1. Introduction
Feature extraction is considered to be an impor-
tant problem in pattern recognition. The mapping
methods oriented to classifier design (Siedlecki et
al. (1988a)) are special cases of feature extraction
methods. The main difference concerns the dimen-
sions of the feature space. Thus, the mapping
methods are restricted to dimension two (or three
in some applications), while feature extraction
