An academic career researching Chemistry has already taken Dr Joanna
Rooke across Europe from Birmingham to Belgium. And she has not
ruled out living and working even further afield in future.
Joanna grew up in Hampshire but saw a great deal of the world as a
child as her teacher parents saw holidays as invaluable opportunities
to travel. She studied French and Spanish at school and worked for
three months at a school in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires but
soon realised her career would lie in science.
"I was quite good at Maths and that's important if you are interested in
science," she says. "I took the classic combination of double Maths,
Physics and Chemistry at college in Winchester but chose a degree
course that included a language element."
Joanna kept up her French while studying Chemistry at Birmingham,
specialising in her fourth year in materials chemistry, then decided to
