Summary: Message from the President November 2008
The University celebrated Greater Together with the Community in October by hosting 21 community
events in three weeks including convocation and my installation as President. We highlighted our
University to the city and province, and within our own community. Although the formal celebrations
are over, we continue that spirit of community and connection in our daily interactions with each other
and with our students.
Convocation is a reminder that our students are the University's priority. We congratulate our
graduates as they move into the broader community as alumni. We wish them well, we celebrate their
success and we thank them for inspiring us through their energy, dreams and commitment to the
future.
One of the six objectives I have undertaken in my first six months as President is to focus on student
recruitment and retention through engagement. An initial step in that process is the recent change to
a student focus on our University website. I hope it is a useful tool that connects students with all the
resources available to them at the University. We are also consolidating our recruitment efforts and
materials and have added to our recruiting team. Our long-term strategic enrolment plan will support
more extensive future initiatives in a multi-faceted approach to attract high school, graduate,
international, and mature students.
Another of my objectives is to build relationships with the campus, city and provincial communities. I
am well on the way and the events in October helped support that goal. I have already met many
people on campus, and numerous government, community and business leaders. I am impressed with
