Tom Malone grew up in Mississippi. He graduated from Pearl River Junior College in 1960
and received his B.S. in Engineering in 1963 and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 1966
from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Upon graduation, Dr. Malone joined Milliken &
Company as a chemist in the Milliken Research Corporation. Over the years, he has held a
number of different positions, including President of the Interior Furnishings Division and
Milliken Chemicals, prior to being named company President and Chief Operating Officer in
October 1983.
Malone is Chairman of the Industry Operating Board for the AMTEX (American Textile)
Partnership, a research and development collaboration between the fibers, textiles, and
fabricated products industry and DOE, DOE laboratories, other government agencies, and
leading U.S. universities. The goal of AMTEX is to strengthen the competitiveness of this
industry.
Malone was named 1994 Leader of the Year by Textile World and in 1995 was named
Honorary Research Fellow in Textile Research by the Textile Research Institute. He holds
many professional affiliations and is a member of the Chief Executives' Organization as well as
a member of the President's Circle of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of
Medicine. In addition, he is involved with the Council on Competitiveness and the World
Business Council and serves on the Board of Textile Hall Corporation and the Board of
Directors for Mercantile Stores Company.
