Summary: Correction for "Newly identified and diverse plastid-bearing branch on the
eukaryotic tree of life" by Eunsoo Kim, James W. Harrison, Sebastian Sudek,
Meredith D. M. Jones, Heather M. Wilcox, Thomas A. Richards, Alexandra Z.
Worden, and John M. Archibald, which appeared in issue 4, January 25, 2011, of
Proc Natl Acad Sci USA (108:1496­1500; first published January 4, 2011;
10.1073/pnas.1013337108).
Our phylogenetic analysis of partial 16S rDNA sequences presented in
Figure 1 included sequences that were given incorrect taxonomic assignments.
These sequences (GenBank accession numbers HM595096, 097, 099, 101, 108,
137 and 153) belong to 99% Cluster 0018, which is unrelated to the rappemonad
clade, and were obtained from freshwater sites only. The tree topology and
bootstrap support values are similar to those in the original tree when Cluster
0018 is removed and the phylogenetic analysis rerun (see the replacement
Figure 1 attached). This error does not affect the conclusions of the article or the
data concerning the rappemonads.
