Title: Assessing climate change vulnerabilities and adaptation strategies for agriculture
and water resources in New York
A core groups of CALS faculty has recently received a grant from the NY State Energy
Research Development Agency (NYSERDA) to assess statewide climate change
vulnerabilities and highlight critical impacts and adaptation strategies. Our efforts will
initially focus on agriculture and water resources, with colleagues from Columbia
examining human health and urban/coastal issues. There is also the potential to team
with National Grid to investigate energy supply issues. Success, both in terms of the
current project and future funding opportunities, will require input from a strong
interdisciplinary team that blends expertise in the physical and social sciences, land use
planning,GIS, etc. We hope to be able to assemble such a team at Cornell to 1) assist us
in this current project 2) provide a strong foundation for future efforts and 3) provide the
impetus for making Cornell an international leader in the assessment of climate change
vulnerabilities and the formulation of effective, scientifically sound adaptation plans.
