NCAR 51 Companion/Guest Tours
The following companion/guest outing options showcase many of the highlights of East
Tennessee. There are separate charges for some of these programs (noted in the description).
The level of interest and number of participants will determine which of the options are
offered.
Monday, September 22
- Orientation Session 9:00-10:00 a.m.
A brief program orientation and preview of area attractions. No charge.
- History and Shopping 10:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
Spend the morning at historic Ramsey House and have lunch at the Apple Barn Restaurant
in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Then browse Pigeon Forge's famous outlet malls. Cost: $20
(includes lunch).
- Arts and Antiques 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Visit the Southern Market and prowl some of Knoxville's art galleries and antique shops.
Enjoy lunch at Naples Italian Restaurant, a favorite of locals and visitors alike. Cost: $20
(includes lunch).
Tuesday, September 23
Morning Options
- Heart of Knoxville 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Tour the University of Tennessee's McClung Museum and the Museum of East Tennessee
History for a look into this region's past. Cost: $10.
- Knoxville Museum of Art and The Candy Factory 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
One of America's newest museums, the Knoxville Museum of Art features a special
exhibit in September from women artists entitled "Objects of Personal Significance". The
Candy Factory, located next to the museum, houses some of the city's most interesting arts
and crafts shops and a delectable candy store! Cost is $10.
Afternoon Options
- Technical Tours 1:00-4:00 p.m.

- Oak Ridge Attractions 12:30-4:00 p.m.
Visit the American Museum of Science and Energy, the Oak Ridge Art Center, or Oak
Ridge Mall, each just a short walk from the Garden Plaza Hotel. No charge.
- Department of Energy Tour 12:45-3:00 p.m.
Visit the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Y-12 Plant. Features a presentation at the
Graphite Reactor, a National Historic Landmark. No charge.
Wednesday, September 24
- Oak Ridge Attractions 12:30-4:00 p.m.
Visit the American Museum of Science and Energy, the Oak Ridge Art Center, or Oak
Ridge Mall, each just a short walk from the Garden Plaza Hotel. No charge.
- The Great Smoky Mountains National Park: "Maintaining and Protecting a National
Tresure" 1:00-7:30 p.m.
See the Appalachian Mountains in all of their greatness. Highlights include a bus tour to
Clingman's Dome, a short hike to Lookout Tower, and presentations from park and ORNL
representatives. This tour is scheduled so that any interested NCAR 51 participants can
attend. It is limited to 23 people and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Cost: $20.
