Dr Edward Guy combines his passion for science with a commitment to public
health. He heads the National Toxoplasma Reference Unit in Swansea, advising
clinicians in England and Wales about the disease and is also Head of Research
and Development at Public Health Wales.
Both jobs involve communicating scientific information to the wider world. "It's
exciting when you produce your first academic paper, you think you've really
achieved something but I find it far more satisfying to concentrate on the
outcomes of science, setting up effective processes that will directly help
people," he says.
Back in the late 1970s, the London teenager chose Southampton for his
undergraduate degree in Biochemistry with Physiology because of its good
reputation for science. The University was also regarded as a progressive place
to study because of its new modular degree structure. "I was there shortly after
Boldrewood opened and thought it was a great building. I liked Highfield too,
