Wereviewherethecurrentpoliticallandscapeandourowneffortstoaddresstheattemptstounder-
minescienceeducationinWisconsin.Tomountaneffectiveresponse,expertiseinevolutionarybiol-
ogyandinthehistoryofthepubliccontroversyisusefulbutnotessential.However,enteringthe
frayrequiresaminimaltoolkitofinformation.Here,wesummarizesomeofthescientificandlegal
historyofthisissueandlistaseriesofactionsthatscientistscantaketohelpfacilitategoodscience
educationandanimprovedatmosphereforthescientificenterprisenationally.Finally,weprovide
somemodellegislationthathasbeenintroducedinWisconsintostrengthentheteachingofscience.

biology,thankslargelytothefruitsofgenomesequencingproj-
ects.Themolecularfootprintslinkingalllifeontheplanetare
nowfleshedoutinrichdetail,andwepossessachronometerof
