DESCRIPTIONA unique new software product developed at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is revolutionizing the commercial fuel cell design and manufacturing process. SOFC-MP (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell-Multi-Physics) is the first fuel cell design software that allows engineers to build, test, break, and fix virtual fuel cells right at their desktop workstations. SOFC-MP makes it possible to simulate the fuel flow, heat, and stress that solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) will experience during actual operation. The virtual prototype generated using this ingenious tool will save manufacturers millions of dollars and incalculable amounts of time because it drastically reduces the need to build and test physical prototypes. SOFC-MP simulates exactly the complex electrochemical reactions and relationships among gas flow, cell temperature, and mechanical performance so reliable, efficient SOFCs can be designed to generate power for industry, homes, the automobiles, military fighting vehicles, and other potential applications.
