Summary: ABSTRACT:
The forest sector and forest-
dependent communities in many
parts of the world are in transition.
There is little doubt that the eco-
nomic situation facing the industry
today from slumping housing mar-
kets to globalization have contrib-
uted to and exacerbated this situation.
But this is just the tip of the iceberg.
This presentation will explore some
of the fundamental,underlying rea-
sons at the heart of the current eco-
nomic crisis. It begins with a consid-
eration of conservation principles and
delves into what can best be charac-
terized as a sector-wide myopia with
respect to our reliance on commodity
products,both in Canada and in other
