RE: Announcement
Cancer Education Program for People who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing
The Deaf and Hard of Hearing population faces challenges of dealing with cancer disease, but has
difficulty accessing health information and services. Moores UCSD Cancer Center created a series of
cancer education videos in American Sign Language along with captioning and voice-overlay (available
in both DVD and VHS). Each video has a similar format with a question and answer session of how
cancer occurs in people, how to detect it, and possible treatment options, including a discussion about
clinical trials. These videos are scientifically proven to increase access to cancer information.
The program currently has six videos covering nine cancer topics: Breast Cancer, Prostate and
Testicular Cancer, Gynecological Cancer (Cervical, Ovarian, and Uterine Cancers), Colorectal Cancer,
Skin Cancer, and Smoking Cessation. More videos are currently in production; one on the topic of
exercise and two on nutrition (both topics are helpful for cancer prevention).
The information from these videos is also available on the internet at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center's
website, http://cancer.ucsd.edu/deafinfo, so that it can be easily accessed by groups and individuals
