a. SSM/I data
Precipitation estimates from SSM/I are available over the oceans twice-daily as ascending and
descending orbital overpasses from Remote Sensing Systems (RSS; http://www.ssmi.com) at a
horizontal resolution of 0.250.25 degrees (S1). For comparison with coarser climate model grids,
this resolution was degraded to 2.52.5 degrees. Daily data were constructed by averaging the
