Abstract
Shared buer switches do not suer from head of line blocking which is a common problem in simple input buering.
Shared buer switches have previously been studied under uniform and unbalanced trac patterns. However, due to
the complexity of the model, it was not possible to fully explore the performance of such a switch, in the presence of a
single hot spot. In this paper, we develop a new model for an ATM switch constructed from shared buered switching
elements, and operating under a hot spot trac pattern. Hot spot trac is one of more realistic trac in ATM
switching. The model is validated by comparison with simulation results. The model is used to study the switch per-
formance in terms of throughput, cell delay, cell loss probability and the optimal buer utilization. Numerical results
show that, in the presence of hot spot trac, shared buer switches degrade more signi®cantly than switches with
dedicated input and/or output buers. The model can be used by switch designers to optimize the design and per-
formance of switches. Ó 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
