Abstract
This paper presents the design and implementation of the Transis communication subsystem.
Is starts with indicating typical classes of fault tolerant applications supported by Transis.
It shows the design decisions made in order to provide useful services for these applications.
Then, it describes the protocols developed for supporting these services efficiently. The
important novel aspects are: Supporting partitionable operation; employing the hardware
multicast for high throughput communication; utilizing a novel network based flowcontrol
mechanism; providing simple and easy to use group semantics.
