady signal from the Crab Nebula above $\\sim$1.2 TeV energy, at a sensitivity level of $\\sim5.0\\sigma$ in $\\sim$25 h, alongwith excellent matching of its energy spectrum with that obtained by other groups, reassures that the performance of the TACTIC telescope is quite stable and reliable. Furthermore, encouraged by the detection of strong $\\gamma$-ray signals from Mrk 501 (during 1997 and 2006 observations) and Mrk 421 (during 2001 and 2005-2006 observations), we believe that there is considerable scope for the TACTIC telescope to monitor similar TeV $\\gamma$-ray emission activity from other active galactic nuclei on a long term basis.
