Most low­level algorithms are based on local dependencies. Medium and high­level
algorithms, however, need global interconnections. The paper describes algorithms
for image processing and pattern recognition which are well suited for implemen­
tation on parallel machines and whose topology may be described by global in­
terconnection networks. Several aspects of interconnection networks are discussed:
Reconfiguration, equivalence of different networks, granularity and principles of de­
composition (base­B factorization, vector interconnections), mapping principles on
smaller physical systems. Finally a parallel image processing system will be dis­
cussed which was developed at the Technical University of Hamburg. It is based
on Transputers and contains two different communication structures. A high­speed
parallel pipeline­bus is able to distribute the data coming from a sequentially ori­
ented camera with flexible arbitration to the slave processors, which above that are
interconnected by a reconfigurable interconnection network for the implementation
of parallel algorithms.
