1 INRODUCTION
Covers with capillary barrier effects (or CCBE)
have been recently proposed as an alternative to
covers with a low hydraulic conductivity layer to
limit the exchanges between wastes and the site sur-
roundings. This technology is based on the capillary
barrier principle; a phenomenon that appears under
partly saturated conditions when a fine-grained ma-
terial overlies a coarser one (e.g. Rasmuson and
Erikson, 1986, Morel-Seytoux, 1992). It is related to
