NCAR 51 Technical Tours 
The following options are being considered as NCAR 51 technical tours. You will have an
opportunity to select your preferred tour options in the NCAR 51 registration packet. Attendee
response will determine the tours that will be scheduled. Plans call for three tours to be offered
from among the various programs and facilities listed below:
Tour 1 Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU)
Option 1: Technical Assistance Programs and Basic Research
Includes ORAU's Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site (REAC/TS), the Radiation Internal Dose Information Center (RIDIC), and the Cytogenetics Program.Option 2: Professional Training Programs and Environmental Survey and Site Assessment Program (ESSAP)
Discussion of ORAU's professional training courses and environmental survey and site assessment activities, as well as a presentation of ORAU's Historical Health Physics Instrumentation Collection, which features equipment used by Nobel-prize-winning researchers, radioactive quack cures, and everyday household items that are radioactive.
Tour 2 Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Option 1: Neutron Sciences Research
Tour the Research Reactors Division and see the High Flux Isotope Reactor and Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam FacilityOption 2: Advanced Materials Research
Tour of ORNL's High Temperature Materials Laboratory, a national user facility for ceramics use exploration, and the Buildings Technology Center, which is responsible for energy use research and development.Option 3: Environmental and Life Sciences Research
Tour of the Biology Division, which includes the Mouse House, home to 150,000 mice, and discussion of the many facets of environmental sciences from biological monitoring techniques to DNA fingerprinting in plants.Option 4: Manufacturing Technologies
Overview of the Oak Ridge Centers for Manufacturing Technologies, dedicated to deployment of products, processes, and manufacturing skills. Also see the Ultraprecision Manufacturing Technology Center and the Coatings and Finishing Center.Option 5: High-Performance Computing and Information Technologies
Visit includes the Central Computing Center, which features the Intel Paragon supercomputer, and a visit to Technology 2020, a living telecommunications and information technology laboratory.
Tour 3 The University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Option 1: Imaging and Data Visualization Facilities and UT Medical Center
Tour the facilities that house UTK's work in sensor and data fusion/image processing; experience the CAVE surrounded by virtual reality images; and visit the UT Medical Center imaging facilities, which include PET/MRI and state-of-the-art medical imaging research.Option 2: Center for Environmental Biotechnology (CEB) and Textiles and Non-Woven Development Center (TANDEC)
Visit CEB, a multidisciplinary research facility that has pioneered the application of state-of-the-art molecular biological techniques, and TANDEC, a unique research partnership with Exxon Chemical and numerous other companies with an explicit technology transfer mission.
