Integrated Waveguide Amplifiers for Board Level Optical Interconnects

Job Description:
Conventional electronic components rely on copper lines that are integrated on a printed circuit
board. Such electrical interconnects are approaching their fundamental limitations in terms of data
rate and power dissipation. It is expected that the current electronic boards will soon be replaced by
so-called "optical backplanes". High optical losses in optical interconnects due to materials, signal
routing, and input/output coupling give rise to limited performance.
This project targets development of flip-chip mountable optical waveguide amplifiers based on
rare-earth-ion doped amorphous Al2O3
Requirements:
, compatible with standard silicon technology. The PhD student
will theoretically and experimentally investigate approaches for integration of waveguide amplifier
devices onto optical backplanes. Nano/micro-technology in our state-of-the-art clean-room facilities
and the optical characterization labs of the group will be used for the realization and testing of
integrated amplifier devices. The project will be based on the competences of our group (on-chip
integrated gain structures) and two world-leading industrial partners. The project will be funded by
the Dutch Technology Foundation (STW).
A Master or Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Optics is required before the starting
