Taking the long view on contemporary issues
Council Chief Executive Elizabeth Raikes believes her Humanities degrees
at Southampton have been positive assets in her career. Although senior
local government officers traditionally have a background in the law or
accountancy, she feels studying history and archaeology has helped her
to process and analyse large quantities of data and make informed
Elizabeth now combines the challenge of the top job at Torbay Council
with a little studying on the side: "I've just finished writing a book about
Edward Lear's visit to Corsica in 1868; my former Professor at
Southampton Colin Platt, who now lives here in the west country, is
reading it for me," she says.
She started her undergraduate studies at the University of Southampton
after serving for six years in the Wrens: "I'd actually got a place to read
history at Kent after leaving school but I didn't really want to live in Herne
Bay. I had a temporary job in Birmingham and every day, I walked past
