Abstract. The Wigner{Poisson equation is the most successful basis for transient simula-
tions of quantum{e ect semiconductor devices so far.
We present a (second order) operator splitting method for the time{discretization of this
non{linear pseudo{di erential equation. For the application to quantum devices some im-
portant model extensions are discussed (boundary conditions, many{body e ects).
