Abstra ct: In classical p hysics there was a clear u n derstan din g of what p hysical sp ace
an d tim e are: p hysical sp ace is the theatre of the collection of all even ts that are actu al at
a certain m om en t of tim e, an d p hysical tim e is the p aram etrization of the fl ow of tim e.
3 -dim en sion al sp ace an d 1 -dim en sion al tim e have been su bstitu ted by 4 -dim en sion al
tim esp ace in relativity theory. Bu t if reality is the 4 -dim en sion al tim esp ace m an ifold
of relativity theory, what is then the m ean in g of `chan g e in tim e'? We in vestig ate this
p roblem of relativity theory by followin g an op eration al ap p roach orig in ally elaborated
for q u an tu m m echan ics. We show that the con tradiction between a g eom etric view an d
p rocess view of reality is du e to a m iscon cep tion in the in terp retation of relativity theory.
We arg u e that it is n ot tim e which is sp ace-like, with the in evitable p aradox ical situ ation
of a block u n iverse as resu lt, bu t on the con trary, it is sp ace which is tim e-like. T his
