Wolfgang K. H. "Pief", Panofsky, a renowned particle physics researcher, accelerator builder, outspoken arms control advocate, and administrator of basic research, died September 25, 2007. Dr. Panofsky was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1969 and the U.S. Department of Energy's Enrico Fermi Award in 1979.
