ABSTRACT

nronitoringdensityof thc crayfish Pntcamharusalleni in the freshwatermarshesof the Florida
Everglades.We successfullyapplieda permanentvisibletagsuitablefor massor individualrnarking
of crayfish.In laboratorymesocosms,malesand f'emalesandjuveniles and adultsenteredbaited
wire trapswith sirnilarfiequency,reflectinga lackofage- or sex-specificbiasin trapping.In flooded
marshhabitat,we releasedmarkedcrayfishamonga circular arrayof baitedtrapsset at a specilic
radialdistancefiom the releasepoint anddctcrminedrecaptureproportionsover48 h. We thenused
the methodologyof Turchin & Odenaal(1996) to estimatethe efl'ectivesarnplingareabasedon
the proportionsof crayfishrecapturedover variousradial distances.In floodedmarshes,the mean
proportionof recapturesdeclinedfiom 0.59in trapswith a l-m samplingradiusto 0.02in trapswith
a 2[3-msamplingradius.A log-linearregressionmodelprovidedthebestfit to the capturedata,and
the eil-ectivesamplingerreaof baitedtrapswas estimatedas 56.3 mt. The efl'ectivesamplingarea
servesasa translationcoefhcientthat can be usedto calculateactualdensityof crayiishin a given
