The college is celebrating two new facilities, which expand its offerings
to students and fellow researchers: The opening of the Combined Array
for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA) represents a merg-
er of two millimeter-wavelength radio astronomy arrays--the Owens
Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) and the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland
Association (BIMA)--to form a powerful astronomical tool for the new
millennium. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) has broken ground for its major operations and science center
at the university's research park.
