GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: To examine and discuss molecular approaches to the study of the
function of the nervous system.
Suggested: The Neuron, Cell and Molecular Biology; Levitan and Kaczmarek; Third Edition;
Oxford University Press, 2001. Selected readings from the primary literature will be used as the
principal source of instruction.
ATTENDANCE: Attendance is required at all scheduled lectures and exams, except in cases of
illness, mandatory religious obligations or official University activities.
GRADING: Grades will be based on participation in the class meeting, both of material
presented in by individual student and discussion of other material. Occasional take home
material will also be required. The policies related to academic dishonesty have been stated by
the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and are available at: http:// www.uic.edu/depts/sja.
Students involved in academic dishonesty will be referred to the Office of Judicial Affairs in the
College of LAS.
SYLLABUS: The syllabus outlines the topics to be discussed, the chapters in the text where the
material is covered. Each time block will allow both a lecture/discussion on the material to be
presented followed by an in-depth analysis of a paper and related work either new in the
