Leave of Absence Student Checklist
Requesting a Leave of Absence
Students on a leave of absence suspend their active study for an entire term or more and do not make progress
toward their degree during that time. Students request a leave of absence, which is granted by Rackham when
the request is in accordance with the Leave of Absence Policy. The student is not registered during the term of a
leave of absence yet remains in compliance with the Continuous Enrollment Policy.
As a Ph.D. student, there may be alternatives to a leave of absence. You should consider these options
and discuss them with the faculty and staff in your graduate program.
The leave of absence process is designed to protect your privacy. Forms requesting sensitive information
are submitted directly to Rackham. Information shared with your graduate program is for academic
planning purposes only. If you request a leave of absence, you are not required to disclose any personal
details related to your request to your graduate program community (faculty, staff, and students). It is
your decision whether to disclose any details about the reason you need a leave to your graduate
program community.
