Summary: December 2001 heralds the launch of Science Matters, a
newsletter that aims to enhance communications between the
Materials Research Laboratory at University of California,
Santa Barbara and the external communities with which we
interact. Our goal is to capture, in both words and pictures,
some of the exciting scientific and
educational events that are taking
place in the MRL.
The Laboratory's support from
the National Science Foundation en-
ables us to sustain a diverse range of
activities. For example, in addition to
our world-class research effort, we
offer an extensive menu of educational
activities that bring us into closer con-
tact with our local community at both
the K-12 and Community College
level. We are particularly proud of our
summer session for City College Interns in Materials Research
(CCIMR), which has just completed its ninth year. Close to
